Davis Cup predictions - 1st Round

Here's mine.

Spain vs Kazakhstan - Spain wins 5-0
______________________________
Way way WAY too powerful of a Spanish team, plus Golubev might very well be their best player, and he had his own problems last year.

Austria vs Russia - Russia wins 4-1
____________________________
I like Melzer, but he can't do it alone. Russia has way more depth with three top 60 players. Peya's 698 in the world, and more of a doubles player.

Canada vs France - France wins 5-0
_____________________________
France has too much, and Raonic can't overcome any of those players.

Switzerland vs USA - Switzerland wins 3-2
___________________________________
All Roger, all the time, and no Bryans teaming together = Bye bye.

Czech Republic vs Italy - Czech Republic wins 4-1
________________________________________
I like Seppi to win a match, but the Czechs are pretty loaded for bear.

Serbia vs Sweden - Serbia wins 3-2
_____________________________
Most even matchup of the 1st Round, in my opinion. Far as the teams, I'm not fond of either to win it all, but I think Tipsarevic is the decider. He's a top 10 guy now, and playing well.

Japan vs Croatia - Croatia wins 3-2
____________________________
This isn't the Japan of years past. Soeda, Ito, Nishikori, and Sugita have started off the year very very well in Qualies and the main draw(especially Nishikori), and they'll surprise some people. I think Croatia wins, but this won't be a blowout.

Germany vs Argentina - Argentina wins 4-1
___________________________________
I think the two Phillipps win doubles, but I like the Argentines as a whole, even Schwank.

Disagree most on Serbia/Sweden tie. That's a Serbian blowout...at home on indoor HC will be straights in singles and maybe even a doubles win thanks to Nenad.

Spain vs Kazakhstan - Spain wins 4-1
Obvious Spain will win even with out their tier 1 players: Fernando, Nadal, and Ferrer. They might lose the dbls.

Austria vs Russia - Austria wins 3-2
Melzer and the other Austrian guy are good in dbls. Melzer can pull his 2 singles plus dbls.

Canada vs France - France wins 3-2
Nestor and Poppipil are good for dbls....though the French with Clement and Llondra would be tough. Raonic has the ability to win one match. The French aren't great match players in terms of pressure.....we will see what happens.

Switzerland vs USA - Switzerland wins 4-1
LOL.....Americans on clay. One Bryan plus Isner/Queerey/Fish will win dbls. Wawrinka forte is on clay and Federer isn't French Open champion for nothing.

Czech Republic vs Italy - Czech Republic wins 5-0

As much as I like Fognini.....Tomas and Stephanek will pull through.

Serbia vs Sweden - Serbia wins 5-0
Troicki, Djokovic, and Tipsy are miles about any Swedish player except Soderling. Unfortunately Soderling is out :(. Maybe Troicki can usually choke and Tipsarevic may have a bad lapse but I doubt in front of Serbia they will lose. Dbls might be the only competitive match with Nenad and Lindstedt having a showdown.

Japan vs Croatia - Croatia wins 4-1

Nishkori pulls it out a grinder.

Germany vs Argentina - Argentina wins 5-0

Argentina motivated to reach final...so that this time they don't mess up on Indoor Hardcourts to spain.

Here's mine :)

Spain vs Kazakhstan - Spain wins 5-0
______________________________
Spain is too epic to lose here.

Austria vs Russia - Russia wins 4-1
____________________________
Russia is deep, but I think this tie will be closer than the score appears

Canada vs France - Canada wins 3-2
_____________________________
Raonic may get 1 singles tie, Nestor + someone could win doubs, and pospisil is a DC warrior. A guy can hope, right? ;)

Switzerland vs USA - Switzerland wins 4-1
___________________________________
Fed and Stan play all the matches, no chance for the US.

Czech Republic vs Italy - Czech Republic wins 4-1
________________________________________
Nothing to say here...

Serbia vs Sweden - Serbia wins 4-1
_____________________________
Serbia is Serbia, after all. They are too good.

Japan vs Croatia - Croatia wins 3-2
____________________________
Japan keeps it close, but the Croats are just too tall ;)

Germany vs Argentina - Argentina wins 4-1

I like Argentina, is Del Po playing?

Except, Queerey isn't playing. Neither is Querrey.

I agree with most, but not all.

Spain vs Kazakhstan - Spain wins 5-0. Yeah.

Austria vs Russia - Russia wins 3-2, but the tie isn't as close as the 3-2 score makes it seem. So maybe 4-1.

Canada vs France - France wins 4-1. Either Milos or Nestor get a point, but otherwise not so close.

Switzerland vs USA - Switzerland wins 4-1. Americans playing singles on clay doesn't work. Not close.

Czech Republic vs Italy - Czech Republic wins 4-1. Outmatched.

Serbia vs Sweden - Serbia wins 5-0. Sweden has one top 10 doubles player, and nobody else in the top 100 in singles or doubles.

Japan vs Croatia - Croatia wins 3-2. This one is really tough. I think experience will be the difference here, the Croatian squad is all veterans. But nishikori is playing well...

Germany vs Argentina - Argentina wins 3-2. This will be a lot closer than people think. Monaco is riding high, and he'll carry this one, but it'll be tough.

If I had to guess on upsets, I'd go with Japan or Germany for the upset; if pressed, I'd go with Japan for the upset.

why is germany receiving argentina on clay ?...
http://www.daviscup.com/en/results/tie/details.aspx?tieId=100017652
(is spain the last country to have done that ?)

It may be for practical reasons. The tie is in February, so they might have to play indoors; are there places in Germany where you could have an outdoor court be reliably playable at this time of year?

And Argentina has Nalbandian, who's a beast on indoor carpet. Indoor clay may have been decided as the lesser of two evils compared to trying to face Nalbandian on a more traditional indoor court.

I think the Gerry Weber stadium had a roof? If it does I personally think Halle would have been one of the best places to hold the tie. You would think Petzschner and Kohlschreiber would stand up well against any of the Argies on grass.

Isn't Kukushkin playing for Kazakhstan?

The guy upset Monfils at the AO. Very fun match.

Behold his mighty, I'm calling an upset for the spanish team.

Japan has a suprisingly good looking team (in terms of ranking) with #20, #90 and #106, they have done very well recently.

Japan Croatia 1 1

Great matches by both winners:

G. Soeda 6 3 6 6 7
I. Dodig 7 6 4 3 5

Fin. K. Nishikori 4 4 3
I. Karlovic 6 6 6

Karlovic was dominating Nishikori even from the baseline, and returned very aggressively.

So Tipsy has the first set against Filip Prpic, but Prpic has vastly exceeded my initial expectations. I've seen him play league matches and he's a beast, actually Swedish team champion. And his dad is a fantastic stringer!

I said don't turn your back on Japan. I still don't think they'll win, but they are getting some serious talent now. I like those kids' futures.

Wonder This as well

Yeah only Mayer is half decent on clay and even then he would be a huge favourite on a hard court against those players, Petz would probably get a win or two as well..maybe they were scared of Del Potro when they picked clay? Either way bad decision.

Scared? Potro is a great clay courter.

Strange that they didn't choose grass in this tie.

Way down in group 1 a Murrayless Britain won the first set against Slovakia, Evans-Lacko.

Mayer would fancy his chances against him more on clay than a hard court..as would Kohlschreiber, I'm guessing he's injured at the moment though.
Nope. He just didn't want to switch to clay in the middle of the hardcourt season.

Melzer takes Kunitsyn in 5. 1-0 Austria.

Juan Carlos Ferrero down a break in the 5th. HUGE surprise there. Kukushkin running on momentum right now.

Isner starts out with a hold of serve. 1-0 Isner. Now 1-1.

Seppi and Stepanek take a set a piece and 3-3 in the third. Great match there.

Troicki up 2 sets on Ryderstedt and already up a rubber.

Japan and Croatia split going into tomorrow.

Nalbandian getting on his game the last two sets with Argentina already up 1-0.

And I'll be dating Ana Ivanovic tomorrow.

Comon, where are the pics. Surely you must have taken pics with her. It didn't even go to day 3! That is how bad the Swiss team is, why did they pics clay when Isner had take Nadal to 5 sets at RG? You lose big time!

Updates:

Spain leading Kazakhstan 4-0 - Granollers up a set in the 5th rubber.

Austria up 3-1 - Haider-Maurer split a set with Kunitsyn so far in the 5th rubber. I did not see Austria dominating like this, and Bogomolov is looking like a fool for leaving the States right now.

France up 2-1 with the deciders tonight. Still think France wins both of those. Raonic can't handle Tsonga, and Benneteau's shooting up the ranks, so I think he can handle Pospisil. Did think France would sweep, but guess not.

USA beats Switzerland 5-0. Very very happy I was wrong on this one. That was an epic beatdown, and I love seeing the United States do this well on clay. They did this without both Bryans, and a 19 year old kid. Wait till the Bryans come back in April together.

Czech Republic beats Italy 4-1. I was spot on with the score, but I expected Seppi to take the one rubber, not Bolelli.

Croatia beats Japan 3-2. Right on the button.

Serbia up against Sweden 3-1. Even if Sweden wins the final match, it really wasn't the battle I thought it would be.

Argentina beats Germany 4-1. Right on the button.

I'm a bit disappointed over the general state of tennis here in Sweden. Once upon a time we had to cut people from the top 10 when playing DC ties, the 10th best Swede was ranked around 35-40, we won infinity majors. Somehow, Sweden is still the 2nd most successful country of all time on the male side, and there's been a swede in a major final in each decade from the 70's, we had one who can be considered one of the greatest ever, one who was the best tactician the game has ever seen and one who had one of the best volleys and backhand of all time. Where did everything go wrong?
