I was on the court next to a 16 yo junior tournie final yesterday

I was hitting on the next court at my indoor club.

Kids could hit the ball.

I'm assuming this was under-16 since both of these kids looked to be about 13 and barely into puberty.

That had to have a tournament official come down because they were fighting over line calls.

One kid was a major d-bag, yelling "come on" after all of his opponents misses...needed a good face punching.

Hahaha my doubles partner got in a bit of a tiff at a tournament this weekend with a junior during a singles match. They were both pretty pumped up and the 'come ons' were pretty loud from both sides. The kid started to give death looks every time my partner yelled. It was weird, because they were both doing it.

I could feel the tension between these 2 kids when I was watching. The one kid goes and gets an official because he thinks the other kid (the d-bag) hooked him on a serve.

The ball was at least 6 inches deep, and he was getting beaten pretty badly, but he's all "are you serious about that? are you sure?"

I'm still amazed that high level tennis play relies on the honor system. You'd never see a high school basketball game be self officiated.

That's a good point. The only other high school sport played without refs I can think of is golf, if you can call that a sport. Do NCAA division 1 matches have officials watching each match? I know that when I played D2 decades ago we didn't, and that was the only sport at my school without officials.

My club hosts a holiday break junior tournament, and at least for the finals for each age group they had an official for each match. They might have had them at earlier rounds, but I can't say for sure.

I watched two small colleges play last year. There were loud "come ons" after almost every point for every match. I was playing a doubles league match and wanted to tell them to cool it because they were distracting me.

Like a New Yorker? :) Ironic that he wants to punish bad behavior with more bad behavior.

Tennis is a great game; unfortunately there is more of this type of behavior than back in the day. And the worst part is the Denial - my friend and I asked a woman on the next court who would berate herself and opponent every few minutes in a loud voice if she could keep it down a little - she responds in Victim Mode "I guess I can't play here anymore!" Sad.

Speak for yourself, what's with this "WE" stuff???--or are you using the royal "we" because you're descended from monarchy? Personally I think there's a lot of punks out there who should be smacked but we're living in a tyranny of the children momentarily and if you exercise your "it takes a village" approach and give 'em a good smacking you'll end up in jail. Even parents can't smack their own rug-rats for fear of them snitching to the social police. Too bad, they'll have a hard landing someday when they mouth off to the wrong person or this ship of fools kulture we're in rights itself.

The top teams, such as UVA, Stanford, USC, etc. have a chair umpire for each court. As you move down Division 1, you go from chairs on each court, to multiple roving umpires, to one roving umpire, to no umpires.

Yes. Maybe not a punch per se, but a good hard slap at least.

This behavior is sickening. Parents should be embarassed. If my kid did any of this B.S. stuff ("come ons", hooking, head games) , his competitive tennis career would be over real fast. After I slapped him first.

P.S. I am willing to volunteer as the slapper for any junior tourneys. Or face puncher if that is your preference.

I'm with you in spirit. I don't believe in hitting kids but I would definitely not allow my kids to behave the same way I have seen from these juniors. I played a few and witnessed a couple of matches and would be embarrassed if my kids behaved that way.

Come on is just pumping yourself up. I say it when I play a really good point or hit an ace sometimes. I agree it can get a bit excessive but really? Kids deserve to be hit for saying come on?

Sure, it may pump you up. But 13 seems a bit young to be beating your opponents psychologically as well.

Something similar happened to me in my ALTA match last weekend (albeit on the court next to me). I was mid service motion serving for the match up 5-3 and the d-bag, self-proclaimed ex-JUCO player screams several obscenities for making a mistake...completely threw off my serve. He deserved a good punching for taking REC TENNIS so seriously. Especially in B level mixed...

Tom, considering your passive-aggressive weasel-like behavior (captured on video!) when you tried to commandeer the court from the guy who was holding it until his very large, dread-locked and not-at-all-bemused-by-your-antics friend arrived and gave you a hilarious, and very humbling, verbal (yes, verbal) beat-down, it seems that you really, really are a tough guy, but only from behind the safety of your keyboard.

I would buy the "come on" as a personal motivation technique if it wasn't SCREECHED BY SAID JUNIOR AT THE TOP OF THEIR LUNGS, sometimes in the direction of their opponent. Given what I have seen, it appears this "come on" technique is entirely to get under the skin of the opponent.

I think I was a bit harsh earlier saying that the junior should be punched. Now that I've had time to reflect, I think the parent of the offending junior should be punched and the junior should be slapped. We should always consider the root source of the behavior when meting out punishment.

Advocating hitting a child (or teenager, or adult or anyone) simply because you don't approve of their behavior is indefensible and objectively wrong, so I don't apologize for that aspect of my post.

Actually I am quite taken aback by some of the attitudes expresses here, condoning and advocating punching children in the face, quite amazing and then those same people think they have the moral right on their side. What a sad world it is.

Apology accepted sovert, and I apologize for my snide remarks to you in the "What are you thinking" thread. One must remember though, that internet message boards are highly dependent on hyperbole to make them entertaining enough to sell their sponsor's products.

Yea I don't get it I guess. If I shout come on after a point to pump myself up, who cares? Generally I am not that loud but I have definitely let out some good ones when the adrenaline is high. Now doing it on a double fault, that is classless.

I'm not sure how you look at me, but I look at you as a failure of the educational system. When someone can't realize that someone else is using hyperbole and metaphor, it is quite sad.

No one should be punching anyone, but if they were, it should have been the other kid, not me. He wasn't yelling "come on" at my misses.

If he'd have done that to me, I'd have more than enough tactics to make him reconsider his approach. Especially if I was way ahead or behind, my sole goal for the rest of the match would be to put a Penn between his eyeballs.

It's just an expression meaning he should be disciplined so he discontinues the poor behavior.

Shouting C'mon is not against the rules so he cannot be disciplined. It doesn't matter if he says it when an opponent makes a mistake or not. It may not be polite, but it cannot be disciplined unless the rules are changed. And it is not a good idea to add new rules for every guy who is ****ed off about something.

Then you cannot do anything about it. With adults, you can say something, but with juniors, you don't want to say anything because the parents could get involved. You will just come across as a big bully.

You cannot hide behind metaphor and hyperbole when calling for violence. In fact calling for violence against a person or thing is illegal and no judge will let you hide behind these kind of excuses.

I wonder, do you teach your kids to use those expression as well? I can imagine at school "I'm going to punch you in the face", school calls dad and dad replies "don't worry it is all metaphor". You think that will go well?
