Fair enough. I agree it sounds like their new mapping app will take some time to iron out the bugs. The lack of Flash support bugs me too especially on the Mac. Give me the user the option of running Flash and running my battery down if I so desire. Heck, even warn me before I run Flash.

As for cost, it is supply and demand of course but it seems like most of my friends that have been long time Mac users have their computers for a decade or more. If it costs double but lasts twice as long, then the price/year is the same.

Agree with everything you've said here...

I'm sure if Android makers could demand the premium that Apple does, they would.

No doubt...

Again, I don't want to seem like I'm hating on Apple. They're in a very enviable position right now the way Microsoft was before it and IBM before Microsoft. Thats just the way the business cycle runs. But apart of that cycle is people starting to turn against or at least highlight the short comings of the current champ; even former devotees such as myself...

And regarding the Mac computer; its been true in my case. I had a Mac mini since they first came out with Intel chips (06 or 05 i think). My original is still going strong and is more than useable today. I updated to the newest version about 2 weeks ago; because I found a very good deal on one (on Amazon, of course Apple refuses to discount their products much directly) and wanted a dedicated graphics card and the improved chip set. Everything is working very well, as i expect. Since my first mac mini at least 3 pcs have cycled through my home or others that I got a computer for them. Macs do last longer (in my case). I thinks its more of a software thing than a hardware thing...

Interesting, thanks for sharing your experiences with the Mac. One thing I realize with the Mac versus PC is that Mac products just don't seem to annoy me. Windows is always popping crap up bugging me about stuff. Stop it Bill!

I used to work with a guy like you but he was gaga over Windows products (including the phone). He had an almost irrational anger towards Apple. What's great is that Apple came out with the iPhone and the other phone makers had to play catch up. In some cases, Androids have features that don't make it to the iPhone for years. Competition is good for us no matter what we like to use. If you don't like Apple and think it is too expensive, then there are other options out there for you but I don't see the need to denigrate others who do like Apple products.

know party loyalists who think like that. forget trying to have a rational conversation or discussion with them. they take it so personal.

You have comprehension problem. I have never owned an Iphone. All I have owned is Droid. I will not get my Iphone until October 5th. How can I be a fanboy? If anything, I am extremely well versed in Droid and sharing my experience. You keep telling me about Droid like I don't understand. I do understand. That is why I am getting an iphone now.

HTML5 has made life without flash rather insignificant for me.

For review you called us Fanboys, sheep and slaves now.

I never called you that! I said I refuse to be any of those...

and please don't try to act as if HTML 5 is widely adopted now, it will be mostly due to Apple's clout (some would say bullying), but not yet. So how long did you just put up with your Ipad not supporting flash, yet didn't seem to have a problem with it? Some would call that fanboyism: over looking obvious flaws or deficiencies because of unconditional love...

Also, you seem to be well versed in a very outdated phone (the original Evo), and you were comparing it directly to the Ipad2 and what you expect your new Iphone will be. I'm sure your new phone will be much better than your current very old (by cell phone standards) phone, but that’s to be expected. As, I've shown the new Iphone 5 is just now caught up to upper end Android phones that have been out for nearly a year or longer...

I think far more people would own apple products if they were cheaper. But then they wouldnt be as good.

PCs are cheaper. You need to know your stuff to have one running in prime shape. I built my last quadcore PC. It was not too hard for me, but the average joe would not want to do this. It saved me $800.

I definitely think Mac software is better. It optimizes hardware better and is more secure due to being a self contained ecosystem.

I feel the same way about iphones. the top 3 phones are the HTC Evo, Samsung SIII and Iphone 5. they all have similar guts..16 gigs of space, 1 gig of RAM..etc. But the iphone OS is the most mature and smoothest still. the question is if you want to pay for that..I didnt at first, but now I definitely do.

DRII - I have owned the brand new LTE EVO for 3 months now. Prior to that I owned the orginal EVO.

Once again, I am switching from a brand new EVO LTE which was released in June to the Iphone 5. And I cant freaking wait.

Here is another good comparison chart between the top phones today:

http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2012/09/iphone5-spec-showdown/

One thing to keep in mind about the iPhone 5 is that it does NOT support simultaneous voice and data on LTE networks, i.e. Verizon and Sprint. Otherwise the phones are fairly similar from a technical standpoint. A little bigger screen on the Samsung...iOS vs. Android...

I want to take a good look at the Nokia Lumia when it comes out. Also, they are going to release the S4 next March if you can hold out.

Yep...

my Windows partition on my Mini is constantly updating with various Windows software

It seems like half my allotted space for Windows is already full, and I only use it for games for the most part and only downlaoded one so far...

The EVO line from HTC lost its luster a long time ago. Once, it was the best Android but now is not even close... The HTC One or its predecessor (Rezound) are far better examples of Android phones from HTC vs the new Evo. HTC itself is lagging now, a while ago it was the top Android maker but not anymore.

Verizon should be deploying voice over LTE soon (12/12-1/13) which will allow simultaneous voice and data on iP5. This was a drawback when I was choosing my new network, but I wanted the data and voice coverage that Verizon offers. Hopefully VoLTE deploys soon and it's a non-issue.

I went verizon because the network is so much stronger in my area. Its another reason I had to leave sprint. If LTE will allow simultaneous data and talk, that is awesome. I did know about that issue, but I thought about it, and I rarely needed both.

Honestly, the EVO LTE and the HTC One X are the exact same phone, just on different networks. The HTC One X Is currently HTC's flagship phone, but the fact that we are having to debate this is yet another reason why I prefer the simplicity of the iPhone.

Love the PJ poast by JD..actually make sense to me. Blackberries were the goat for so long.I really loved those phones. And it is just like JD stated before, what killed the BB was the OS of the Iphone. BB apps are very bad, and they are just too behind the times now.

It's not a Verizon issue, it's an iPhone 5 issue. You can use voice and data simultaneously on LTE using a Samsung (and others) device.

I know. There's a third radio required for CDMA to support voice + data at the same time. When you talk and browse, the voice connection drops to a 3G wave, while the data streams over LTE. Because Apple combined everything in the one chip, there are only two radios so it's not supported.

With that said, when Voice over LTE deploys, it will render the third radio useless, as the LTE connection will simultaneously support an LTE voice signal as well as an LTE data stream. This is likely why Apple left the additional radio out. In a number of months (hopefully, lol), the third radio will just be a waste of space.

Have you updated then? :) I have a question, are the timestamps for text messages still set at those random intervals?

Yes, they haven't fixed that.

Overall:

- I haven't noticed any performance issues with the 4S
- Battery is draining as fast as ever (I guess I'm using it in ways I wouldn't usually as I'm poking about a lot)
- Most useful new feature I've discovered so far is the ability to attach a photo to from within an email, rather than having to select a a photo and then email it.

I know someone who knows things...

I'm putting a lot of faith into this knowledge coming into fruition!

Other than Maps, I have no major issues. The App Store had connection issues earlier, but seems ok now. If I used Facebook more, I'd probably be more excited by that update. Do Not Disturb could be useful once I've put some thought into hope best it would suit me.

Yeah I'm looking forward to FB/Twitter integration. I had this on an Android phone I had a couple years ago and really liked it. Phone itself was awful, but it was a "social machine" they said, and the integration and direct post/tweet options were very useful.

Do not disturb should be awesome. All notifications are silent, but you can customize a group that can have calls come through, and you can also set it so that repeat calls from the same number within three minutes, it will pick up the second call (essentially in case of emergencies and people calling multiple times in a row).

The evo is not the same as the one or the rezound.

Also my rezound can do data and voice at the same time.

The bottom line is that android aka google phones are basically electronic dog leashes. They track your movements physically and actually predict what you're going to do and when you're going to do it. The amount of information being culled is absolutely unreal.

Apple's devices serve the same function, only you'll be using safari for your google searches.

haha I am still on blackberry. But, I was using my friend's 4S to see what its like. I had to check my twitter and he was using WiFi at the time. Had to refresh the page at least 5 times for it too load. Seemed slow at times too.

CNET's head is so far up AAPL's 'you know what' they cannot be taken seriously.

Jailbreaking is an option, but now companies are blocking their apps on phones that have been jailbroken.
Interesting. Hadn't heard this. Any idea how they pull that off? And bummer about the deficiencies in texting. That shouldn't be that tough for them to implement.

I think the Samsung is clearly better - iPhone is prettier and great at taking others' ideas and making them their own - then getting ridiculous patents and suing (rant over).

But yrs ago switched from BB Curve to an iPhone 3 (for the purpose of creating/selling apps) and since apps still don't sell as well in the other OS's, I'll stay in the iPhone world. But the 4S is still fine - so won't go to the 5 until winter or spring.

I'm not really sure how they pull it off. I use an app called Sky Go, which shows live Sky tv and is very useful if you're out and about. I watched alot of the US Open on it, they have all the films, any football that's on when i'm away from a tv etc.. If you jailbreak, the app doesn't work, it's starting to become a regular thing throughout alot of apps.

As for the text messaging, I agree! We have so much information available to us these days, to not know what time someone text you is a bit of a strange one. Same for the pictures that don't tell you the time and date. I was browsing through and had some from weddings, events i'd been to, birthdays over the last few years etc.. to not be able to have a quick look when they took place takes away some of the enjoyment out of them.

As you say, it's not really difficult to put these little things into the OS. Even if they wanted to leave it as it is and have them as an option for people, it doesn't make alot of sense.

You cant greally go wrong right now. It boils down to personal preference, which is why i think people who criticise others over that are pretty lame.

I was blown away by the new lte evo and s3 when they first came out. Picked the evo. My biggest issue is more with the software. I hate touchwiz and sense. Dont understand the logic of tainting android, all it does it slow it down. If you root your phone to get pure android, you lose functionality in your phone in some areas.

I have had the ipad for years and have never considered jailbreaking it. I will not jailbreak my iphone either.

Got the apple tv as a gift..think i may try and jailbreak that though since i never use it. I can sell it on craigs for a nice price if i still dont use it afterwords.

Ios6 is fine for me right now. Seems like the font when i am typing is a little thinner or different somehow.

Have you noticed any performance issues, or haven't you had it long enough to assess?

I think it probably happens with all smartphones over time. The iPhone 4's in the family are quite laggy these days. Even so, i've heard of Android phones not being as responsive over time.

Yes, Ive been had LTE for nearly a year now! SO have other Android phones, Apple is just getting into that game. And yes my phone does data and voice at the same time, yours won't out of the box, if ever!

Sounds like your problem is with Sprint and not the EVO!

Its already been clearly posted here that over lte we will be able to do data and voice on the iphone. Not a huge issue, i cant remember last time i have needed it.

At least now you understand that i DO own the best htc droid phone. I clearly illustrated my problems with it in this very thread if you just read my posts with an unbiased mind.

I definitley do have a problem with sprint as well or id stay with with them and get the iphone on their network..but why do that? The sprint network is horrible for smartphones here. I thought it would finally get better but that was clearly BS so im happy to leave.

What is your issue with people buying an iphone? Have you seen how many racquts we buy here? Anyway, i paid $200.

Dude,

That is so strange that they dont timestamp since imessage does. Do they want us to use imessage? Lol..its odd.

It's very odd, i've been waiting for years for them to put it in! Every blog I seem read about a new iOS before it gets released, people are always saying this is the one that will have it implemented, only for it not to be. On the Apple forums there are countless threads of people asking for it.

By nature i'm all over the place and am always running late, if you're arranging something last minute over text, you have to guess when someone says they will meet you in 10 minutes for instance. I've used it for work too and it's even more of a problem, especially when the business keeps a record of messages about different clients. I work in law and sometimes records of conversations are used, as you can imagine, a message seen with no way of finding out the date or time for it is useless.
