Federer Has Never Lost a Set in a Wimbledon Semifinal

Federer is 7-0 in Wimbledon Semifinal Matches and even more remarkable is 21-0 in sets played.

Amazing that has never lost a set in 7 wimbledon semifinals, but even as a Federer worshiper, it wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't win a set against Novak in the semifinal.

It doesn't sound like you are a genuine Fed worshiper by that statement.

Anyway, that's an interesting statistic. Federer is in great form, and if his back holds up, I expect him to thrash Djokovic in the same fashion Djokovic thrashed Federer earlier this year at the French Open.

Possibly maybe. Nole won on three set, but was led several time and was a bit lucky that Fed wasn't able to hold his serve and played badly overall. Friday could be a very different stroy.

Very true. And from the looks of it, Djokovic is practically in 2011 Wimbledon form except for the slight hiccup he had against Stepanek.

What an exciting semifinal this will turn out to be as the pair's first meeting at Wimbledon.

He'll lose 3 on Friday.

My take on things is that it all boils down to whether Djoker can maintain things mentally.

Both guys will be dealing with pressure, but if they both deal with it effectively, Djoker's current form, physicality, and consistency trumps old man Fed.

I think Fed's best chance, is if Djoker just doesn't keep things together mentally over long stretches throughout the course of a best of 5 set match (or at least, at a bunch of crucial moments). Odds of that happening are pretty slim, considering the kind of mental toughness Djoker has demonstrated over the past year and half or so.

Nadal is 7-0 in Roland Garros quarter-finals, having never lost a set in any of his encounters (and he will probably add to this tally).
He also holds the surface-streak record of 81.

All at the tender age of 26.

And to think Bjorkman was so close to getting a set's worth of games across his 2-6 0-6 2-6 loss to Fed in 2006!

What vintage NSK to bring a Nadal stat into a totally unrelated thread. Do you have a stat for Rafa and second rounds at Wimbledon? :)

That's a crazy statistic!

I'm fully confident that Roger can win based on today's matches. He needs to do three things; serve amazingly well (like today), use the slice to move Djokovic around (very effective on grass AND against Novak, as shown by Mayer), and cut down on the unforced errors (like he did today and against Malisse).

This is Federer's best chance to get to #1, #7, and #17 and I'm certain he'll fight to get each of them.

Are you talking to me? There's that 'NSK' abbreviation again. :?

Nadal at the finals of Roland Garros has lost 100 games in 7 finals.
Federer at the finals of Wimbledon has lost 161 games in 7 finals.

Nadal at the semi-finals of Roland Garros has lost 79 games in 7 semi-finals.
Federer at the semi-finals of Wimbledon has lost 79 games in 7 semi-finals.

Nadal at the quarter-finals of Roland Garros has lost 63 games in 7 quarter-finals.
Federer at the quarter-finals of Wimbledon has lost 164 games in 11 quarter-finals.

Nadal is clearly more dominant at the French Open than Federer at Wimbledon.

Not to mention that Nadal is the only one in the history of tennis to win slams on HC, grass and clay in a single year, right?

If anyone hijacked the thread it's you and Colin, by responding to his post.

Is it so hard to just read the post, and if you think it's irrelevant, just move on?

You are just as guilty now of "hijacking" this thread by not only responding to the post, but actually asking him a question to respond even further.

Why don't you just admit to the fact that you actually ENJOY having threads getting "hijacked" and getting the opportunity to get into yet another fight fanbase fight :)

Sure, because Nadal's grand slam triumphs are heavily weighted to Roland Garros, to the surprise of nobody, while Fed is more diverse.

Again, NSK, what does Rafa's record have to do with this thread? Wait, don't answer, because I know already: nothing.

The topic is about Federer never losing a set in a Wimbledon semi-final. Nadal has achieved the same statistic in Roland Garros quarter-finals.

Nadal and Federer have also lost the same amount of games in their 7 semi-finals at Roland Garros at Wimbledon respectively. That is a fascinating statistic. :-|

I think this could very likely change come Friday. Novak is not going to go away quietly. This is going to be a war.

I'll give you the second one. That semi stat is a pretty interesting nugget. The quarterfinal-semifinal comparison, not really.

Stop responding, you're letting him hijack the thread.

Interesting that once Federer gets late into the second week, he never falters.

I predict Federer in 4.. splitting the first sets but then Federer raising his level enough to take a close 3rd setter followed by Djokovic's level dropping in the 4th.

I hope, anyway.

What's the reason behind this. He will lose a customary set here and there but by the time semis come he will be in full Wimbledon mode.
And so incredibly strong in semis

And why didnt the so-called notorious "French crowd" do anything when Federer did that? He told them to shut the hell up and no one booed or anything of the sort and they have lynched other players for lesser things.

Or was that directed to someone other than the crowd?

That's pretty impressive.

What's even more impressive is when you consider what Nadal has achieved in what is supposed to be "Federer's era". Nadal has managed to win 3 consecutive slams on 3 different surfaces in a calendar year, and still owns the surface streak record of 81 (the only man in world history to accomplish this). He also is very likely to break and set a number of new records in the coming years; Nadal could become the first man to win 3 singles Olympic gold medals in 3 consecutive attempts on 3 different surfaces (on 3 different continents), and could break the Borg/Sampras/Nadal/Federer tie of winning 1 slam for 8 years in a row. All this while maintaining an 8-2 slam H2H against Federer and an 18-10 record overall.

I'll be happy when that happened. But until then, if I were a betting man, I would put my money on Djoko.

I think that stat is tainted by the fact that Fred has not reached the last 2 semis.

Also in the years that Fred did not drop a set in the semi, how many did he drop in the QF, or how many in total did he drop before the semi.

I'm aware of what Nadal has done and have the utmost respect for his achievements. I am first and foremost a Nadal fan (always will be), but not losing a set in successive semifinals is still impressive, imo.

LOL, yeah.

You can tell he's really pissed off though, this Nadal loss really got to him. His trolling used to be far more refined, nowadays (with 2 accounts he has at the moment) he sounds like a broken record, like he has yet to come to terms of Nadal actually not being there in the 2nd week.

Wow....I just got totally owned by your brilliant response

You, sir/madam, are an internet posting genius...will take me a few days to recover from this. :(

On a general note, related to the topic at hand, since I'm old enough to actually wish I was a teenager again, I'll be rooting for Old Man Fed in his upcoming semi vs Djoker.

It was pretty special when Sampras won that final, odds-against-him, major back in '02, so would be nice to see Fed pull off something similar before he retires. He still has several chances to do so, beyond just this WO, but no better time than the present.

Thanks for the stat OP,

But will you explain how 21-0 is more remarkable than not losing a set in 7 semifinals? Arnt they the same stat?
