Wake forest beat NC Central 6-1. Bogaerts was put at #6. What the hell? How is that even remotely allowed? Can NC Central protest this and get a win over Wake? Because they should.

Surely that's a misprint and they really had someone else playing in that spot - non conference or not you can't play your 1 at 6.

from wake forests own homepage:

Romain Bogaerts also picked up a straight-sets victory, defeating NC Central freshman Kyle Hairston by a score of 6-1, 6-0 at the sixth position.

That's just bizarre. Either it's a missprint or they got permission from their opponents to do it as they wanted all their non-starters to get better matches.

I attended the Wake-Clemson match and it was much more competitive than the 4-1 score, but probably would have ended up 5-2, as Dom Maden was serving up 3-1 vs. Adam Lee, and Nicky Kunz was up 3-0 on Dudley. They were wrong on these scores in the write-up. I got there mid-way through the dubs and court 3 for Wake was up big, and the others were very close and could have gone either way. In singles the first match off was Ho vs. Ansari. Outside of Ansari grabbing an early break, this was really a one-sided match, but Ansari was serving 4-2, 40-30 and that could have made it different. Really the same thing on court 5. Dumont and Johnson were back and forth in a really contentious match. Most of the Clemson reserves settled in on this court and were all over Dumont. 1st set could have gone either way, but the 2nd was all Johnson. That made it 2-1. Boegarts vs. Harrington was a really good match. Boegarts grabbed an early break and rode it out to 6-3. The 2nd set looked like it might swing Harrington's way but Boegarts held his serve despite some break chances for HH. In the TB, Boegarts got up 4-1 serving, and ended up having to serve at 4-5 but won the last 3 points. At that point, it was 3-1, with the other matches all late in the second. Dom Maden was up 7-6, 3-5, at 2. Kan was up 7-6, 4-5 at 3, and Dudley was up 7-6, 3-5 at 6. Lee and Alex won their 2nd sets almost simultaneously, and Dudley got it back to 5-5, before Kunz broke to win the set. However, at this point Kan had started rolling at 3. It appeared that Alex seemed to tire. His second serves were falling way short, and he didn't seem like to like having to keep grinding all of Kan's slices. Good match though.

I left before the NCCU match, but I thought it was nuts that Boegarts played at all. Same thing with Dumont. Wake has an incredibly deep team, and unless they are redshirting all of them, i have no idea why he didn't play 2 other guys.

Some here may not know that NC Central is located in Durham, NC and is a historically black university, which were common in the segregated south before African Americans were allowed to attend the other 'white only' state schools. That started to change in the late 1960's and 1970's, but many still attend these schools. Some may remember when all football and basketball players in the South, including the ACC and SEC were all white. I was at UVA in the late 60's and no blacks were allowed to attend UVA at that time, except for a very few grad students.

NCCU is one of those schools that more NC area teams now schedule to allow their backups to play. It is definitely not a tennis school and I doubt they even give tennis scholarships or at best very few.

NCCU was probably thrilled that WF would play them as they had no chance at winning.

I have no idea why Bogaerts played 5 or 6. That is strange, but in this case it made no difference in the outcome. In all likelihood not a single NCCU player could even make the WF team.

Reading earlier threads it looks as if Dumont was going to transfer to Clemson last year. He obviously didn't and ended up at Wake. That could be why the Clemson reserves were giving him some stick.

He was certainly considering Clemson. It may have even come down to Clenson or Wake. Dumont may have chose Wake to go with Bogaerts. At this point though I'm glad Clemson got Luke Johnson instead.

Thanks for your report deacbb. It certainly was closer than the score. I was following the whole time on live scoring and the first sets were incredibly close. I got home as the 3rd sets were starting and I bought the 10 dollar package to watch the match.

Augusto has been stellar for us all year, getting vital clutch wins vs South Carolina, FSU and NC State however he looked awful in that 3rd set. Was missing routine shots and seemed very slow, hit a few ghastly looking shots.

I wish they would have played it out because that was going to be a very good win for Dom Maden.

Clemson_tennis,
This is an odd request. I gather from your posts above that you bit the bullet and bought a Wake monthly all-access pass to be able to watch the Wake-Clemson match last Sunday. It doesn't appear that I can get away and head into Winston on Friday afternoon for the Wake-ND match at 4pm. Would you mind sharing your log-in info with me? Wake is reviewing this policy, and my guess is next year they won't charge for tennis, since not many, if any, other schools do. I'll gladly share my email with you if you have no issues with this. Thanks in advance.

Thanks Clemson. I greatly appreciate it. I'm still holding out hope that I could make it by the time singles start, but my wife is not in support of that on a Friday night and we live about an hour away.

My email is louisvilledeac AT yahoo.com. Thanks again and I hope I can return the favor sometime.

Florida State

Most impressive result: 4-3 win over Wake Forest to back up the win over NC State.

Most discouraging result: 5-2 loss at Clemson. The match seemed to be in FSU's hands but blew the lead on two courts and got the loss despite two easy wins on courts 4 and 6.

Most surprising player: Cristian Gonzalez-Mendez. He has really had a good year so far. Up to #65 in the rankings and could really be playing #1 for the Noles right now. Has a solid amount of good wins.

Most disappointing player: No player really stands out as being too disappointing. I could say Nunez but he has had a mix of decent results and bad ones. The biggest disappointment has been the fact that Ben Lock cannot play. If he was healthy right now, he could be in at 3 or so, drop Blake Davis to #4, Nunez out entirely and keep Rinaldi and Goldin in at 5 and 6. That's a salty team.

Expectation for the rest of the season: With the big rankings jump last week the expectations have been upped. Now they can look to pull and upset and make the round of 16 when before simply making the tournament may have been the goal.

Key to achieving expectation: CGM needs to continue his strong play, that has been the single biggest boost to the Noles this season. Another key is Cotrone getting ins at #1. He cannot get beat consistently at 1. Recently he has grabbed a few wins and that is key.

NC State

Most impressive result: Not a lot to choose from. 4-3 win over South Carolina has to be the selection.

Most discouraging result: East to go with the loss to Miami, but it seems like Miami has on a roll that weekend and might have just ran into a buzzsaw so I will go with the loss at Northwestern. At the time this was a Northwestern team that had been struggling but beat NC State. That was the beginning of the slide for the Pack.

Most surprising player: Austin Powell has become a solid #1 player which is very surprising considering where his game was two seasons ago where he was a mediocre #4.

Most disappointing player: Nick Horton has struggled mightily in his young college career. He was supposed to be one of the top freshman in the nation and instead has barely won a match. His addition was what led me to believe that NC State was going to be a better team this year.

Expectation for rest of the season: Make the NCAA tournament, pull an upset or two.

Key to achieving expectation: Thomas Weigel needs to put in more consistent results. He slips in and out of the line-up, sometimes giving a good result and other times producing a howler. Also NC State has always been a strong doubles team and in the close matches they need to continue to get that point.

Virginia Tech

Most impressive result: 4-3 win over Tulsa. To this point the only win worth anything for the Hokies.

Most discouraging result: 4-3 loss to Boise State. Big chance to get a high ranked win and boost their own ranking, but could not get the job done. Massive opportunity lost.

Most surprising player: Amerigo Contini. He is now a top 20 national player. This isn't a huge surprise though considering I saw him play last year and thought he definitely had the potential to jump up in to the higher ranks of the college game with his versatile forehand.

Most disappointing player: VT has no really weak spot. Each player is about what you expect. The only area that has been disappointing is doubles. It is a week area for the Hokies.

Expectation for the rest of the season: Make the NCAA tournament.

Key to achieving expectation: Getting the doubles point more often, Bjerrehus becoming a solid #2 as he was last year. He has fallen off just a tad from a year ago and he needs to get back to 2013 form. Nicoud has developed into a pretty solid #6.

Still waiting for the rest of the ACC teams!

late but not too late update..Clemson vs UVA is just starting !!!

1. Virginia, easily kicking out Miami and FSU, have still two nice games ahead in ACC, at Clemson today and later vs Wake Forest, but should easily end no-1 in acc at the end

2. Duke - allways had duke ahead of Notre Dame, and they showed it to me last weekend, thanks. Florida trip coming up. Still has the WF and UNC trips ahead..interesting.

3. North Carolina - great win at Notre Dame, still fighting for Top10 place in ITA, games with Duke and WF still ahead. Also on Florida trip this weekend.

4. Notre Dame , two deciding losses vs Duke & UNC, both at home, ill ask, are they even Top 16 ??? should take care of WF and NC State this weekend, if they do, they are...!

5. Clemson- . cannot beat the Top teams, thats their problem, Wake Forest loss hurts

6. Florida State -lost to both Virginias, comical team..losing to Vtech, but beating Wake Forest before, also lost to Clemson.

7. Wake Forest - another comical team....after losing to FSU and so on, they go on and beat Clemson, Wake has the worse losses compared to FSU and Clemson..so i leave them on 7, also i feel these 3 teams can beat each other on any given day, Notre Dame and a BC/ GWU doubleheader ahead (funny they play BC first and the better team GWU after it)

8. Virginia Tech - Vtech easily beat Miami, also beat FSU, jumps from 10 to 8 after both good wins, nice game at Clemson on Sunday !

9. NC State - ended their 5 game losing trip with a win over Gtech, very good early season but tough 2nd half then with lots of good opponents, but should reach NCAAs.

10. Miami ,no chance vs both Virginias, interesting weekend vs Duke and UNC.

11. Georgia Tech - no one to beat anymore, had no chance at fading NC State, have their lonely conference-win over Boston, maybe they can surprise Vtech today, but i doubt it

12. Boston College - nothing to write anymore....it is not worth the research...also i like their players to play every match also they know they ll lose it....

Mitchell Frank not playing today for UVa vs. Clemson. He needs to get healthy for UVa to compete for the NCAA title. Even today's match and the ACC tournament are iffy if he does not play.

It appears that UVa's problem was illness, not injury, which is good news (easier recovery than injury). Bad news is that "several" guys are sick. Don't know who or how many, but the UVa post-match story talks about throwing together doubles teams this morning before the match. Considering that Mac Styslinger is a very good doubles player, he has played big matches with Thai Kwiatkowski, and we threw Thai together with Jordan Daigle at the last minute, I have to think that Mac is one of the sick. Perhaps Mac and Mitchell are the only two, but Coach Boland says in the story that he did not know who would play singles until he talked to the players after doubles. That makes me wonder if someone was not quite 100% and played singles anyway. Very scary stuff against a top 20 caliber team on the road. The UVa winning streak probably should have ended today. We escaped by the skin of our teeth.

3rd set tiebreak on 6 to decide wake vs ND

2-0 Kunz
2-1 Kunz. Kunz misses a backhand he attempted to go down the line with long.
3-1 kunz. ND is at the net and has a chance for 3 putaways but off screen Kunz hits a sick pass
3-2 Kunz. ND approaches the net and Kunz misses the pass long.
3-3. Horrible double fault from Kunz. Looking really off-balance on his serve.
4-3 Kunz. ND badly misses a forehand wide.
4-4. Service winner from Schnurrenberger
5-4 ND. another service winner.
6-4 ND. Lame backhand into the bottom of the net from Kunz.
7-4 Notre Dame wins it. Kunz hit the forehand just deep on the 2nd ball and Notre Dame mobs Schnurrenberger

I don't blame Bresky for trying back up doubles combinations, as we saw with UVA vs. Clemson, anything can happen with guys getting sick or hurt, but boy that was close. #1 dubs was down 5-0. It looks like he is going with his same singles group as of late except Bloom is playing 5 for Dumont. I still don't know why he isn't playing Delcore more in singles.
