Gosen OG Sheep Micro 17 - tension issue?

Based on all the positive reviews of this string I decided to go out to the local tennis store to buy a couple of sets.

After buying it and looking at the packaging, I saw on the back that the recommended tension was 45 - 55 lbs. The problem is that I get my rackets strung at 65 lbs.

Is this going to be an issue for me? Has anybody else strung it at my similiar tension and had no problems?

Thanks

My favorite tension with this string was 0 pounds when it broke and I didn't have to use it anymore. :)

Aaaaaamen. I don't get what all the fuss is about. Pro supex Titan synthetic gut is about the same price and much better.

mikeler,

I'm glad you replied. Just today I was going through your multi thread. Only on page 30, but plan on getting through it all.

I wanted to ask you for your thoughts.

I just got the gosen strung today 17g, and all I had been using since picking tennis back up is the PSGD 17g. (when I played HS tennis 15+ years ago I also only strung with Prince synthetic although I don't think duraflex existed back then)

From where I have read up to on your thread you were really loving the Mantis Comfort, RIP, and Dunlop Hex.

How do the two synthetics I mentioned compare? I don't have any arm issues like you and I don't have any reference as to what soft means since I know PSGD is a pretty stiff string. I don't hit with a ton of topspin, outside of what is generated by my normal stroke.

Overall I think the PSGD is ok, but again I don't have any other reference. My main issue with it is that I can't seem to generate much spin and that everyone once in a while, a seemingly well hit ball will just go out by alot. (I'm guessing this is what people call the trampoline effect.)

Also I noticed that your top multis are called low powered by you. When I look at the TW learning center string comparison, it seems like the PSGD is even lower powered. So I'm wondering, does that mean the the multis you like are actually higher powered when compared to PSGD? (I string an OS at 65 by the way) Or is this a case where the test numbers don't really tell the true story?

I'm wondering if any of the multis you like can a)help me generate more spin if I need to and b) eliminate the trampoline effect.

Thanks

Gosen SM 17 has no problem going to 65 lbs. Don't over analyze. Try it out and see how it works for you.

It should string up fine @ 65. How long before it breaks has more to with your game and the frame (string pattern) you are using. If you string it at 65 in say a Dunlop 500 Tour series... I would not expect to get that many hours out it with my game. String it in PK 5G.. and more hours to be sure.

Try a setup with poly in the mains and synthetic gut in the crosses. That will help fix both issues a) and b). Just string the poly at least 10% lower or even better at 50 or below so that you have less potential to run into arm pain.

How about from a power standpoint? I'm not exactly a big hitter, but more of a run you side to side and put away the short ball type of player. Like I stated earlier, I don't really have experience with different setups, but ideally I would like to get some extra oopmh from my strings without it trampolining since my control is already pretty good.

Will the hybrid setup with poly/synthetic accomplish this?

I finally got through the entire thread and see your favorite from there was the B5E/Mantis setup. Looking at how I described my game and my needs, which strings would you recommend to hybrid?

Also, since you really don't like Gosen (haven't tried it yet) can you tell me in what areas it really falls short compared to your favorite multis and your poly/synth setups?

Thanks in advance.

Well now that you've finished the thread, you can see that I only play with soft setups. I'm currently experimenting with Xcel as a cross with B5E but that is just too expensive to use full time as a cross string and I can't tell a huge difference between it and MCS.

What is your price range? The more expensive multis don't tend to have that trampoline effect. There are low powered multis like RIP Control and Mantis Comfort but they might not have enough power for you. It might be worthwhile to try my setup just to see what it is like too.

The Gosen for me was stiff, had no feel, it was a chore to generate spin and it broke after 14 games. Nuff said. :)

I don't string my own rackets so I am definitely looking for bang for the buck. This is why I liked your multi thread so much because you started out with this intent in mind.

So I can get come sort of comparison, how would you rank the power level of these synthetics? PSGD , Gosen Micro Sheep , Mantis Comfort, T Multifeel, X-1, NRG2
(range on my OS is 55 - 70, so at 65, I string a little bit above the medium range)

And would going with the most powerful of these in the crosses help in the power department in the poly/synth setups?

Been awhile since I've hit with PSGD or Gosen so I'll leave those out of my power rankings but the most powerful to least I'd rank below:

X-1 (controlled power until it loses tension after a few hours)
NRG2
MultiFeel
Mantis Comfort

So what would the affect be matching b5e with a more powerful cross of x-1 as opposed to mantis? I have read that the mains contribute most to the characteristics of the setup, but will using something more powerful in the crosses help with power?

I would have to lower the tension some to compensate for extra power. In general, I like low powered strings so I'm happy with my current setup.

I use to string all my frames with 100% SM 17 setups. It was a great setup for a flat ball hitter like me and provided good comfort and longevity. Recently I switched to Genesis Heptonic 18 mains with SM 17 crosses, strung at the same 55 mains, 52 crosses as my all SM setup. Suddenly I have access to a lot more spin, in many case crazy spin, both top and under. The Heptonic 18 is only 1 point stiffer than the SM 17, so I'm guessing the mains do really have a big impact on the characteristics of the string bed since I am seeing all the benefits of poly in this setup with none of the downside (arm pain, stiff string beds).

So for your full SM 17 you did 55 mains 52 crosses? What is the reasoning for that?

When you put in Heptonic, what was the power like? Did you experience a dropoff?

Thanks
