Wawrinka Bandwagon?!

Wawrinka has had success lately, but c'mon, he's not like the majestic tennis god that everyone on here is suddenly worshipping. Okay, he beat Djok straight up, and then he beat an injured Nadal. He beat a tired Ferrer and then he beat an older Federer.

He's just a top 5 guy! Why are we worshipping him like he has somehow come down from tennis heaven and will be our new savior from the crystalized top 2?!

Enough already! A healthy Nadal and probably Djokovic will beat him.

Im not on the bandwagon just yet but i might just consider joining it after RG if he makes a run to the semi. He's the only player outside of the Big 4 that has really shown some god-teir tennis and he's produced it at the right times. I still think he is a little too inconsistant against typical top 20 players but he brings it against the top guys and im sure in a slam match, he has plenty of time to step it up if he starts slow.

I think he could suprise us this year, AO looked like a fluke one off at the start of the year but his level seems consistant and i think a semi run at RG is pretty much set in stone. The only 2 players i could see beating him are Nadal and Novak and he should avoid having them both in his side of the draw if he stays #3.

For many reasons. The tennis "experts" told us that the two-hander was superior. That you couldn't play great baseline tennis with a one-hander. He shut them all up AND he's a nice guy.

It's also nice to mix things up at the top.

Regardless of whether Nadal was healthy or not at AO, I think Stan would have won that match anyway. The power he has from the back of the court can be Delpo-like at times. His serves, backhands, forehands all looked powerful and difficult to deal with. If he beats Nadal in their next match I think we have a 2011 Djokovic situation. If not, it looks like Stan just hit form for a few weeks early in 2014. For me it all hinges on the next Stan vs Nadal match as to whether people will believe or not.

Before this season, I thought that Delpo and Stan were the two players with the best chances of upsetting the Big 4. In fact, I gave them both equal or better chances at the AO than Fed and Murray.
Delpo has withered due to his injury, but Stan has risen beyond even my wildest expectations.

You may call it hype or hyperbole, but a 6-0 record vs. the top-10 doesn't lie. And mind you, he had the 3rd best record vs. top-10 last year as well, which was part of the reason for my high expectations this year.

At his best, he can stay with and beat anyone. He's not yet completely consistent and his attacking style leaves him more vulnerable to upsets, when his game is not dialed in. Rafa, Nole and Murray can win matches on their defense alone – Stan's is improved, but not top-5 material.

All in all, there's plenty of reasons to cheer for Stan.
- he has a unique game and hit some of the hardest and heaviest shots in tennis at the moment
- he has a beautiful one-handed backhand
- he's got an attacking mindset and a fairly all-court game given today's standards
- and atm he looks like the sole challenger to the Big-4, who's ruled tennis for an eternity.

Am I the only one happy to see a 'fresh' face? Of course not. And combined with the other reasons, that's why so many of us are happy to see Stan do this well.

Tired by playing 2 sets against Nadal? And in Wawrinka-Ferrer, first set was 6-1 while second set was 7-6. A tired Ferrer was tired in 1st set and not so tired in 2nd set. :lol: You are accusing others of foolish conclusions. Irony after irony. :twisted:

I think if anything, Stan proved he was the real deal all the way back at the USO. His rise to stardom has been pretty incredible to watch and I'm probably enjoying professional tennis more than I have in a long time.

The guy has all the weapons... nobody else is playing the same level of go for broke tennis right now. It isnt a bandwagon... he's learned how to use his gifts to best effect and he has belief now. He's dangerous and I think he would have beaten a non injured Nadal as well.

It is kinda fun to watch a guy who has toiled for so long go super saiyan on the big 4 so regularly. If he keeps it up he may end up #1 this year.

and that backhand... kinda like what Becker would look like with Edberg's backhand. Beasthand

Also, to me, he is the epitome of European machismo (Federer is too elegant, Nadal too histrionic, Murray too petulent, and Djokovic too jerkish). In a sport where us male tennis players are derided as scrawny, unmanly sissies; where casual observers believe Serena hits as hard as the men; and where we endure the insult of being the only sport in the world where female players make equal prize money, Wawrinka is a man the average hard-working Joe can cheer for. He plays tennis like a brawler, a savage with a racquet, hence the fitting nicknames "Stanimal" and "Stan the Man".

Also, Wawrinka doesn't run around his backhand. He lines up your lefty 5000 rpm topspin shot, blasts it DTL for a winner, and asks "Wassup Amigo?"

Stan is a great guy and will be embraced by Fed fans who just want to see anyone step up and stop Nadal. And to a far lesser extent Djoker.

Stan did a HUGE solid for the Fed legacy by beating Nadal no matter what shape he was in, in that final.

I think most Fed fans want to embrace the Stan's, DelPo's (although I've given up on that guy), and Murray's of the world... any Grand Slam (or any tournament/match) not won by Nadal is a good thing for the Fedlegacy at this point.
