Big 10 Tennis

Don't go there. OSU has academics as good as anyone. All big land grant state schools have tremendous programs. Top programs are not the exclusive of the "name" schools. Never have been. Medicine, OSU has one of the best. Law, Michigan and Minnesota. Athletics, all, even the Ivy's cut corners. Hockey players at Dartmouth and Cornell? Anyone want to touch that? They get Canadians that are 21 yr. old freshman! Top hockey players in the Ivy League don't come from Hotchkiss, or Deerfield.

Sorry, but tOSU is in the middle of the pack in the Big Ten.

Wisconsin
Michigan
Illinois
Northwestern
Minnesota
Penn State
Purdue

are all ranked higher.

It seems that most of the top players are sitting this one out. It was somewhat the same last year.

Are there other tournaments somewhere where the top Big Ten guys are playing? Kind of takes the shine off the tournament when its lots of guys that will play 3 thru 6.

Minnesota had one major jerk, who was the then coaches son. However, the program has been turning around, and they are recruiting good talent. This is a good team, and a credit to the coach.

Turning around?? Are you pulling that out of your rear end? Dave Geatz got the team to #10 in the country and had the #1 player in the nation in Harsh Mankad. Granted the Coach Young era has been a productive one, but his teams are nowhere near the talent level of Geatz's teams and have not even approached equaling their results. As for some of the guys being arrogant and such-- there are always one or two bad apples on EVERY team. I don't know many teams in the top 50 that don't have at least one a-hole on their roster.

I think he meant turning around as in not making it all about winning at any cost (bad sportsmanship, players getting paid without doing the work they were supposed to do, etc). Turning around as in having a class act team that is still dedicated to being the best it can.

Wasnt long ago and that team was full of punks. They had a reputation that way as well from every opposing coach/player ive met from that era that played them. Geatz's teams had success, but then they ran into these problems. His son... we wont even go there. Coach Young and the recent teams seem like a good outfit and going in the right direction. But Geatz's teams won alot of Big 10 championships no doubt.

Plus, the last couple years of Geatz's tenure were not nearly as successful on the court either.

The Gophers have gotten better every year since Young took over and were as high as #16 last year. Every year the lineup gets a little better at every spot and that appears to be the case again this year. They really are just a top #1 singles player away from the Sweet 16. That makes Boyer's choice hard for Gopher fans! However, they have another couple good, solid freshman who will be in the linup this year.

Big Ten Indoors Results

Surprise has to be MSU - Pfister winning it and Lied in the semi's. That has to have Spartan fans hopeful of a better year. Don't know about the rest of their lineup but these are results not expected based on the last couple years.

Why, where is Boyer going?

The Golden Gophers dominated Bucky 6-1 in the Big Ten opener, while sitting two regulars. Always good for the Gold to take it to Bucky. After a slow start, The Golden Gophers are starting to find their form. They have kind of an unusual team in that they have started 10 different players so far in dual matches. It will be interesting to see that sort out.

Maybe need a thread of Big 10 tennis?? I kind of follow that conference.

IU is strong at the bottom of the line up, 1-3 much less so, the doubles point is proving huge.

Indiana overtakes Illinois to move to #18 which even as a fan seems tough to fathom right now.

Congrats to IU

Solid wins over Notre Dame and now they get the rewards with the lofty ranking. You are wise to be a little skeptical as the rankings move around unexpectently. Minnesota went on a 4 match winning streak and dropped from 30 something to 60. Who knows. Glad to see programs other than OSU and Illinois doing something in the Big Ten.

What is interesting to me is that Indianas #1 Isade Juneau had a very solid fall including an ATP point and they picked up a transfer from Tulsa (Barnes) who also won an ATP point in the fall. These two are maybe the 2 least solid in the lineup now, if they get it together IU could truly be a top 20 team (assuming others dont slide).

Big weekend coming up for IU, Penn State Friday then an ohio State Sunday and we will see how they have developed. We lost 4-0 to an osu earlier this year but were leading on the other courts.

Talking to myself here but anyway, an osu handled Indiana pretty easily today in a 6-1 win with a surprise win at 4 singles for Indiana. Main surprise to me was how much time tucker spent at #1 coaching Buchanan constantly. if his diaper had fallen off I think Tucker would have had to re- tie it for him.

Tucker is a micro-manager. At the National Team Indoors, he would stand there at courtside and tell the returner where to stand for the server he was facing, etc. Like moving pawns around on a chessboard.

Minnesota Sweeps the Michigans

The Golden Gophers shutout Michigan State Friday and beat Michigan 4-3 today. Big win today for the overall conference standings as Minnesota, Michigan and Indiana are all in contention for the third spot in the conference. Gophers are now 3-0 in Big Ten play. Jaggy, Minnesota vs. Indiana will be another important match as in the last few years.

Better yet, The Golden Gophers drilled North Dakota in hockey and are on their way to their 20th final four.

Trent is a good coach. He does what is necessary.

Indiana got land-blasted by Southern Cal last year in a very lopsided match. They got killed by Ohio State yesterday in a pretty big rout. What's with that Jaggy? Are the players not ready for the talent upgrade? Are Indiana's players solid but all can be bullied by bigger shotmakers? What do you make of it?

With the exception of court 5 which osu won very easily I felt the other 4 osu singles wins yesterday were just a case of them playing the big points better, much better!
A lot of long rallies and long games but the better talent won where they should have.
IU is very well conditioned and winning against similar talent but osu is so much deeper.

A micro-manager sports coach huh, whats the odds!

It is unusual in tennis. All you have to do is watch the coaches from various teams and compare. Believe me, most tennis coaches do not stand beside the court and tell the doubles player to stand out wider for his return of serve or anything at that level of detail.

Indiana with a disappointing 4-3 loss today to Louisville. Hoosiers were up 3-2 and Louisville pulled out #2 and #6 singles in the 3rd set to win it. IU probably won't sniff the top 20 again after this week.

Only coaches I have seen do it are the Maryland coach and the Louisville coach

So IU lost at Mich State today which I cannot even begin to imagine how that happened. Somethings wrong for sure.

Gophers vs Indiana

Critical match for the Gophers at 4-3 in the Big Ten. They have played all the top teams and need to run the table. Today's match will be very tough.

Jaggy - will it be outside and is there live scoring / video?

Just logged in, Minnesota won 4-3 indoors and deserved to. Stormy outside before and during so it was always going to be indoors. Indiana plays too much not to lose and that cost them in doubles

Just read the match story, Indiana had match point in the deciding doubles match but couldn't close it out. The final singles match was two tie breakers so it doesn't get any closer.

Wild match in that the Gophers lost at the bottom of the line up which they rarely do and their best player Toledo lost at number 2 where he has been money all season.

Two very similar teams. Likely to meet up again in the Big Ten tournament. Gophers can now grab 3rd place in the Big Ten.

Indiana plays Illinois tomorrow in what is becoming a fall apart season for the Hoosiers. To say it is a must win is a huge overstatement and they are underdogs but a win would go some way to getting us back on track.

I think Michigan is the only team that can somewhat push Ohio State. They play on Sunday in Columbus so I guess that'll give us our answer.
