Nadal's looks more impressive. Seems as if he just breezes through the draw at RG.

2 titles without dropping a set

Feather

Rafa's seven at RG because he lost only once there ! And he won twice without even dropping a set

Rafa's dominance at RG is something out of the extraordinary. They should rename RG as RN, lolz

depends what your personal definition of impressive is.

nadal has obviously dominated RG much more than federer has dominated wimbledon. during nadals 7 title runs you can barely name any matches where he was in actual danger of losing. hes lost just 1 match there in his entire career

which is of course due to the different natures of the surfaces. upsets and tough matches for the favorites are much more likely to happen on grass than on clay. if you dominate grass you can still run into tight matches when big hitting opponents catch fire. on clay if you dominate the way nadal does then youre basically invincible (which is what the record shows).

so which is more impressive to you? the way nadal dominates clay (and thus RG) by being the ultimate clay court beast that he is and winning 7 RG titles so comfortably that he never even came close to losing one of those matches..

or federer winning 7 wimbledon titles despite the fact that it is so much harder to dominate the tournament even if you are by far the best on the surface, having to go through lots of tight moments and close matches along the way, being clutch whenever it really matters or bailing out.

hardly possible to compare really. depends on everyones personal preference

I suppose you could also ask: "What's the toughest tennis Major to win"?
Level of competition has to be analyzed also.

I would have to go with Nadal. The main reason is that it took Nadal 8 tries to win 7 titles, whereas it took 10+years for Fed to win 7 Wimbledon.
Plus, it's physically more demanding to go through each and every match on clay, playing best of 5. But yes, grass dominance is not easy because you can sometimes come across a big hitter whose on fire, which is really tough on grass.
Lastly, the way Nadal has dominated RG, Fed has not dominated Wimbledon. Even now, with Nole around, Nadal still seems unbeatable on clay. He has been just brutal...

I agree that the competition could be analysed, but it hard to do as the dominance of Nadal shrinks all his opponents.

It seems to me howether that Fed had a slightly higher competition in Wimby, with the like of Nadal, Roddick, Hewitt, Safin, Haas, Gonzales, Karlovic, etc.

Nadal on the other hand had only Federer, Djokovic and Soderling to care of, the other players being completly unable to hurt him on a long clay match as pointed Purge.

You can find example in past where player has dominated Roland garros more than wimbledon.

For example Borg If you compare his 5 wimbledon title with 6 Roland garros then you can see he lost much less games on clay.

Its very difficult to loss less games on grass compare to clay bcoz its very difficult to break your opponent serve on grass.

Nowadays who knows.. The competition outside the top 3-4 is major suckage at best. In fact, its the worst talented young field in many decades that we have in tennis.. So nowadays you really only have Maybe 2 major hurdles (3 at the most to win each slam)

Fed never had to deal with a field like a Sampras, Becker, Edberg etc.. on grass. In fact for many years his best compeition was... Roddick. As for Nadal, he's mainly overcame guys who's games are more steered towards hard courts.. Not who's games excel on clay. . Games like Kuerten, Lendl, Bruguera, Borg etc.. had.

Both had questionable opposition at both slams for many years. When Fed and Djokovic is your best competition on clay all these years that says something (Fed was getting smacked around at 23 years old by an old plastic hip Guga). Djokovic is competent on clay but not "great" on clay.

Roddick is a good grass court player doesn't measure up to the competency of those in the past on grass. Not even close and thats who Roger had to worry about mainly for a handful of years

Stop giving NADALWON ideas of a new thread. There was more competition on Grass than on Clay.

Federer would have trouble with Hewitt,Murray, Djokovic, Roddick and Nadal on their best on grass.

Nadal has to deal with Federer, Djokovic, LOLmagro, and Ferrer
on Clay.

Nadal is the best clay courter of all time....his game greatly suits the clay like nobody else.

Federer is arguably the best grass courter of all time...likewise his game suits the grass, but there are others who can pick the steam on grass.

Nadal has had more cake draws than Federer. Then again even if you give Nadal the hardest draw on Clay he would still win. That one unfair point....to Nadal losing less sets.

Federer peak level on Grass is far more destructive than Nadal peak level on Clay. People were far more scared to play Federer than Nadal.

Though both are incredible achievements, Nadal's seven has to be more impressive for three main reasons.

1. Nobody else has done it.
2. He did it in fewer attempts.
3. He dropped fewer sets (though it is easier to drop sets on a quicker surface).

Umm, rather than say NO, I'm going to say, what is your DATA to back this claim. You could be right, but you aren't going to convince me until you show me something other than "People were far more scared".

Both are amazing, but I give it to Nadal.

The guy came into RG in 2005, and owned the place from day one. He has played some incredible clay court tennis, with 08 being the pinnacle of his clay court prowess. He has only one loss, and has only been pushed to five sets once at RG, that in itself is a remarkable accomplishment.

He's won the title twice without losing a set, and in 08 he barely lost games. Plus, he outright owns the record for most RG's won.

An outright legend on the red clay.

Definitely Federer's is more impressive. There are a lot more contenders for the Wimbledon title, i.e. much deeper field. Also a lot more dangerous early round players that can potentially knock you out, just ask Nadal about that ;)

Nadal as well. Beating Fed there 5 times, a great claycourter and arguably the GOAT overall. And Nadal is 52-1 at the French. That's crazy.

Nadal dominated FO in a way that no other player I've ever seen dominated any slam (Borg was way before my time). He lost one single match there in all these years and his level of play in 2008 FO was beyond ridiculous.

Which will be more impressive in 5 years? Rafa because he will have at least 10 by then but federer is getting old and that might have been his last wimbledon final, although i would like to see him get 8 but i think after that his chances are pretty slim because of his age

Nadal easily. 7 titles by 26 vs 7 titles by 31. Going into Wimbledon you hardly ever thought of Federer as a total lock to win the way you do Nadal at RG. Nadal is also the undisputed and unquestioned best clay courter of all time. Federer is not the undisputed and unquestioned best grass courter of all time.

Yes that would make sense except for the fact that Federer has same number of wins and one more final. Then we have the fact that Federer lost way fewer sets in his wins. Finally, we have the fact that the only time they played each other (2001) Federer beat Sampras at Wimbledon. So yeah if you totally ignore facts then you would be correct.

Really? How many times did the trainer come on during his tournament?

Not sure if you're serious or have watched any of his matches. Fed was suffering back pain against Malisse in the 4th round. The movement and inability to bend over was clearly visible because of his back tightened up. He end up wearing an undershirt at the beginning of the match from there on.

Nadal's 7 RG titles is nothing. Because he is the Clay GOAT, only 20 RG titles would be impressive for him. And 4 times he defeated Federer who folds when playing against him, plus another free ticket to the final in 2005. So 5 of them was gift-wrapped from Fed (especially 08'). This years RG proved that Rafa is getting worse on clay as Novak Djokovic won 8 games in a row against him, resulting him moaning about the rain.

On the other hand, Federer has won his 7th Wimbledon at the age of 30 (nearly 31), something that Nadal will never do. He managed to defeat Nadal twice and nearly thrice when Nadal was dominating in the H2H, making it even more impressive. He also managed to rebel against the UK crowd this year.

Federer has a better Wimbledon record, a better overall grass record, and more grass court titles. Please explain how Sampras is the better grass court player.

Not that I think Federer is the best ever on grass. It's hard to compare eras, especially since grass is played on so scarcely these days, but I'd give that distinction to Laver.

I need to go with Federer. While maybe from a pure concept of draw Nadal would win since Roger played Andy 3 times and not that he is bad (he played his best match ever in one but lost). I look at it like this, look at tennis history once the king is taken down we never really hear from him again. Roger was knocked off by not one but two guys and worked hard and is for now back on top. At 30 years old this is amazing. After being the KING who else would get this done? What we saw in London is sports lure! I think it should go down as one of the 10 most amazing things in all of sports. I also know what Andre did but he was never the King that honor belonged to Pete.

I didn't read through all of the details of these 14 slams, because from my viewpoint, it doesn't matter. Both records are incredible.

But going from my own gut feel, I think that Rafa's 7 RG's are just a bit more impressive than Fed's 7 WO's, because Rafa has done this by the age of 26, with only one single loss ever so far.

Add to this, that Rafa has the outright record over Borg, without any tie, and it adds to my feeling that Rafa's 7 RG's are just slightly greater than Fed's 7 WO's.

(But despite the above, I would still rather have 7 WO's over 7 RG's, because Wimbledon will always be the most special to me. It's the slam that sparked my interest in tennis and seemed so awe-inspiring, back in my early childhood. It wasn't until I was a few years older, that I even recognized any other slam as being something distinguishable in their own right :)

No question Nadal has dominated RG more so than Federer has dominated Wimby.

Maybe a harder question is, who has the most impressive accomplishments at [RG + Wimby combined]

Nadal:
9 W (7 FO + 2 Wimby)
3 F (0 + 3) - Reached at least final 12 times
0 SF (0 + 3) - Reached at least semi-final 12 times

Federer:
8 W (1 FO + 7 Wimby)
5 F (4 + 1) - Reached at least final 13 times
2 SF (2 + 0) - Reached at least semi-final 15 times

Looking at the differences between the two sets of achievements, how does an extra win (Nadal) compare against two extra finals and two additional semi-finals (Federer)?

Points wise:
Win = 2000
2F + 2SF = 3840

Not saying points is accurate measure of achievement here though. I would take the win over the extra finals and semi-finals. But it's close.

:)
I thought this was supposed to be an unbiased discussion...

No it's not. Del Potro won a slam but not Murray.

That's my point. Nadal won all his finals but not Federer. You're putting all the emphasis merely on finals made instead of on finals both made AND won. 100% vs. 88%

Not only that but Nadal won his 7 titles in 8 years. Took Federer 10.

Sure, according to the stats, I have never lost in the Roland Garros finals. So my achievement equals Nadals.

Nadal, no contest.

He only lost one time, Federer has a couple of loses and won some tough matches. Nadal really destroys his opponents most of the times.

Using your logic a player who makes the final is worse than losing in the early round. What your saying is Fed's 2008 W final is worse than for him losing in the early round, because he'll be perfect 7/7 in the final. I don't buy that.

Both are amazing feats.

It is not fair to talk about Nadal losing less sets and games, because obviously you always will lose more sets and games (on average) on grass than on clay (even if you are equally good on both surfaces). And you would lose even a lot more sets and games on 90s and 80s grass because it was way faster (especially the balls as well).

So taking into account the differences between grass and clay, both achievements are equally amazing.
