Let's Gather All Grip Specs (Weight & Thickness) Into One Thread

Installed two Wilson Sublime Grips (one white, one grey) on a standard 27" Grip 3/8. Both were 16g untrimmed without package, and 12g installed.
Please note: My scale doesn't have decimal points.

Cheers ChicagoJack, I just changed some grips and noticed you didn't have this one on the list:

Pacific Master's Grip: 16g (trimmed, L3 X-Force Pro), 1.80 mm

And for the sake of completeness, although you already list these:

Pacific Pro Leather Grip: 25g (untrimmed, with backing, no tape), 1.50 mm
Pacific Pro Leather Grip: 22g (trimmed, L3 X-Force Pro), 1.50 mm

Well that's weird. 808's last post prompted me to take a look around the Pacific website, to see if there's any new grips or specs. They have 11 synthetic grips and 1 leather, all of which are listed as 1.80mm thick. I can't think of any other company that has every grip on the menu at the same exact thickness. It has me wondering if that's intentional, or perhaps it's just a website error?

Hm, I just checked and apart from the Pro Leather, which is listed as 1.50 mm (same as on the packaging), and X Duo Comfort at 2.10 mm they are indeed all 1.80 mm. I guess it's intentional.

Hi 808 - Thanks for the clarification, I somehow misread the specs for the leather and x duo comfort. It's still notable that a vast majority are 1.80mm, and seeing there are just a few that are not 1.80mm has me trusting the web specs a little more.

Wow, now that's interesting. 2x heavy as the heaviest leather grip. Web page says it's 40" long. That's about 4-8 inches shorter than than most grips. I'm thinking that it's so thick that its not really meant to overlap at all and that explains the shorter length.

anyone know how thick the shocktape is? if one wraps it without overlap how much will it build up a grip?

A couple more data points for grips you already have weights for:

Yonex Super Cushion Grip: 11.3g (stock grip on Yonex VCore Tour G, L3)

Tecnifibre ATP Leather: 27.8g (untrimmed, with backing, no tape)
Tecnifibre ATP Leather: 22.0g (trimmed, Yonex VCore Tour G, L3)

The Tecnifibre leather grip is supposedly 1.5mm thick. As I have 2 more racquets to do tomorrow I can check that along with the thickness of the stock Yonex grip and their respective weights (again) if it's of any interest.

i have a question for all you serious grip crazies ;)

i have a 4 3/8 Yonex original grip (Yonex Super Cushion Grip: 11.3g, i think)
and i want to make the bevels more "pronounced", and more like a Dunlop grip shape.
i hate the Yonex shape, and the "round" feel.
yes i would gladly have used leather,
BUT - i need as minimum change in weight as possible!
AND- without reducing size. don't mind increasing a bit though (otherwise i would just use a Kimony..)

i need some creative ideas ;)

According to the stats page the Yonex grip is fairly thin and light. And you want to not add weight, increase bevel feel but not reduce size. Tricky one, because a slightly thicker grip will reduce your bevel feel and a thicker firmer grip like Gamma Hi-Tec is going to increase the weight. If the description of your current grip is right, I'm guessing its about 1.6mm thick and has probably compressed a bit.

My thought would be a Bab Skin Feel. Wrap as normal around the butt, pulling tight get a good neat wrap start, but as you hit the flat handle, relax the wrap so it doesnt stretch thinner. That grip gives great bevel feel, is quite firm so compression is minimal and its a durable grip, moreso than cushion type grips.

I took off all 4 of my Yonex grips from AI 98s and 100s and they all weighed 7-8 grams tops. The lightest stock grip I have ever encountered. It's also the thinnest around too, so I am not sure how you can get thinner and not get heavier with any other replacement grip. You can try the SkinFeel or ResiThin, but they will both add at least 5 grams.

Thanks for the update, Jack.
I'll think of something.

It's really difficult to keep the same weight when putting on a new grip. Ive seen variable weights in the same make/type grip before, so I think you need to have a slight tolerence. I would say it's more important to get the feel in your hand right. I personally think that if you want a thinnish grip that feels good, you will like the Skin Feel. I use it on a racket that used to have a leather grip, but I wanted to reduce some weight in the handle and add some traction to the grip surface. An overgrip made the grip size to big, so I switched a 1.5mm leather grip to the 1.55mm Skin Feel grip and it's matched the size perfectly, taken about 7g off the weight and the feel is still great after many hours of play.

Guys, do you know specs for Wilson Feather Thin? I see it is 10 g weight untrimmed but how thick it is?

Just seen the Mantis PU replacement grip on a website. Apparently it's 1.6mm thick. I've not seen it in person, so to speak, but potentially another thinnish PU grip.

Hi Robbo1970, JackB1 - Thanks for the digits, much appreciated. I've updated the list.

Hi Muppet - Thanks for the bump. All of the petty squabbles have dampened my passion for the reading or posting the board. But Ill be sure to swing by every once in a while to update the big list on the first page with any new grip specs I find or that folks are phoning in.

Your listing of Skin Feel info was very helpful. I have two Dunlop 200 racquets that I got w/ L5 grip and I have them down to the right size now. Thanks for your help.

ChicagoJack,

I don't look at this thread much more, but I do appreciate it. I finally found some Wilson Pro Hybrid Grips in the UK and bought six, but finally bite the bullet and switched to Volkl Leather grips.

Putting a FS post up soon, I think I have 9 or 10 new Wilson Pro Hybrid Grips, if you ever see someone looking for them. I know Torres and I used them, not sure if others did, but I figure they were around for awhile and most players at my level agree the Sublime grips are an awful replacement for the Pro Hybrid grips - Sublime grips are cheaply made and torn to shreds in no time at all.

Thanks again for all your help in this thread.

Stock Yonex grip removed from 2 x Yonex Ai98 = 11.3g and 11.5g

Stock Head leather grip removed from 1 x Head Graphene Prestige Pro = 23g

If i replace a Wilson Pro Hybrid grip (1.60mm), with a Wilson Leather Grip (1.80mm), then put on two Wilson Pro Overgrips (0.60mm each), which calculates to 3.00mm. A 1/16th inch will increase the grip by haf a size, and 1/16th equals roughly 1.58mm, would it be possible to increase a full grip size using this method?

Does anyone have the thickness for the Wilson FeatherThin Replacement grip? Thanks

It's about 1.5mm but I suggest against it.

I tried one. It feels very papery, doesnt wrap very well (leaves ridges like an overgrip) and even the slightest pull when wrapping will cause it to tear.

I would always suggest the Babolat Skin Feel over the Feather Thin or Resi-Thin. I've tried all three and recommend the Babolat by a mile.

Thanks robbo1970 for the recommendation. I was about to purchase a few Feather Thin but I'll stick with the Skin Feel. You, ChicagoJack, and the infamous JackB1 are a credit to this message board.

Not sure if these Karakal grips have been mentioned before, but I've just found a few thickness stats for the thread.

X-tra. 1.8mm at its thinnest point, up to 2.8mm at its thickest (ridged grip)
X-air. 2.00mm
X-gel. 2.6mm

I'm a big fan of the PU Super, I use it with all my rackets. I've tried so many grips and always come back to this one. It's a good thickness at about 1.8-1.9, great tack, durable and firm, not squishy like some synth grips. White is the best if you can get it.

I'm not sure if it's listed, but does anyone know the weight of the stupid synthetic leather grip that comes with the Wilson Prostaff 97 (the non-Federer version)? I ask because I put on a real leather grip and I want to know what the weight difference is so I can add the right amount of lead to the hoop.

If I was to guess its of similar construction to the Head synthetic leather, then I would guess the trimmed, installed weight is about 12/13g.

I'm a bit confused, with all the changes over the years, which grips are the lightest? I'm replacing the leatherr grips on my RF97s, and looking to decrease the weight.

Here's a new thin grip for the list.

Genesis Tru Comfort 1.5mm

Hey thanks robbo1970, (for all of your contributions here) looks like I listed that back in 2013. The list has grown, which is a good thing, but perhaps it's getting harder to find what you are looking for and easier to overlook what's already there. :)

hey guys...
is there a reasonably LIGHT but THICK leather grip?
i needed a thick rep grip,
and synthetics go up to 2.0 mm and above,
while leather cannot be thicker than 1.80mm.. no?
my problem is i need a thick grip but with enough BEVEL feel.
synthetic just becomes too round for me..
don't care about the "cushioness" aspect.
i went over the list but still confused a bit.
thanks.

I think you're looking at a Fairway. At 25g and 1.8mm thick, its about the lightest proportionately, but to go lighter you're going thinner. Even the thicker, firmer synthetics like Gamma Hi-Tec are pushing the 20+ gram mark.

yes, Fairway was one of the only options,
but where do i get it these days??
ok, i found some options.. wow, quite a price they put on it.

so i guess they still haven't invented a Synthetic grip that maintain an accurate bevel feel :(

Gamma Hi Tec is supposed to be quite good. But other than that you're looking at the thinner grips like Skin Feel if you want sharp bevel feel.

Here's a question that always goes through my mind....a thin grip like Bab Skin Feel is 1.55mm but quite firm feeling. Therefore, if you had a grip that was 1.85mm but softer feeling, bearing in mind that there is only 0.3mm difference in pre-compressed thickness, which will feel thinner when you grip your racquet handle?

I just googled an actual size difference image and 0.3mm is tiny, almost hard to even notice when looking at it.

So I think its fair to add to this thread, when choosing thinner or thicker grips, consider the stretch and compression of the grip and the feel of the surface.

I tried a very thin grip recently, the Genesis Tru Comfort at 1.5mm....awful feeling grip. Felt like dry paper.

Removed the grip of my Yonex AI 98 (Yonex Cushion grip?) and it weighed 11grams.

The MSV Cyber Wet overgrip is listed as 0.50mm, I believe it is 0.60mm. However, it still feels a tiny bit thicker than Yonex Supergrap (also 0.60mm), still it feels very and nice tacky and it seems pretty durable (& cheap!).
