who would win this encounter - played on RG clay? Fed is more experienced than back in 2005/6 days, he only really started becoming good in 2005.

Rafa in 2005 is considerably younger, and more defensive. however he was almost unbeatable that year.

court surface: Chatrier court. assume medium conditions.

winner is nadal. he was still very hard to beat that year.

I think it was harder to beat 2005 Fed than 2010 fed.

In general, that's true. But I think with the knowledge Fed has now, the dropshot in his arsenal, the experience and how he can peak in a Slam and now he knows the significance of a win there in 2005. He'd get the tactics right and he has the confidence he can win the French now, so I'd pick Federer.

Nadal's serve is just too weak.

serve rarely wins points on medium clay. rafa would easily win it. his lefty forehand was still lethal in 2005, check the vids. he was also very quick then too.

2005-2007 Nadal had better defense and better movement. He would force Federer into endless rallies and either force him into lots of UEs or outlast him. Either way Fed loses.

Nadal is winning his matches against Federer on clay on his serve, not Federer. Nadal's serve in 2005 was easy to run around and hit an outright winner of. He rarely hits a sitter like that from the baseline.

I agree serve rarely wins you matches on clay, but it does lose you matches if it's weak.
