Monfis drinking Coke during change over

When a fat guy drinks coke there's a problem. No so with Monfils, especially in the middle of a 4 hour tennis match. I highly doubt he needs to bother about the nutritional value or fear of getting fat.

I would love to see someone crack open a beer (didn't murray take a sipof someone's beer once though?)

I always used to kind of dislike Monfils for his dancing and his 20 falls during a match and making more drama over it than a premier league football player... but my lord did he play some good tennis in that Simon match. I realise I quite like his game. The French - artistic but inconsistant.

I dunno what this guy keeps going on about...Many professionnal cycling teams actually bring coke along with their water bottles and other drinks. Here's an old report on cyclists drinking coke during the race.

Basically, it's not as big a deal as you're making it out to be. You're ranting on like Monfils was sitting on the couch pigging out on coke and pork rinds or something

Full of sugar, caffeine and better tasting than Gatorade! What are you people? Nutritionists? Who cares. Finally I guy who doesn't dump funny, blob of some kind of mixtures into his mouth and tries to hide behind a towel!

Wasn't there a player at the turn of the century who would drink champagne during changeovers?

Different world...everyone did that.

And Lendl started obliterating both Connors and McEnroe, who were not fitness freaks, when he got his act together. Need to stay in proper shape for this level of tennis now.

Becker drank coca-cola pretty regularly. He even advertised it. He also beat Lendl 5 times out of 6 matches in the majors :)

I remember Sampras drinking Coke at the US Open against Corretja, in 1996 I think it was. It seemed to help him back after throwing up towards the end :)

Coke has alot of sugar, which acts fast to provide energy for a period. With the heat and the match nearing a conclusion, it served a purpose. I know people who drink Coke after hitting the gym, some even go for Pop Tarts instead. Quick acting carbs to get the glycogen opening up the muscles for nutrients is never a bad thing in those circumstances.

You shouldn't being drinking Coke. You should be drinking Brawndo. It has electrolytes. electrolytes is what your body craves

What a funny guy, he drinks coke because sports drinks are too mainstream :)

He is definitely unique, I watched him practice last week and I don't think he even whacked a ball most of the time, he spent most of the time bouncing the ball on the rim of the racket and doing tricks, then his mate came over and they spent some time playing lawn bowls with tennis balls.

Lay off the name calling.

You are not going to justify this whatsoever. That kind of garbage for high level athletes to be at their best is wrong...period.

And let's get back to tennis. What do Federer, Djokovic, and Ferrer have on changeovers?

Or Murray, or Nadal?

Whatever beverage they're endorsing, of course.

He's a professional athlete, I'm sure he knows what he is doing. He has a number of people and trainers watching after him to make sure he is ok. I doubt after the time he took off last year, the trainers would allow him to drink or eat anything that would hamper his performance during a match.

So is this entire thread based on the unsubstantiated thought that drinking a coke during a match must be a bad thing??

it would be awesome if he decided to have a cheese burger during a changeover and went on to win the match.

i can only imagine the ensuing threads on this forum...

Is this real coke or is this special coke made by the company's Pro Shop? Or is this just a can painted to look like coke?

If he drank Coke throughout the match, that is bad for him. If he just had a can or two, especially in the fifth, I completely understand. It's not much different than eating an energy bar, plus Coke is pretty good for settling an upset stomach.

maybe the man just had a craving and wanted a coke?

can't it ever be that simple?

I remember some quote about Pete wanting to eat a pizza the night before his RG semi with Kafelnikov. He stuck to his rigid diet and had no energy the next day. In hindsight, I think he feels his body craved that pizza for a reason.

doesn't water have electrolytes in it

I drink coke (flatish) and water when I play tennis, along with the odd banana

Me too, but usually only in the summer and near the end of the match when energy is getting low. I am usually dehydrated by then anyway, but I find the sugar/caffeine boost helps.

I'm drinking a Mexican Coke right now. It has real sugar in it not fructose. Tastes a bit better & smoother.
