15 Records Federer will likely break in the next year or two

zonalteam

Rookie
1. Most consecutive grandslam appearances: Federer has 52 consecutive, and is number 3 on the list behind Edberg who has 54, and Ferreira who leads with 56 consecutive grand slam appearances.

2. Total match wins at the French Open: Federer has 54 and is second place behind Vilas, who has 58 total French open wins. Although Nadal is only two match wins behind Federer at 52 wins, even if he wins the French Open next year Federer can take the top place if he reaches the final, or surpass Vilas and be tied with Nadal for most wins, if he loses in the Semis. This is assuming Nadal is healthy and even plays the French, of course. If Nadal retires early due to his recent knee complications, Federer could even hold this record over Nadal for good.

3. Most consecutive years appearing in at least one Grand Slam singles Final: At the moment Federer has reached at least one slam final for 10 straight years, and is number 3 on this list behind Lendl and Sampras who have 11 years with at least one grand slam final. Roger would only need two more decent years to break this record. Unless Lendl is inspired by his pupil, Andy Murray, and trains during the offseason only to lose a couple more slam finals.

4. Total match wins at Year End Championship: Federer and Lendl both share the top spot with 39 wins. Roger will obviously break this by the end of this season.

5. Winning percentage at Year End Championship: If Federer can get to at least the finals at the Year End Championship, he will pass Illie Nastase for the highest winning percentage at the tournament. Federer trails him now by0.22 percent, for he has 84.78 percent, while Nastase has 85.00 percent.

6. Most Master series titles: Federer currently shares the top spot with Nadal at 21 titles. Unfortunately for Nadal, If Federer can win Shanghai or Paris he will break the tie and lead this important record before Nadal even has a chance to. FYI: Federer currrently is at the top of the list for most Master Series Finals reached.

7. Most weeks in top 3: Roger can break Jimmy Connors' record of 595 total weeks in the top 3 if he can stay within the top 3 for another 117 weeks. Its not going to be easy with Murray's breakthrough, but I wouldn't be surprised at if he broke this record.

8. Most years ending top 2: Federer currently shares this record with Connors. 8 times they have both ended the year either 1 or 2 in the world. Federer is almost guaranteed to break this record by the end of this season.

9. Titles on an outdoor court: Federer and Vilas both share the top spot of this record with 56 titles. Federer will most definitley break the tie and take this record for himself.

10. Consecutive years with one title: Federer shares the number 3 spot on this list with 12 years along with Becker, Edberg and Andy Roddick, but will most likely win a title each year he plays, so therefore if he plays for at least 2 more full seasons and enough of a third season to win a title, he will take the top spot of this particular record.

11. Most hard court Grand Slam match wins: Both Federer and Agassi have accumulated 127 Grand Slam wins on hardcourts. Fed will break this record after he wins the first round at the Aussie Open.

12: First player to reach $75,000,000 in prize money: Federer has accumulated $73,691,177 and therefore will definitely break this record very soon.

13: Most ATP 500 titles: Federer shares this record with Nadal and Sampras, but can break this tie and take the record if he wins Basel, or any other ATP 500 next year like Rotterdam.

14. Most ATP 250 titles: Federer currently has 20 ATP 250 titles which is the highest among active players, unless you include Lleyton Hewitt as an active player. If he can win 7 more he will break Thomas Muster's record of 26 ATP 250 titles.

15. Most weeks at Top 2: Federer already has the most consecutive weeks at top 2, but can accumulate the most weeks total in the top 2 if he can stay there for another 18 total weeks, for that would pass Lendl at 401 weeks. Take in consideration that the 6 weeks during the offseason DO count.

Just felt like making this list, I know there are probably 20 more records/milestones that Federer can break soon, so if you know any more, please share them. This can be like a thread for the upcoming records and milstones that Federer can hopefully reach.

When you check in the "ATP world tour records" article on wiki there should only be a couple of records mentioned and at the end of the site there should be an adnotation "the remaining records have been broken by Roger Federer".

Federer will surpass McEnroe's 875 wins and Vilas 921 wins in coming weeks.

He should equal and then surpass McEnroe's 77 titles.

# of grand slam Quarter finals, currently at 38, only Connors is ahead of him with 41.

One title away from being the maximum winner in the open era at either AO, Wimby, or USO.

I'd rather he win a 2nd FO than any of the other Slams but that's extremely unlikely with Nadal (and now Djokovic, who can still be beaten of course) around.

Nothing Federer does will top this record that he already has-

Seeded #1 at THREE Olympics, and never won singles gold.

Except for maybe this upcoming record which no player has ever "accomplished"-

Losing to the same player (Rafael Nadal) in the final of the Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon and....US Open.

#6 : Nadal and Federer are too close now to determinate who has the maximum Masters 1000 titles.
Even if Federer win Shangai or Paris (hopefully both, but unlikely) and get the record this year, Nadal will add 2 or 3 more Clay titles next year and get the record back. Then Federer will win 2 hardcourt titles again, etc, etc, etc.
As Fed should retire before Nadal (unless Nadal HAD TO because of injuries, but again, it's unlikely) Nadal should end with the most Masters 1000 titles in a few years.

#14 : 7 titles is a lot, considering Federer only plays a couple of 250 per year (Doha, and Halle... that he didn't even win this year). Won't reach this record, and as he's even obviously not interesting in "that" record I can't see him play more 250 to reach it.

Us Open? Your Rafito has been lucky not having to play federer at a USO final, otherwise you'd be regretting about it.

Actually Rafa has made the final of the last 2 US Opens he's played, and Federer was the one not showing up. And if Federer did show up, he'd probably have had nothing left, after fighting off Djokovic. Talk about lucky.

In his only 2 ever U.S Open finals Nadal played by far his toughest hard court opponent- Djokovic. He would have much rather played Federer in both instead, and quite possibly would have won both if he had.

I don't think he will get the 250 record, since these are smaller tourneys and he doesn't play them often.

Astonishing though, that basically one guy will be at the top of most of these records when one day we open up an encyclopedia

You have to take in consideration though that towards the end of Rogers career when hes starts really declining, he will probably play much more 250s and inevitablly win a couple more.

Oh the Butthurt Nad fans, can't just accept that Fed has rewritten the record books.

Oh yeah I'm really upset that Rafa leads Federer 8-2 at the slams and has won their last 5 slam meetings (including 2 on hardcourt, 2 clay, 1 grass). And I'm really upset that 26-year-old Rafa already has the same number of masters shields (20) as Federer, and that Rafa already has the record 7 Roland Garros titles, over 80 straight wins on clay, and has won at least one slam per year for the last 8 years (tying the record which he will own next year).

The only thing I don't like is that Federer didn't convert matchpoints at the US Open semis the last 2 years.

Wow, it's amazing. Funny how non-Fed fans including the old-timers underrate Fed by ranking him very low on all-time greatest clay courter. I hope they're aware of this.

People call Coria a great Claycourter but don't realize that Federer has a 2-0 record on clay against peak Coria. I also read that Federer is the only player to reach the SFs or better in 5 consecutive FOs (can't attest to it though). Has lost at FO in the past 9 years only to Kuerten, Nadal, Soderling and Djokovic. 5 finals, which alone would qualify him as a Clay great. And, most significantly, the only FO winner during the reign of Nadal. Remarkable. The only reason he's underappreciated on Clay is because he's Roger Federer.

You can say that again in just about all of his achievement.

Federer is not underrated on clay by the "old timers". Most of them rank him from 10-15 all time on clay which is where he belongs (I rank him 11th). Most also ranked him 6th in the Open Era above Muster, Courier, and Bruguera which in no wa is underrating him, he certainly does not belong above any of Nadal, Borg, Lendl, Wilander, or Kuerten. Only hoodjem and Limphitter underrate him a bit. Ranking him in 2nd or 3rd all time on the surface as many Federer fans is drastically overrating him to laugahble proportions. What other player has only 1 slam on a surface who has fans that would argue they are top 3 all time and possibly the GOAT on it.

Ironically, the only people I've seen that call Federer 2nd or 3rd GOAT on Clay are Nards. Never seen a Federer fan say anything like that.

It is all relative. People may call Coria a great clay courter but meant in the sense he is one of the best seen in the last 8 years after Nadal, but nobody considers him even a top 30 clay courter of all time. The thread about the Coria vs Nadal match on clay in Rome is the first thread anyone has made about Coria since I joined the forum, so obviously there isnt all this talk today about what a great clay courter Coria was, he is pretty much forgotten.

Anyway according to Federer fans what does H2H mean. Does one need to be reminded of the Federer vs Nadal history again. Federer was a bad matchup for Coria in general, it doesnt prove indisputably he was a better clay courter at Coria's peak, at his peak (during Federer's own prime and peak) in 04-05 Coria overall achieved more on clay than Federer did. Federer had a much longer career at the top playing his best clay tennis (and on all other surfaces of course, but nobody would even compare them anywhere else).

Match-up isn't the only reason Nadal beats Federer. The more significant reason is that he's one of the greatest players of all time (2nd IMHE, by the time he's done). I couldn't beat Federer even if I were a Cataclysmic match-up for Federer. I'd need to be good, too.

Nadal lost 3 CONSECUTIVE grand slam finals to the same opponent. That's a record that will stand the test of time.

It will look funny always, because that guy is someone Rafa leads 19-14 and 6-3 at the slams. No problem there.

Djokovic will end up leading the all time series by the time it's all said and done.

Nadal has a horrible record against Novak since he matured into a great champion.

Come on, polls are worthless here. I myself voted for Federer for the lulz.

As for another arguement that you mentioned, IMO Federer is a bit underrated on clay. Just because he doesn't have the wins to back it up doesn't mean he's not up there. I mean how many other players have reached 5 FO finals and countless Masters finals? If it wasn't just Nadal who beat him all the time, you could make an arguement that he chokes in finals or just can't deliver the goods but if he loses against 1 man all-time that's not the case.

Based on what I've seen so far, I'd rank him lower than Borg, Nadal, Lendl, Wilander, Kuerten (open era) and Rosewall (both eras combined), maybe on par with Bruguera and Courier. That would put him to 6th-8th place in the open era. Of course there are some great clay courters that could well trouble Federer like Muster, Chang but they don't have the results to back it up (and it wasn't just 1 man who stopped them from reaching greatness).

LOL at Mustard voted for Muster.

There goes the neighborhood:)

Polls shouldn't be taken too seriously here. Each time one shows up I always look for the "Federer in 2" option, even if it's in a Djokovic-Nadal thread poll.

I'm a huge Fed fan, but I think at least 5 of these are in jeopardy. I wouldn't be shocked if he is out of the top 3 by the End of the French and retires by the end of next year. He has a ton of points to defend over the next 6 months and I just can't see him coming close to the brilliance he displayed post USOpen last year.
