Now tbh I didn't see the match so I'm not sure how accurate this is, but it seems he had to move up the gears because he couldn't possibly drop any.

Looks like he was in the negative gears in the first set there.

You are right. He played absolutely terrible in the first set. Jaziri hit a nice shot here and there but he did really look like a #128 out there. Federer just somehow managed to play even below that level.

It's strange.. Since the #1 ranking is kinda out of reach (and I don't think Federer is really going for it either), I don't really care what he does in the smaller events anymore. When the Grand Slams start, I'm 100,0% behind Federer, because I know he really wants to win them. But .. the 500 tournaments only really matter for the points (and prize money), I personally don't care how many 500 titles he wins, it just makes his total "Titles won" count look a little better.

Potentially cool matches tomorrow:
  • Del Potro Vs. Baghdatis: I expect DelPo to win, but think it will be competitive.
  • Tsonga Vs. Llodra: All courter Vs. Serve and Volley-er on a fast(ish) court. Both French. Will have the shot of the day for sure. I want Llodra to take it, but if Tsonga does we could see a rematch between him and Berdych after he beat Tomas in the final in Marseille.

Djokovic is also playing Triocki i think. Don't expect much from that match to be honest.

Who is Triocki?

Watching the Fed vs Jazz match almost made me think for a minute that I may be able to take a set off Fed as well ;-), jk.
I have to really doubt whether Fed is able to get himself motivated at all in most of the tournaments at this point. He's been there, done all of that. On the other hand, if I remember correctly, Djoko has dropped a set in earlier rounds as well to virtual unknowns. Where exactly does Fed's form stand :?

I havent said this before, but I genuinely think Fed is done.

Motivation is less, poor showings in Melbourne and Rotterdam, no training to get better in between, after Rotterdam again going to Africa. The exhibitions in South America. I just think he doesnt have it anymore. He'll be alright and Wimbledon, though not special. I think it'll be more and more losses from here on.

If you read his interviews he says he's intending to put in a solid 4-5 weeks practice after IW which is more than he's done in ages.

Agree he's phoning it in at the moment, but he does have a plan. Whether it helps or not (or how much) is a different question.

he might be aiming to peak from rome ( last CC masters ) to USO ( & then maybe the YEC ) .... we'll see ....

I don't think he had a poor showing at melbourne .. he had a decent tournament there .... played well in the first 4 matches, did well to fend off a zoning tsonga in the QF... and then after that 5-set battle, fought and stretched a zoning murray to 5 ( though his actual play in the SF could've been a lot better )

I'd wait until Wimbledon before ringing the death knell; like others have said, he has some kind of plan which I believe will be geared towards strong performance at the Slams. I think he's really hungry for another French, more than anything else.

Davydenko lead Tipsarevic 5-0 at the moment. Does someone watch this match and could tell us something about it. I would love to see Davydenko coming back.

Tipsy is having a dreadful year, so probably a combination of that and Davy on a mini-comeback.

I see Tomic retired to Hanescu after just 5 games. Anyone know anything?

Yeah, aTomic goes subaTomic with a retirement @2-3, on serve???

As to Fed, I'll quote Twain...the reports of my demise are greatly exaggerated...he dropped sets last year all over the place in route to a couple of 500 & a MS1000 titles. When are all of you "experts" gonna realize the guy is human and can be off for an hour without it meaning anything more than that??? When the jets get going, the only thing you can post is he's finished??? A win is all he's looking for and sometimes it's better to struggle early so you get a few more balls to play. A 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 line isn't too tragic!

I agree with this, but the Fed of 2006 would have never dropped a set to Malek Jaziri on any surface.

no idea what happened tomic... trying to find details. doesn't seem injury related, but I wasn't watching that match. i was looking forward to seeing him getting out-played by Davydenko.

Delpo and Baghdatis warming up now.. Should be fun.

Marcos Baghdatis takes the first set 6-4... Well done.

Delpo making a lot more service mistakes than last week. He needs to adjust to playing outdoors.

He decided to take February off to concentrate on getting as fit as possible for IW and Miami (given he's had disappointing results at both in the last 3 years, especially at IW).

How can not playing help in that endeavour? He's going to bomb out in the 2nd round from lack of match play.

Yeah Delpo will probably lose since he was the only real threat to Djoko before the final.

Would you think serve and volley could work well on these fast courts? I was wondering if Llodra had a chance against Tsonga later?

Wow... Delpo must be worried... he was on pushing mode the past rally (longest of the match?).

I think he needs to move in more, hit angles and maybe try to finish at the net. Trying to hit the corners from behind the baseline will result in too many errors and pushing won't work, he can't out-grind Baghy...

Match running way from him now...

Juan-Martin breaks back... He's mixing it up nicely from the baseline now, not pushing or going for broke... variety of spin, pace and angles.

Deuce again... Marcos hits it into the net... Delpo serves and holds...

Juan Martin did well to stay in the match. Impressive.
