Nadal: Give me more time, Don't Judge me!

I don't think that has anything to do with any press reviews. It's from the press conference after the match.

Some quotes:

"The knee is still bothering me, but you have to face adversity with the best possible face and look forward to keep working and enjoy what I like the most, to play tennis"

"A week ago we didn't know how the body would respond"

"At least now I know we can compete at a certain level. I think that was a positive week"

"I will try to keep improving my physical sensations day by day, which is the most important thing because I don't feel that my tennis level is bad. I need more time on court."

"I was two points away from winning the title, but I said from first day that the result was not the most important thing, although I would've liked to win"

"To win four matches in a row is good news for me."

It's not really important but he didn't win 4 matches in a row. He won 3 or 6 depending if one counts the doubles. I sure hope Rafa doesn't pay attention to the media in general, they're always after sensationalism.

Lol, true. I guess he wasn't counting, or someone messed up the translation.

Nadal and the *******s are going to use the knee excuse forever and ever and ever....
No such thing as accepting your defeat with class. But then again, most of these tennis players never even went past 5th grade by the looks of it. Most of them are kids, mentally. Just whining and moaning all the time the way kids generally do. Kids in adult bodies who can play tennis very well.:)

It's silly to expect him to immediately start playing at his top level after an absence of nearly 8 months off the tour. He did really well to make the final without dropping a set and he only narrowly lost it (he was a set and a break up and, at one stage, was just 2 points away from winning it). Zeballos was playing really well and was able to exploit Nadal's rusty movement. Kudos to him.

It's going to take more than a handful of matches at a small tournament like Vina del Mar before Nadal starts to play himself into any kind of form after such a long absence. Let's wait and see how he does in the rest of his Latin American swing!

Well, he says his knee still hurts.

So playing pro tennis is going to make it better or worse?

If it gets worse how is he supposed to get better by playing more?

It's either just some pain from adjusting to the higher demand on it, or he figured he just couldn't keep waiting if he wanted to have chances for RG so he considers it to be well enough to play and not get too bad again. I hope if this is the case he doesn't play IW and Miami.

Excuse me, if he still had pain from his tendon tear/tendinitis no doctor on earth would tell him to go play professional tennis. Tendinitis is a overuse injury, you don't treat it with more activities which contribute to overuse. Use some common sense.

He's made it quite clear that it's improved enough so that there's no risk of a tear.

If he didn't play whenever he has any pain from tendinitis he would never play.

So it has not fully healed and the treatment is to play singles and doubles in multiple tournaments?

Yeah, that tactic isn't exactly dripping with logic is it? I tell you, watching the dismantling of this cheater is gonna be EPIC, and I can't wait to see it...

I think he did well reaching the final in his comeback. The knee is something that has bothered him for years, to be out because of it for 7 months is a big deal. To come back and not be worrying about it in the back of his mind straight away is too much to ask, in my opinion.

He played pretty solidly and got to know where his body is at in terms of match fitness, i'd say it was a worthwhile week.

Yup. He'll play the clay season then probably "disappear" again for the rest of the season. Clay tournies are all that's left for him. The clay season has become so boring because of him. People just watch to see if there's an upset.

I am just amazed how some of you guys still dont get it.

So casual....oh yeah, well 7 months away, he will be back to normal....

This guy is not super human, Hello? There is a limit for anything human, pain, patience, knee, endurance, tendons, nerves...etc etc..

For how long someone can play trough pain? How many years? have you guys heard of something called "Burnt" or "Spent"??

Can you guys look at history and look at those with 3 or more RG titles and see what they did past their 27th birth date?

Nadal will do worse the more he plays, period.

Oh, I'm not talking about a PUBLIC ban for BP, I'm talking about getting dismantled ON COURT. He may rack up in some rinky dink dirt tournaments, though the most recent attempt to do that didn't turn out all that well, but I don't see him winning RG, let alone any other majors...

All those adjectives while they do apply to a degree don't override the fact that Ralph's moonballing is something 90% of the tour can't handle apart from Djokovic 2.0 and maybe Lendilised Murray(still to be seen).

Nadal's game is risk-free,with a lot of margin, he just waits and waits for an error and on these slow surfaces he gets them more often than not, so he eventually wins even if he plays subpar. This is why he's almost unbeatable on clay, especially with the quality of clay courters of this generation.

Well, apparently it was healed in December, remember? Nadal was gonna play the Aus Open if it wasn't for the flu. The knee wasn't a problem at all then...

But some more rest and healing time means it has become a problem now.

He's unbeatable-- He is, or he was?

The story you are saying is old. We have heard it before, does not apply anymore. He does not have the knees to run down every ball and wait for errors. Now in longer rallies, he is the one who fails.

The sings were there, before his wimbledon exit. " I get tired of competition" ..." I had less passion for tennis" ...that was 2011

BTW, you cant win big titles by beating 90% of the tour. Wozi will tell you that.

He is in state of denial right now. His career has stalled. We may see flashes of his great days, maybe even some masters cups, but that's abut it. It's beginning of the end for him.

I wouldn't read too much into Vina del Mar, prefer to wait till after RG.
Besides you were saying the same thing in 2012 but Ralph went unbeaten on red clay that season.

He played through pain and injury apparently, and paid dearly for it.

Now for next 4 months he has a bunch of points to defend, his ranking may still fall. It's much harder to repeat his 2012 season.

Lol, what, watching bandy legged retrievers "construct" a point doesn't do it for you? I hated playing on it, too, felt like I was on roller skates if I hit an approach, and, as such, practically had to hit a winner on an approach shot-and, last but not least, the lovely red clay caking my socks.

From Toni and Nadal's comments I gather that they expect it to away by the end of February - courtesy of three clay tournaments, including doubles in at least two of them.
If you don't see the casual relationship between playing a lot and the pain going away, I don't blame you.
One would assume that either it's not there now, or that will be worse by the end of the month after playing three tournaments.

Good post.

Players that won 3 or more RGs in the open era:

Rafael Nadal 7 2005 2012
Björn Borg 6 1974 1981
Ivan Lendl 3 1984 1987
Mats Wilander 3 1982 1988
Gustavo Kuerten 3 1997 2001

Wilander won his last RG at age 23 - 24th birthday in August.
Kuerten won his last RG at age 24 - 25th birthday in September.
Borg won his last RG at age 25 - one day after turning 25.
Nadal won his last(?) RG at age 26 - eight days after 26th birthday.
Lendl is the only one who won RG past his 27th birthday in 1987. His 27th birthday was in March of that year. He won his last RG title 3 months after turning 27.

Good article from the BBC talking about Rafa's type of injury. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/tennis/21309064

"If you have a basic tendinopathy, when a few fibres are damaged, you're still looking at a three- to six-month recovery, because the cells within the tendon are very, very slow at regenerating.

"The secret is to do a progressive loading programme on the tendon to stimulate those cells to the new load.

"You want a relatively short period of rest, and then you need to reload it within the tendon's tolerance.

"That's what can go wrong with athletes - they don't give enough time and sufficient progressive loading stimulus to these cells to allow them to lay down new tissue, which can get stronger and reform the rope.

"That's why it takes a long time."

"The nature of that injury means an athlete is likely to get some pain when they load the knee at competition levels, but I'd be concerned if they were still feeling pain and hadn't done a significant amount of sport-oriented loading in advance.

"The tendon is load-intolerant now, so in a Slam-type tournament over two weeks solid there will be a consequence of that."

So Rafa is doing his "competition loading" now. Hopefully, his knee will feel better soon.

Sigh. The knee was a problem. He had said then he was going to play Abu Dhabi and according to how he felt see about the Doha and the AO.

You just don't know what you're talking about.

But was it the flu or not that caused him to skip? As far as I can tell, his knee was fine enough to play Australia. What am I missing? Notice the word "Therefore"

"My knee is much better and the rehabilitation process has gone well, as predicted by the doctors, but this virus didn't allow me to practise this past week," Nadal said in a statement.
"Therefore I am sorry to announce that I will not play in Doha and the Australian Open, as we had initially scheduled.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/tennis/20859522

But Nadal’s uncle and coach, Toni Nadal, said the issue was proper preparation after such a long break.

With Nadal unable to play next week and unwilling to wear himself out by playing a tournament the week before the Australian Open, he would have made his return to competition in a distant, best-of-five-set Grand Slam tournament known for its brutal summer temperatures. Last January, he lost in the final to Novak Djokovic in a match that lasted nearly six hours.

“It is simply not conceivable that his first event is a best-of-five-sets event; he wouldn’t be ready for that,” Toni Nadal said in a statement. “It is true we have been quite unlucky with this, but there is nothing we can do.”

The concern is whether there is more to Nadal’s problems. In an interview with The Times of London last week in Majorca, Nadal acknowledged that the “knee is still not perfect.”

“The doctors say that the images are very good, so that is a big calm for me, but I still feel something,” he said. “I need to be careful. I need to be focused on how the knee is getting better or worse every day and don’t make a mistake that can be negative for my future. Not yet do I have the feeling that I am 100 percent ready to compete, to say, ‘I’m going to go there, I will be ready to run for every ball, to play aggressive, to do what I want with my legs and then try to play my best tennis to win.’ ”

But Pérez-Barbadillo said the virus, not the knee, was the decisive factor in his January withdrawals.

“We’re not lying to people; we never lie to people; it’s not our style,” he said. “His knees are doing well, but he’s got this thing and this thing has stopped him from practice, from getting everything on track.”

Are we all still confused about the statements made by Nadal & co?

It's quite apparent that only his fans can make sense of what his team says.

Very much like religious apologists, they pick and choose what to believe. Anyone questioning the logic of said statements are labeled "haters" or "non-believers". The similarities are uncanny.

This guy is too much. I suppose he wants an all-clay ATP season. Haven't they done enough for the whiner by slowing down all the courts? Whose fault is it that he can't finish a point in under 30 shots?

And he thinks by allowing more time in between points it will help his fragile knees?

''People like to see great rallies, long matches, and for that to happen, the 25 seconds are not enough,'' he said. ''If the ATP wants a sport which is faster but doesn't take into consideration a lot of strategy or great rallies, then it's right doing this. I think the players in the locker rooms are not very happy with that rule.'' Really Rafffffaa?

He already takes about 40 seconds on average!

I hope he goes out in the first round in Sao Paulo. :)

He'll never do what's right to keep himself injury free. He is again playing doubles in Brasil, even though he doesn't need to. I have been a fan of this guy for 8 years now and he has always been a bonehead when it comes to taking care of his body with decent scheduling so he doesn't overplay. It's part of the reason his career is over already at just 26 years old.

Millions and millions of fans are waiting just to see Rafa on court. Even in Chile he was treated like a very special person. I don't care if he doesn't win the next 3 matches as long as I can download his tournaments. Many of us have missed him a great deal. His eccentricities also. His presence when he walks on court reminds me so much of Borg and like many of his fans we all wish him well and back to being Rafa, one of the greatest tennis players of all time
