I wonder how well Minnesota can do in the NCAAs. Would love to see them make the Round of 16. Guess it depends on the draw and who they matchup with in the 2nd Rnd.

One thing I hate about the ITA is the way they do tournaments. Because of Minnesota's location they will probably end up in Ohio State's region when they deserve to go to a lower ranked schools place.

I couldn't agree more, also it would be nice for teams who make it to get a chance to play somewhere different.

I thought it was random draw based on your seeding group (ie 8-16 seeds)?

With their depth, they should be hard to beat in the first round. With Wernet playing so well at 1 right now, they definitely have a chance for the Sweet 16 if they get a decent draw.

Today will be interesting against OSU. The Golden Gophers are grinders and compete hard but OSU is better at every spot. No pressure however, they've already had a great tournament. Not just getting to the final but the way they did it is impressive.

No, it's not a random draw. The 16 seeded teams host regionals, unless they don't have a facility that can accomodate it (most do). The next 16 teams, in the 17-32 group are assigned to regionals, and travel distance does play into the decision. So on for the 33-48 group and the 49-64 group.

Just because Columbus is the closest regional to Minnesota doesn't necessarily mean the Gophers will end up there, especially since Illinois and Indiana are both considered locks to get in right now.

It's just the the chances of being sent to Florida or L.A. are lower than being sent to Columbus, Lexington, or Knoxville.

No Live Stats?

I am getting an error trying to access Live State from the tournament site. Anybody getting live stats for Minnesota - OSU?

Michigan v. Northwestern in the Big 10 women's final.

Michigan beat NU in a closer-than-it-looks 6-1 match a couple of weeks ago. Michigan is, overall, the better team this year.

Doubles point to Michigan - NU actually served for it in the deciding doubles match, but couldn't hold on.

Match is now 3-2 Michigan, with both No. 1 and No. 2 singles for NU turning around matches after losing the first set. NU could still actually win 4-3, though I'm not counting on it.

What I cannot believe is that Wowchuk for NU lost 6-0, 6-0. I'm not surprised she lost, the Michigan player is good. But, the score just doesn't make sense. Yes, even good players get beat badly sometimes, but 6-2, 6-2 or something like that. I'm wondering if she was injured or something.

Minnesota is playing really well at 4, 5, and 6. If they actually played the whole match out, Minnesota could very well lose 4-3 or 5-2, a very respectable score vs. OSU.

But, it looks like it's almost over and it will probably be be abandoned at 4-0.

Womens is outdoors accoridng to the match schedule. I'm just "watching" live scores. NU women are up in the third set, 3-0 at No. 1, and 1-0 at No. 2. But, they're playing at Michigan and the Wolverines No. 1 and 2 are great players, so there's a long way to go. I have my fingers crossed though.

Momentums with NU right now though.

The women's match was going to run web cams, but they did not want Fedace leering at them so they decided to go with LiveStats only.

Darn, looks like NU will win at No. 1, up 4-0. But, Michigan is now up 2-1 (with a break) at No. 2. Home court advantage could be huge with all the cheering fans, because it will most likely come down to No. 2. Of course, that can also be very stressful.

As always, that doubles point was huge. At least NU didn't actually have a match point for the doubles and lose it. Though they did serve for it and got broken.

I cannot believe NU won 4-3 over Michigan after serving for the doubles point and losing it, losing a singles match 0-6, 0-6, and losing the first set of No. 1 singles 2-6, and losing the first set of No. 2 singles 1-6.

Lineups were exactly the same as when Michigan beat NU 6-1 a little over a week ago. Wowchuk had lost to Taney 2-6, 3-6 in that match, so, again, surprised at the 0-6, 0-6 score today. Maybe ill or a minor injury, or one of those matches where one person is slightly off and the other one is on fire?

Quite a comeback. Feel sorry for Michigan though. That deciding match was played by a freshman for Michigan. Had to be stressful playing the deciding match for the Big 10 tournament title at home when you're expected to win and after having been ahead in the match.

Big 10 title for women is awarded to the regular season champs. NU had won something like 10 or 11 in a row before Michigan won this year and last year. Though both years, NU won the tournament with a "revenge" victory over the Wolverines.

Gophs battled but just can't match the talent level of OSU. It would have been interesting if one of the top 3 could have hung in there for a while to let the the matches at the bottom play out. It looked like The Golden Gophers were going to win a couple.

Great tournament for Minnesota, now on to the NCAAs. Hope they get a good draw.

Big Ten Tennis for 2011-12

It looks like OSU will roll through the Big Ten season again. The real question is who will finish 2nd through 5th. Seems that Illinois is vulnerable with recent defections.

Minnesota and Michigan look to be the prime candidates to move up. The Golden Gophers have great returning depth, some good recruits and the best coach in the Big Ten. Michigan has Evan King and a group of young and talented returnees. Their season will ride on their improvement. After that, Indiana has the best chance to make a move. Overall, the conference will be down a little but it will always be fun to follow.

Don't forget Nebraska. Now they are in the Big 10 but probably won't win it, but they made NCAA tourney last few years and have beaten good teams like Wisconsin last year.

In the Big Ten, Ohio State would have to really fall apart. Most of their players could catch the flu or get injured and WWIII would have to break out before they lose the title. The battle is for number two. Illinois has definitely fallen back to the middle of the pack, so Michigan, Minnesota and (gag) even Indiana has a chance. There should still be 5 or 6 teams in the NCAA tournament, with 2 or 3 of them making it to the Sweet Sixteen.

why is Minnesota so hated so much ? Are they all jerks ? or too arrogant ?

I heard alot of bad things about Minnesota players. arrogant, acting like jerks...

That was true in recent years past. Seems like the guys now though, and coach, are turning the program around and I have no problem with them.

Yes Minnesota had some major jerks a few years back, I think they changed.
Minnesota had one major jerk, who was the then coaches son. However, the program has been turning around, and they are recruiting good talent. This is a good team, and a credit to the coach.

Um, why would anyone think Fedace would know anything about the Minnesota program? I've followed the program for many years and am only aware of one guy a number of years ago that was a jerk. They've got a good group of guys and a great coach.

They will be interesting to watch as they return great depth and have a couple of new recruits that could play up in the lineup. They should battle it out for a top spot in the Big Ten.

I think everyone takes this Fedace chap for entertainment value. He's never boring.

Minnesota beat Illinois last season for the first time since the late 90s so they do have a rising team. Michigan is looking good too. Indiana (gag), the pit scum pond of the earth, probably played way over their heads last year. If Illinois doesn't get some players by January, then it's tO$U, with Michigan and Minnesota battling it out for second and Illinois taking fourth. Sigh, I miss the good 'ol days.

Isade Juneau at Indiana just won a point on the futures tour, thats the first time anyone from Indiana has in 10 years I would guess. He played around 4 singles last season I think. Maybe they will be better than I expected

Northwestern men baffle me. They have a great facility, their women have been good, they are a first class academic institution so it seems everything should be geared to attract top recruit. Yet so many others in the big ten have improved recently. Why not them?

It's probably because the wrong guy is driving the bus. All of their sports have improved BUT, men's tennis. They must have a great AD, but this program needs some attention.

There's a pretty large difference between Stanford sucking(top 15) and Northwestern sucking(outside top 60)

There's a pretty large difference between Stanford's onetime tennis dominance and Northwestern's modest success. Stanford has won multiple, multiple NCAA championships, was a dominant Top 3 team year in and year out during the 70's, 80's and 90's and for the most part has not come close to sniffing the top let alone the title since the Bryan's left. Northwestern tennis, other than Todd Martin playing there for 2 years, has never been in the hunt for the title much less anything of note other than a mid-range ranking.

AGREE, bring Todd Martin as the HEAD coach and they could become top 5 in the nation. No doubt

Also they have pretty strict admission requirements. I think guys that get admitted to Ohio State could never get into Northwestern due to poor grades. :)

Wow, one of the few things you've said I completely agree with.

Hard to argue that has something to do with their lack of success when programs like Duke, Vandy, Notre Dame and yes even Stanford have similar rigorous admissions policies. They all have successful tennis programs in the top 25 or so. All you degree snobs, don't get picky here, I said similar, not the same.

Don't go there. OSU has academics as good as anyone. All big land grant state schools have tremendous programs. Top programs are not the exclusive of the "name" schools. Never have been. Medicine, OSU has one of the best. Law, Michigan and Minnesota. Athletics, all, even the Ivy's cut corners. Hockey players at Dartmouth and Cornell? Anyone want to touch that? They get Canadians that are 21 yr. old freshman! Top hockey players in the Ivy League don't come from Hotchkiss, or Deerfield.
