Seriously considering switch from iPhone to android/galaxy

I will be switching from the iPhone 5s to a Galaxy device when my next upgrade becomes available.

iPhones, for me, are easier to use. I know everyone says that, but in my life it's true. However, I feel that the ability to increase storage by swapping out SD cards and having a better battery (and the ability to switch out a back-up battery if needed) are worth the learning curve.

Plus I'll be looking to dive in and root it. Really make it my own. I demoed a Galaxy S4 for a week and was really impressed with the whole "running two apps at once" deal. I could browse TT while watching tennis highlights on YouTube. That was neat.

I'm seriously thinking about getting a Galaxy S6 Edge. Never owned an iPhone and I don't want to. I prize my intelligence.

So i've got a Galaxy S5 and an iPhone 6 Plus.

The iPhone is nice, but a bit basic. You have to use it the way Apple want you to. Most of it is good, but if you don't like something? Tough.

The S5 is alot better to use in my experience.

The new S6 looks incredible, not too interested in the edge version myself, but the standard S6 is Samsung back to it's very best imo.

It's a nobrainer Galaxies are way better phones then iCraps. I get fits when I have to use my wife's iPhone.

I've said this before... Owning an iPhone is like traveling on interstates, eating at nice chain restaurants and drinking Budweiser beer. Very smooth, consistent and overall pleasant experience. Rarely will you get lost or sick.

Android is like taking the scenic route, eating at mom and pop local restaurants, and drinking craft beer. Unless you know what you are doing, you could get lost with food poisoning. But if you know the back roads and the good places to eat, its a better is still inconsistent experience.

To the OP... Just wait a couple of more weeks for the Asus Zenfone 2.

My favorite phone of all time is the Nokia N900 and it still does most if not everything the new phones do even at 5 and 1/2 years of age.
Did not like the windows phone as the n900 does more.
HTC M7 killed my contacts taking one contact separating them by each of contact locations(my emails, facebook, twitter, etc).
Samsung S5 mic did not work and they did nothing to fix it. I lasted 2 months talking on speaker phone(different mic) with no private conversations before biting the bullet and paying the etf. I will never buy another samsung phone.
The LG G3 is a great phone but the sound clarity was not as good as the 5 year old N900.
Out of options with phones and providers I ended up with the new i6 128gb. Multiple people commented that I sound like I am on a land line not a cell phone. I am pleased with the phone it works well. I dont like itunes or their icloud services.

The new s6 will have no expandable memory or removable battery. Taking away the main points that made them different.
The New M9 from HTC is what the M8 should have been.

LG G3 or G4 and the i6 are the phones I would recommend!

I really like the iphone in general but I like my 3.5 inch screen. The 5s etc are very tall and look strange and are impractical, in my opinion.

I just want to be able to easily sync music wirelessly, and even just plug the phone into usb and use the memory storage for anything, whether that's movies or whatever.

I am thinking of buying a second hand samsung s4 mini and if I don't like it I'll just sell it on.

Thankfully I only use my phone for basic stuff like emails, podcasts, texting, phone calls, videos (at a push), so hopefully the transition won't be too bumpy.

I made the switch, the other way around. After my Nokia E61i (loved that phone) died, I got an HTC One V when it was brand new. Unfortunately, long term negative reviews hadn't started coming out. I gave up on it after a year of suffering and got a second hand iPhone 4s 16gb. I've had it for two years now. It is dependable, predictable, and running iOS 8. My main computer is a Macbook Pro (yes, you could say I live in the walled garden now) and I like the way my iPhone effortlessly synchronises calendar, contacts, notes, music, and lots of other things with it. Sure the battery life occasionally runs short late in the afternoon, but its nothing a small cheap power bank in my backpack can't solve, which by the way my friends with other phones sometimes borrow. It doesn't have expandable memory too. But in my experience with my HTC and my daughter's Lenovo p700, expandable memory was unreliable for both files and apps even when it was nowhere near full. So I'm basically set with my 4s and will use it until it dies, which by that time the iPhone 8 will probably be the current model.

Did someone say Nokia? I have the Lumia 925 (WP 8.1). The best part is the anti-theft property. My gym locker was broken into, the guy took my sunglasses but left my phone untouched. LOL.

Well I've ordered the s4mini, was £150 brand new with 3 years warranty, so pretty good.

Also I noticed android L 5.0 version is going to soon be released for it and basically it looks like a much nicer operating system than the older one. We'll see..

If you buy a newer model of the iPhone it will be anything but slow.
Love my personal 6+.

But at work we're nuking our BB's for Windows 8 Phones. I got one of the first to do testing. It's the HTC One. I'm very impressed. Solid feel; good UI; (so far) great battery. If the iPhone 6+ didn't exist I'd be very happy with it.

I don't understand, why don't people just buy cheap $50 phones? They do everything a phone was designed to do.

Thinking of heading back to the future myself - only using my smarty-pants phone for talking & texting, but not much else.

A little while back, I was reading about all the lawsuits that Samsung has going on. It seems that their business model through recent years has been to copy iPhone ideas/features in their own phones and sell them for less dough. Rake in the profits while the cases are tied up in court. My phone isn't from either company, but this story left me feeling rather leery of Samsung.

I use a Trac Phone, and just need it as a portable phone (when I opt to carry it).

There are certainly pluses to these kinds of advanced phones. But I see people sitting side by side fiddling buttons instead of chatting and joking around. I see people nervously ensuring a constant 24/7 connection with the damn things.

I just don't need the hassle. . . let alone the constant self-provided technical support they require.

For the OP: love Apple computers since the Very Day One when they came out. Can't beat'em. Meant to be used.

Stick with a new iPhone. The other android/galaxy ones are cr@p. I've owned the others and my family has some of the others and they are nothing compared to the iPhone. Great analogy by eelhc. I've never had issues with an iPhone. The other ones I am constantly going in to the phone store to have them try and get something to work or undo something that just stays there for no reason. I don't have the patience to keep going in and out of the phone store to have them look at something that needs corrected. A big waste of time. Again, stick with a new iPhone model.

With any technology it has to be used the right way... Banned from dinner tables and such...

BTW... consider that texting to communicate with someone is much more considerate than actually calling someone. Not so easy to text on a trac phone (unless it's a feature phone).

That's interesting. I have a co-worker who went from the iPhone to the Windows phone and is happy with it. I'll have to check it out at some point.

Depends on what you find most important:

Simplicity: iPhone
Screen size: Galaxy
Camera: Nokia
Battery life: Razr Maxx

I have a Razr Maxx HD

First thing to do is verify all the apps you need are there. I just did a quick review - American Airlines just pulled their app from Windows 8 - everything else is there. Except the apps I created - since I only develop for iOS. :)

Apple is overpriced crap. Two reasons why I'll never even consider buying their stuff:
1) Internal battery
2) iTunes

Internal battery is RIDICULOUS! I'm a heavy user of smart phones. I go through batteries about one a year. If I were to buy Apple, I would be forced to get my phone to a phone service center, wait for two weeks, pay $100-200, everything that poor stuff EVERY YEAR. NO, I'll never consider that.

Then the iTunes. How can it be so hard to give me an ability to drag-and-drop files between my phone and the computer? And is iTunes even available on Linux?? NO, I will not buy a phone without drag-and-drop memory access.

Apple is overpriced crap for people who never even use their phone!

Well, items have various values to different people so something that doesn't have value to you may have value to others.

I believe that I can just bring my iPhone to my local store and they'll swap it out in about 30 minutes. We had a recall last year on the iPhone 5 batteries and you just left it with them and came back a little while later and it was done. I'd just get a Mophie if I needed more power. The Apple Store will give you a loaner if they need it overnight or longer.

I actually like iTunes because it's my backup (and I have a backup of the backup) and it's easy to keep all of my iOS devices synced.

Drag n Drop would be nice but it's clear that Apple isn't going to support that anytime soon.

I upgraded an old Nexus 7 to Lollipop this morning. It's actually quite nice. The biggest pain was that I had to wipe the device because I changed my Google password on another system and there's no way to update it on the Nexus 7. You wipe the device and set it up all over again.
