Nadal to wear $425,000 watch at FO

Rafael Nadal will have no excuse now if opponents give him a hard time about taking too long between points. The four-time French Open champion will play matches wearing a Richard Mille watch designed specifically for Nadal, with materials used in space exploration. Mille says Thursday there are 50 for sale—at a price of about $425,000.

Nadal never before has worn a watch while competing.
He flew from Spain to France on Thursday, and was planning to practice at Roland Garros. The tournament begins Sunday.
His uncle and coach, Toni, says Nadal couldn’t flex his knees last year, when his 31-match winning streak at the French Open ended. This year, Toni says, his nephew’s knees are “perfect.”

It will certainly help him explore his personal Black Hole, which he is always trying to do.

I'm sure it's just a tennis bracelet to Mr. Nadal. Time is irrelevant to him when competing on the court.

Please can we keep this thread a bit dignified without below-the-belt jokes.

Yup, Gorecki, sureshs forgot to login under another username when he commented on his own "joke". ;-)

The purpose of this thread was to point out to Federer fans that Federer is not the only classy person on the tour. Now there's not much that separates the 2.

The person that wrote that article is obviously a *******, making a sly allusion to Rafa's "moonballing" tactics.

$425 is ridiculous for a watch... but $425,000? Come on, Nadal, donate the money you don't need to charity or something. What if a ball hits it and it breaks?

Is he going to wear it on his left or right hand???? Will he start hitting balls short because of this??????

Meanwhile, children are starving in Africa, the world is experiencing recession and people across Europe continue to lose jobs while families struggle to make ends meet.

The question being, why would a tennis player flaunt something that 95% of the world couldn't afford to buy during troubled times? Its not because of humility.

Its just not PC right now to be flaunting wealth. In fact, Mother Marjorie finds it repulsive and disrespectful.

It's a publicity contract. He didn't buy the watch to show off his wealth. He gets paid to wear it just like Federer gets paid to wear the Rolex and just like many others get paid to promote different products.
But if he would have bought the watch, it would have been OK. He can do whatever he wants with his money.

Mother Marjorie,

There is an amazing amount of double standards on this forum. If Roger does something, he is flayed for it and called arrogant, a jerk, etc. If Saint Rafael does it, it is ignored or he has a right to or it shows how humble he is.

You know how if Saint Rafa ever loses, he was tired, fatigued, or injured. And Roger *never* had mono -- that was a dastardly lie. Only Roger makes excuses, Saint Rafa never does. Etcetera etcetera.

So you will learn to ignore all this after a while, and just have a chuckle. Basically a lot of folks here have not been hugged in a long time.

CMM, here's sending you a hug from a Fedal fan (if anyone can believe that).

Dude I'm pretty sure a watch costing nearly half a million is going to be virtually indestructible.

Nonsense. Rafa is the king of excuses, doper, has no talent, has ugly strokes, cakewalk draws, Spanish lap dogs and his humbleness is fake.

Mother Marjorie understands perfectly. Hugs are the gift that Mother's invented. Because where there is jealously and hatred, love cannot have a home.

Watson: Really? Holmes, have you read this?

Holmes: Er, I think they're being sarcastic Watson.

Watson: Ah, I see :) That said, a couple of interesting points they've raised, especia-

Holmes: Watson, please stop. No matter how true some of those points might be, there are plenty of flame wars for people to look up if interested, we need not add another.

Darn right. That's why socialism is so great. At least, until it runs out of other people's hard earned money.

I'm not saying your wrong about socialism, but right now we see very clear that capitalism can end just the same.

All those recent bailouts were financed by the public, not by this so called self-regulating market.

1. Excuses: everyone has a right to speak of an injury or illness, if asked. The same standard holds for Rafa and Roger. Rafa is not the king of excuses -- his fans here accept only his reasons, that's the double standard.

2. Doper - no proof.

3. No talent - no athlete at that level can have no talent

4. ugly strokes - subjective opinion

5. cakewalk draws - not his fault, he doesn't do them

6. lapdogs - not his fault, Federer has a huge fan club too

7. humility fake -- we don't know what's inside people's minds -- anyone who thinks they do is delusional.

Anymore you want to throw at me ?

Take it easy, CMM. Enjoy the RG, your man should win! Peace.

Since I don't want to turn this into Rants and Raves, let me simply say the drawing concrete equivilencies between so-called bailouts (which I did not generally support and in many cases are less than bailouts since the government (with the exception of GM and AIG) has so far made a profit on the monies it loaned to financial institutions) and socialism is intellectually unsound. This is not the forum to debate that so this will be my last word on this subject.

In any event, that particular criticism of Nadal for wearing the watch seems to be a rather unfair criticism--he should be free to make whatever he can and sign whatever deals he can while his value is high--he worked very hard to be where he is today.

Very interesting, and a debate that has raged forever and will continue.

Why I find this interesting is because of the watch. A couple of months ago, I read in the NYT (or may have been the WSJ) that Swiss watchmakers (the guys who meticulously craft the mechanical movements by hand and who have been steadily losing their jobs due to digital technology) were closely monitoring the good times returning to Wall Street. Seems their main customers are the financial types who make a killing. They earn a big chunk of money, and splurge on a $500,000 watch. So, they are keeping the guys employed and an old tradition survives.

Example of trickle-down economics. But when it degenerates to ****-down economics, it is time to oppose it.
