rankings from 6 weeks prior to an event are used for entry. so he'll get direct in to Cincinnati. and the USO.

He's not DA for Cinci, he'll have to go thru qualies, which at this point is probably better so he can maybe, hopefully, get 1 or 2 wins in a row.
He is DA for Winston Salem & the US Open tho. And probably 1 or 2 tourneys after the US Open. He should be ok till his Bangkok pts drop, which is in Late Sep, early Oct.

guess Cincy has a pretty high ranking requirement for DA, wasn't Young top 50 five weeks ago? that's not enough to get direct in?
Wins in qualies don't count for win/loss records, so the streak could continue if he manages to get out of qualies & loses 1st round.

It's sad to see. DY is 3 years younger than me, and I remember playing in the Mi-d-west Closed 16s in Indianapolis (where the 18s were also held) and heard about some 12 or 13-year-old tearing up the 18s. He went on to win it that year, beating guys that were destined for some powerhouse schools like OSU, Michigan etc. Now, the Mi-d-west Closed isn't Kalamazoo, but it's a pretty tough tournament and that's a VERY impressive accomplishment. Then, a couple years later, there were the famous McEnroe comments.
And obviously, things haven't shaken out the way DY hoped. It's a good case study for encouraging kids to go to college and see what happens, unless they're already winning multiple rounds a tournament at age 16, 17, 18 ala Nadal, Querrey, Gasquet etc. It's especially true when the player is undersized ala DY or Lauren Davis on the women's side.
And obviously, things haven't shaken out the way DY hoped. Well, if ever you were going to feel confident about an opponent, it's when you draw Donald Young. Especially when he (DY) comes into the match on this kind of form. Chardy must've laughed out loud when the draw came out. Until he saw Tsonga's name.

Yeah I kept thinking about how Chardy just came off as a total pro. He wasn't playing his best but kept coming up with the shots, has weapons, and kept his head in the match. I'm sure his confidence got some help knowing his opponents reputation.
I gotta disagree, & I think you're contradicting yourself.
You just said he was beating college level kids when he was 13, now ur saying he should have gone to college. If ur capable of wins like that at 13, u dont go to college at 17-18.
Furthermore, he had won multiple Challengers at age 17 and was top 100. Also a good indicator to skip college.
Last yr he got to 39 in the world. Also a very good indicator that he shouldnt have gone to college.
When Spadea was in the midst of his losing streak would u have said he shouldve gone to college??
What about Golubev?? He had a similar streak last yr, after winning Hamburg. Should he have gone to college also??
The problem is he has no confidence right now, coupled with the impression that it doesnt seem like he's working as hard as he did last yr, plus the fact that he doesnt have the best coaching = bad results.
Im sure its sort of a self fulfilling prophecy at this pt. He's not expecting to win and thats exactly what happens.

He's been lucky to draw a qualifier at Cincy. Which by no means guarantees him a win though. Chardy, Rochus, Matosevic, Falla, Stakhovsky, Ram, Goffin, Lu, Levine, Jancovicz, Fognini, Dodig, Mayer, and Mathieu all won their first round qualifying matches today.

A combination of being undersized and not having the movement to compensate did him in.
If he had Ferrer's work ethic he could've broken into the top 20 now with his talent, but he's too lazy to even approach the amount of conditioning that Blake and Roddick put themselves through.

Actually drawing a qualifier isn't so good for him, as the guy will have won two matches already and will be confident, especially when he sees he's playing DY. Don't be surprised to see another loss. Drawing a random guy ranked in the 30's who hadn't played yet would've been better for him.

Not that poor. For losing 16 consecutive matches, Young has earned 133,071 US dollars (One of those defeats was unpaid – at the London Olympics). Not bad work if you can get it.

Will be interesting to see who the qualifier is and whether they've met.
The only guy in qualies it'd have been good for DY to play was probably Christian Harrison, & he lost 1st rd.
Matosevic owned him in the past, Falla had beaten him this yr, even tho their H2H is close, & their matches have been close, dont think he'd be favored over someone like Goffin or Fognini. Pretty much everyone else has been getting wins at tour level. Even Challenger level wins would be good cause it's still a win.
But, considering his past H2H, I'd say Ram & Falla would be the best matchups for him right now. He owned Ram in the Challengers when they played, & I think he's more talented than Falla, & he's beaten him before & they're both lefty so Falla wont have that advantage.
