Anybody try Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA?

Can somebody enlighten me? I like Miller Draught, and sometimes Miller Chill, over Budweiser, is this a bad thing? Tell me more. I know nothing about American Beers. (They are so p*ss weak) hehehe.....

American macro-brews tend to be weak and filled with cost-savers such as rice or corn instead of the usual grains, yeast, hops, water combo.

Being that you're down-under, you might have a hard time finding truly great American beer, but there are lots of decent almost macro-brew companies that may ship down there, like Sierra Nevada and similar.

Especially Sam Adams Utopias and Hair of the Dog Dave...those are especially p*ss weak.

sorry :(, i should rephrase, not all american brewers are especially p*ss weak. The aformentioned brands are (Bud, Miller, Coors that is). Its just a shame LTP cannot obtain many of the brands and brews that we mention in the thread due to your location.

That better????

My post was kind of intended as tongue in cheek to LTP. ;)

jhick,

How is that Sam Adams Utopias? I haven't had anything above 12% ABV, and I know that this is somewhere around 25% ABV? And where can one obtain this stuff as I have never seen it (and probably won't as NC laws cap the ABV at 15%)?

It's really more like a port or cognac. Not really all that carbonated. Very strong notes of vanilla, molasses, and quite sweet. I was lucky enough to get a sample of it at a beer tasting event. I've seen it sold in stores for around $150 for the copper kettle.

A bottle of Hair of the Dog Dave went for over $1,500 at an online auction this year. The money went to charity to fight Parkinson's Disease I believe.

I don't drink much anymore, but I recently had two Digfish 90s after tennis, alongside a buffalo burger and a big, spicy salad. The best.

On our way out of the restaurant, we noticed a smooth middle-aged man with a posse including some fine women. He was drinking Dogfish 90s as well!

I overheard.....
the guy was speaking French in Russian,
evidently sharks have a week named after him,
and his mom has a tattoo that says, "SON".

Turns out, he doesn't normally drink beer, but when he does, he prefers something strong and hoppy, like this Dogfish IPA.

Tried a new beer over New Year's that was truly impressive - the Founders Backwoods B-astard. It's their Dirty B-astard aged in oak barrels - one of the best oak aged beers I've tried (alongside the Tyranena Rocky's Revenge).

It's almost like drinking a mild bourbon - heavy vanilla flavor, very smooth mouthfeel, and a pretty hefty alcohol flavor for a beer (it comes in at a hair over 10% ABV). Highly recommended.

a while back had a very limited brew that was aged in bourbon oak barrels. had a bourbon flavor but not overpowering. reads like this was a similar concoction.

here's the bourbon barrel aged beer:

Yep. Backwoods ******* is indeed a very fine beer. Very well balanced for an oak aged beer. In fact, Founders for the most part, is a really solid brewery, and I'm glad we now can get them here in Minny.

Currently sipping on a Bells Third Coast Old Ale, one of my favorite Bells along with some of their older batch series (namely 5000-7000) and Hopslam.

Going to try and limit IPA consumption more this year. We'll see how long that New Year's resolution lasts. :)

Why, for heaven's sake!!! :) Why limit something that gives you so much joy? Look, I had to sit through 'Julie and Julia' with the wife this weekend. Julia Child lived to be 90 and her husband 92. They ate rich French food and drank red wine every day. They also smoked. The two were apparently very much in love, as well. I wanna go out like that...quality vs. quantity or maybe quality+quantity, if I'm lucky. Seems like we're all in that gray area in terms of drinks per day. I can have 2/day for sure and if I stretch it to 3-4 some days, I figure all is well. As for calories, I'd rather have my 2 IPA's than dessert anyday. :)

Oh, it's two IPAs OR dessert? No wonder I've gotten like this.

Well, at least two...three if you were really good that day. :) That's my logic...I'm ~6'3", 225#, so I figure amounts need to be adjusted upward, just like you adjust meds, etc., downward for kids/smaller people. :) I figure if the average guy can have 2 drinks, a slightly larger guy can have at least 3 with the same outcome.

I thought I liked beer. This thread is deep beer geek hobby mountain! (And that's in no way a bad thing ;)) Had my first Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA last night at dinner. I probably wouldn't have thought to order it had it not been for this thread, so, viva Talk Tennis (!) once again. I thought it was a very good beer. Right on the edge of having "too much good stuff". It's about as intense a brew that I can take multiple servings of. Any more intense than that and I'm one and done.

BTW, my favorite beer at the moment is New Glarus Spotted Cow. Can anyone suggest a similar that has greater availability? I'm also a fan of the Bell's selections (for provincial/sentimental reasons as much as taste).

My New Year's Resolutions last about 2 to 3 days most years. :) Had ice cream last night versus a few IPAs. Got to have something in the evenings but man I sleep much better with those IPAs versus the sugar rush.

Bells is very good. I have some Bells Two Hearted Ale in my fridge now whispering to me...

I'm guessing if you're in Wisconsin since New Glarus doesn't distribute outside the state. Wisconsin has a very nice craft beer selection. If you liked 90 minute, I would give Weyerbacher Double Simcoe a try sometime. Also Stone makes some nice hoppy beers and are available in Wisconsin.

New Glarus is a solid brewery in it's own right and absolutely nails the fruit and wheat beer categories. Give some of their other beers (besides Spotted Cow) a try if you live in Wisc.

No, not a Cheesehead here. An FIB. My bro-in-law hooked me up with 12 last week when he came back from a job in the north woods. The other times I had it were when I went skiing and I was somewhat distraught upon my return home to learn that it was not available outside of WI. That's why I'm looking for something similar, with a wider distribution. Next time I slip behind the Cheddar Curtain, I'm loading up the trunk.

Had to look up what fib stood for. So I'm guessing Illinois then? Ever try Three Floyds?

Spotted Cow is a Cream Ale. Not too many cream ales on the market with a wide distribution, but some local brewpubs may potentially make them. I would start there.

2010 Stone Vertical Epic Ale from large bottle - very floral

Dogfish Head Palo Santo Maron - 12% alcohol - this was a bruiser.

And of course, some more Victory Hopdevil.

It's good (much better than Hop Wallop IMO), but under some of the top tier IPA's. Of course I believe I get kind of spoiled with having easy access to Surly Furious and Town Hall Masala Mama.

That said, I still prefer Two Hearted over Hop Devil

Me too. I really like Hop Devil but it depends on your desire/taste for extrem hoppiness. It's not quite on the level of Bell's or many of the west coast style IPAs.

2010 Stone Vertical Epic Ale ....

I've never tried it, but I love the name.
The word EPIC is so amazingly and epically overused nowadays (so is AMAZING) that the meaning is diminished.

I'm for more EPIC saturation so that one day people will just not even hear that word, and eventually just stop using the word. That will be amazing.

Then, some years later, both EPIC and AMAZING will come to actually mean something. And that, my friends, will be so epic!

EDIT:
Okay, back to the brews.

I love the hoppy, strong ones.
I'm thinking of coming up with a beer called Hop-o-pot-amus. And a variant brew aimed at the lucrative urban rap demographic: Hip-Hop-o-pot-amus.
I'd get Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement to endorse it, give them free product and a point or two of international distribution.

I've seen the Santa B version in BevMo but never tried it. Seems to be a popular name, eh? I do like your marketing plans involving the Conchords, though. :)

Tonight on my way to the liquor store, I found an incredible deal. Great Divide bombers on clearance for $1.99. This included the Wood Aged IIPA, Tripel, Smoked Baltic Porter, Dunkel Weiss, and Double Wit. I stocked up on the first 3, and didn't get the last 2 styles since they don't interest me that much. I think these are normally priced at around $8 or so.

On top of it, the place gave me an extra 10% off my bill. :)

When I first saw the $1.99, I pretty much did a double take.

They posted on Facebook to the effect that there's at least one more episode complete, but that Discovery hasn't told them when it will air.

OK, thanks. I had a treat in the fridge when I got home from my tennis match last night. A 4 pack of DF 90 is such a welcome sight.

Geez, that's practically worth a drive! In other news, it seems that Chicone's and Casanova in Hudson are selling Goose Island Night Stalker bombers at $5.99.

Picked up a 6 pack of the Hop Devil last night. I finally know the flavor I don't like in some IPAs. It's the Hops! Is there a Beer Trade thread anywhere? Actually, it's a nice change up to the sweeter IPAs I like but I don't think I'll buy it again.

That's that hoppy citrus harshness that we discussed a while back in this thread. I remember someone associated it with some west coast IPAs. Hop Devil has it as I recall, as does Weyerbacher Double Simcoe IPA, and many others. I like my share of hoppy beers and strong beers, but the ones that have that overly powerful citrus-like hop flavor are not high on my list. I wouldn't buy the HopDevil or Weyerbacher Simcoe again - I just think the sharpness isn't balanced enough. DFH90 has a very noticeably sweet flavor when you put it side-by-side to one of these sharp citrusy hop/IPA beers.

Yep, completely agree. I'm on the opposite side of the fence, as I love the west coast-style, bitter, hoppy, citrus flavors and do not like the sweeter IPAs as much. Good thing we have so many good beers to choose from these days. :)

I'm in your camp on the opposite side of KevinT. I have to admit I enjoyed my Hop Devil a little more last night. It is growing on me a little bit which is good since I still have 4 left to polish off.
