Federer, Novak and Murray playing. After Djokovic's win at Shangai, I think the gap between #1 and #2 currently is 190 points? A tall order for Federer to finish YE #1, but winning this tournament will help.

yeah I was under the impression Djokovic wasn't playing. If the top 3 are all playing that make for a good event. If it's just Fed and Murray either Murray loses early-ish or he beats Fed in the final.

Surprised to see Murray playing Basel since Paris and London are straight afterwards. Maybe he feels he owes the tournament for pulling out last year?

Good of Novak not to play, he will be fresher for the last two tournaments of the year.

I think Murray will skip Paris, i'm not sure of course...

All 3 are playing? Wow tough competition there for a 500. It worked out just fine for Fed at Dubai though. In my opinion, whoever gets Murray in his half will get screwed (just like Shanghai and Dubai for that matter) unless Murray has an early exit.

Fed is going to win. I have tickets. Last time I had tickets for a Fed tournament he won it (WTF 2011). It's a sign.

is this next week ? and why is murray trying to rain on roger's parade by playing in this one ? he doesn't need the points does he ?

Federer to win it without facing a break point. Start of a 90 match winning streak including a set of triplets mid-June...

LOL. Considering the number of times Fed has rained on Murray's parade at Wimby and WTFs, this question shouldn't be asked :)

I think Federer has to make the quarters of Basel to remain #1 (if Djokovic isn't playing), which is a virtual lock.
So unless Djokovic screws up in Paris, there is a good chance that Federer's total weeks at number one will be 302 (or 303?) at the end of his career.

Probably not a fair comparison. Wimby and the WTF are both top tournaments that all the top players are expected to play. Basel, a mere 500, is entirely optional.

I don't think Murray is trying to cramp Federer's style. I think he just wants to stay as match-fit as possible in readiness for London.

That, and he wants to make up some of the points he'll miss out on when he withdraws from Paris. ;)

Muzza committing suicide with this hectic schedule he's inherited in the last couple of years.

Doesn't matter. Once you enter the "conversation of the elite", you have to do what it takes to stay there, yes?

(I still think they should trim that schedule. I think it's interesting that Roger finally got on that bandwagon after his Shanghai loss, when Rafa's been saying it for years.)

what did roger say? funny he's always just been clever in scheduling, i guess now he's older plus having to play a fair bit to be number one, he's disagreeing with his younger self.

Come on Andy, make up for your unusual lack of success in Asia by kicking ass in Basel. You can win this, let's do it!!!

Federer will say whatever fits his mood or whatever benefits his character.

What did Roger say? Cutting schedule does not benefit him since he has no mandatory events anymore after this year, right?

Murray only has 180 points to defend at Paris so if he does well in Basel, then tank early in Paris and prepare early for WTF with Lendl. Hopefully, Ivan will get the killer instinct back into Andy's game as far as finishing matches at match point is concerned.

11 people have failed in this poll already. Murray is officially out. Withdrew due to back pain (really? More like saving energy for Paris and WTF)

Unlikely to be seeing Andy Murray in Basle next week my Swiss friends tell me. Would not be an unexpected decision.

Seeds should be:

1. Roger Federer
2. Juan Martin Del Potro
3. Richard Gasquet
4. Stanislas Wawrinka
5. Florain Mayer
6. Andreas Seppi
7. Mikhail Youzhny
8. Jeremy Chardy

Looks like we might have Fed-Delpo #7 this year.

ill tell you whats sad - this kind of posts

only murray can own federer despite trailing him 0-3 in majors and 1-9 in sets, what a player

If you want to talk about sets then Roger has lost the last 5 against Murray without making 5 games.

Just saying.

Murray does own Federer in best of 3 matches though and that is what this event is, so in relevance in talking about what is most likely to happen here it makes sense to favor Murray.

Fed should win this now. Although I'd still have picked him over Murray in Basel.

When is the draw out?

Right. Next title, he can surpass Mac. Then what does he do about Connors? He would have to win 32 more titles.

That's a lot.

But he's said he wanted to play till 2016, and you know he does do things like pull a WC in Rotterdam and show up 2 days before to win. It's not like it's 32 Slam titles. So maybe he could do it.
