I was unable to find any non-Apple apps that give me more text because of more space outside of those where you can control the font size. All of the non-Apple apps did get updated for 8.0 though.

Yeah, someone said instagram and twitter had blown everything up twice as big, to think you could only get 2 or 3 tweets or pictures on the massive screen is pretty funny! The Plus will probably only come into it's own when they get up to speed, hopefully it should be sorted in the next week or two.

Yeah the apps have to be optimized for the 6+. It usually takes 1-2 months in my experience.

Instagram will be an amazing app on the 6+ once it is optimized.

Look at the video a guy made with his already. It is really impressive.

Fena interested in your impressions, maybe that video will inspire you to make some of your own.

it means that no matter what Apple does, like insisting that a mobile phone should be small and then renege and produce a giant, Applebots will find no wrong.

I don't get angry. Only regarding my brother's iphone, because my mom ended up walking into some awful contract just to get him to shutup. I kind of just laugh at the rest of my not immediate family, because I think they all own iphones and fall under the sheeple category. Don't look into other options, just get the latest iphone that's available when their upgrade is ready. Or like when my cousin, who had gone through 2 laptops already at 15, says she wants to get a macbook because it's "better quality" and "doesn't get viruses." I explained that I've had the same notebook for about 8 years now with no virus problems (had one hardware issue but was solved through a class action suit). I showed her an Asus rog series notebook that was about 1k cheaper and better spec'd. Didn't matter.

I find that in general there's just an ignorance in people like that which I find slightly off-putting. But I also have an elitist attitude about some things.

Anyway...I've actually been looking at my own options for a new phone. Probably going to wait till Christmas time to see what comes out. I've mostly been intrigued by the HTC One, but I think both HTC and Motorola are bringing out new phones pretty soon. Either get a newer model or an older one on discount. Also, I didn't realize that Asus makes phones also, so I'm going to look into those.

Not sure what's worse... Apple-Android fans or Rafa-Federer-Novak-... Fans.

I have and had both iOS and Android devices (also blackberry, palm, windows CE, Windows phone...).

iOS and Android accomplish the same tasks in different ways. I find neither vastly superior to the other. That said, I bought my first Android phone so I could have a bigger screen. The iOS folks upgrading to the 6 plus will realize quickly that there's no going back. iPad mini's will get less love.

Have to admit though that iOS launch is well... sloppy.

Not a phablet?

One of the first things I did with it was return a call to my boss/CEO. My first thought was "glad I didn't get the 6+, because there is no way I could hold that thing to my ear".

Now, not many people will actually use it as a traditional phone (pretty much everybody has some form of Bluetooth), but I guess I'm old that way & prefer to talk into something...

I generally use the speakerphone or a headset for mobile calls.

I did give some thought to returning the i6 and getting a i5s but I'll probably keep the i6.

I don't like holding something large and flat up to my ear as a phone. The flip-phones were better for talking because of the length that they opened up to without being wide and the angle that they opened to.

Interesting. I had not thought about that yet but since I don't talk on the phone excessively I don't think it will be a problem.

A lot of my friends aren't used to the I6 size yet, but I had an HTC evo that was 5.3 inches in length for 2 years so for me, it is not a big change.

Honestly still prefer the smaller phone, but the tech is going towards larger phones and it appears that the days of the small cell phones are dead.

Apple changed the game not in phone size, but in optimization for the larger phones. What I mean is they made a powerful phone with a gorgeous screen that benchmarks very well and doesn't suck battery.

My Evo was dead by 4pm everyday with moderate use and could be laggy even when rooted (with the constant optimization updates) and purged of all bloatware. My friends LG dies at around 8pm if he doesn't charge. The 6+ is lasting all the way through day 2 for the one person I know so far with one.

What does this mean for Droid? Bigger phones, better optimization and better battery life as well. I believe 2015 is going to be a great year for folks who are looking to upgrade as either platform should have an offering that delivers excellent battery life on a large screen.

Some of it is perception and frame of reference:
The mobile phone I spoke on the most (actually used as a handset rather than as a mobile computer or a speaker phone) was the Motorola Micro tac Elite. Bigger and heavier than any smartphone.

The flat, Hershey's bar shape is a factor too:
Does anyone look silly talking on a bigger and heavier home wireless phone?

In any case it's really a misnomer to call these devices "phones" or "smartphones"... They're really mobile computers with a phone feature.

You're right in that it will take me some time to get used to the larger 4.7 inch. If they put the iPhone 6 features in the iPhone 5 and called it the iPhone 6 Minus, I would strongly consider that in two years - but I carry an iPad Mini with me if I need a bigger screen.

I'm kind of surprised that more people don't use wireless or wired headsets and that people don't have Bluetooth systems in their cars. I think that Bluetooth is standard in Toyota cars now but I see people in high-end luxury cars driving with their phone to their ear. I don't know if their cars don't have Bluetooth, they haven't set it up or they are just used to putting it up to their ear.

That's because most Bluetooth setups in cars suck. I know exactly when my wife is on the car's Bluetooth because I can barely understand her, and she has a $55K 2012 VW. Same thing for my Audi (which is NOT a top-of-the-line Audi, BTW).

I just messed with the I6. It is so slim, and the screen is gorgeous. Does not seem too large to me, but once again I had a 5.5 inch droid that was far thicker.

This moves me even more towards getting a 6+.

I've never had complaints over line quality when on Bluetooth phone calls in my car though I only do a few calls a week.

We have a law in my state that starts in 2015 which restricts what you can do with a phone in your car. Calls (placing or answering) require a hands-free device.

"The new distracted driving law prohibits drivers from using hand-held devices to make or receive calls, send text messages or search the Internet. Bluetooth technology in vehicles, such as ear pieces and similar hands-free devices. are permitted for drivers over the age of 18."

"There are no shortcuts. You can’t grab the phone and text or call at a stop light; you must pull over somewhere safe to answer the phone unless it can be done in a “one-touch” manner. Starting July 2015, if a police officer observes you driving with a phone to your ear, you could be pulled over and ticketed without having committed any other offense. Violators will be fined $100 for the first offense; $250 for the second; and $500 for subsequent violations within a 24-month period. There is an exception for calls to 9-1-1 during an emergency."

http://www.nhada.com/printer_friendly.cfm?EID=3968

The ban also applies to GPS devices though I think that most devices sold today can take voice commands for navigation.

Why are Chinese people buying up 40-50 Iphones at a time and taking it to china ?

It's not only China but the reason is that they can sell them for double.

"However, at the Apple store in the Pheasant Lane Mall in Nashua, N.H. on Tuesday, the screams were those of a 44-year-old Chinese woman being Tasered by police."

"As WMUR-TV reports, Xiaojie Li, of Newton, N.H. says -- through her 12-year-old daughter's translation -- that she isn't proficient in English."

""She's certainly capable of coming up here and purchasing these things from the Apple store here. Whether her language inhibited that, I really don't know." Those were the words of Captain Bruce Hansen of the Nashua Police Department."

http://www.cnet.com/news/woman-tasered-after-trying-to-buy-too-many-iphones/

I was actually at this Apple Store the next day - for a Mac issue and I observed people walking in and buying 20, 30, 50 at a time. I was somewhat amazed at seeing that because the lady wanted to buy a couple of them and they wouldn't sell her more than the official limit (1 or 2). The people buying were of different races. I wasn't sure what was going on but there was a lot of money going through that store while I was there and this was a while after the phone started selling.

8.0.2: downloading the update, 4 minutes remaining. I guess a lot of people are downloading it.

I was somewhat surprised that the i6, with a not too bulky case, was bigger than my Poetic Palette wearing G2.

Isn't the G2 technically larger though?

Meanwhile, dParis, you see this quote on the bending issue? "The new phones face criticism over their bendability, dubbed "bendgate". Social media and online forums have been abuzz with comments about how the new phones can bend when placed in back pockets or while wearing skinny jeans" Yikes!!!!

iOS 8.0.1 coming soon.

Is this a good thing or bad thing?

Heycal brought up a good point that you still can't relocate the buttons which show up at the top of the screen so you would have to do the double tap on the home button to reach them 1 handed. It might not be that big of a deal once you get into the habit of using it though.

It spooked me. Can't tell if it would be an ongoing issue or something I'd get used to just fine.

I'm starting to think that Jobs was right on smaller phones. The iPhone 5/5S may indeed be the perfect size for maximum mobility.

I felt that as well when I picked up the 5s after playing with 6.

Sounds like you're not adjusting to the size if you've considered returning it, huh?

What does this mean? Why do people get so passionate about a phone? For years I never understood the small cult following Apple had. Then I picked up the first iPhone.

I had this feeling when I switched to a Mac Air last year after years of PC. "I get it now! This baby's near perfect!"

Then I picked up the iphone -- and my reaction was "Great phone in 10 ways -- and a horrible one in 10 other ways!!!"

The i6 is incredibly thin. I'm not sure what was gained by making it as such.

I felt it might be too thin, but when I envision a case on it, it might be just perfect.

Interestingly enough, the G3 battery is not that great.

What??? Battery life is personal, so how could you make such a crazy generalization?

Yeah, someone said instagram and twitter had blown everything up twice as big, to think you could only get 2 or 3 tweets or pictures on the massive screen.

Welcome to my world.

pretty much this…

whats really amazing/pathetic is that they (the sheep) can't seem to recognize their own behavior...

Yup. "Notification night? Who would want that?", "Annoying outgoing text sound? Don't even hear it!"

The flip-phones were better for talking because of the length that they opened up to without being wide and the angle that they opened to.

Flip phones had a lot going over them. Guaranteed call ending when you shut the phone, open to answer, no butt dials, physical keyboards, great battery life -- you know, depending on the person, I guess -- and some other nice things too.

. I just prefer the Mac OS for how I work.

Don't confuse iPhone with Mac. I've met the Mac. I own a Mac. And the iPhone is no Mac.

.

Sounds like there's some personal issues going on in these cases...

Found a bug in the 8.0.2 update. After it updates your system, it asks you if you want to update to 8.0.2 again. Basically that means that someone didn't set a control version number correctly (that might have to be fixed in an 8.0.3). Browser performance is greatly improved, even better than 7.0. I wonder if this is a WiFi fix or a browser change.

BTW, I upgraded my iPad Mini, not my iPhone. I'm going to wait until tomorrow to upgrade my iPhone 6.

I created a thread on the shell shock vulnerability - it affects all Unix systems including Linux and Mac OS X. Android is a variant of Linux so it might be vulnerable as well. Google and Amazon made a statement that they're going to patch all of their servers (that's going to be a massive amount of work). They may also need to issue patches for Chromebooks and Android. The problem with Android would be where the carrier does the OS version upgrades and where they do a really poor job at it.

Update: I read an article that said that Android uses a bash alternative so it's not vulnerable. Windows Phone isn't vulnerable. iPhone vulnerability is unclear - it depends on whether network services can launch it with privileges. An article that I read said that vulnerability is unlikely.

iOS and Android accomplish the same tasks in different ways. I find neither vastly superior to the other..

I wouldn't say they accomplish the same tasks in different ways. Sometimes, sure. But other times, not at all. One does one things the other phone does not, and vice versa.

There are two ways I think of the difference:

1) Would you rather have a phone that does 10 things brilliantly and 10 things horribly? Or one that does 40 things decently? It's a gross simplification/exaggeration, but I think you get my point. And I believe some people might not care much about the 10 things iPhone does horribly, so the choice seems obvious to them. Others might really want the all the bells and whistles and customization options of an Android and the choice seems obvious to them.

I fall somewhere in the middle unfortunately...

2) My 'car' analogy: The iphone is like a 1967 Jaguar, gorgeous to look at, wonderful to drive, incredible cornering, and the like. But it's got no power locks, no sun roof, no shoulder strap, manual windows, uncomfortable seats, only an am radio, etc.

Android, meanwhile, is like a liked a fully loaded Cadillac. Power everything, tons of cool features, a roomy interior, state of the art braking system, a nice cushy ride -- but not really a breathtaking piece of machinery and a bit clunky.

Both cars are great in their one way. So which one do you want?

8.0.2 is still causing problems for Australian customers but seems fine elsewhere.

Actually it's a lot better than just fine on my iPad Mini.

One thing I noticed is that it doesn't have the predictive keyboard even though I have the option selected.

The predictive keyboard works on my i6.

I will do the 8.0.2 upgrade later today if I don't hear of any issues with it. My iPhone 6 actually works fine but I'd like the much better WiFi performance that I now see in my iPad Mini.

Cool thing is 90% of the people in here are OS agnostic it seems like.

It's funny, the 6+ size does not phase me, but the potential bending and also the fact that many are reporting lag is worth monitoring. I have a month before any of them trickle down here and I can buy mine, so Ill just see how the opinions sort out over that time.

It's a sign to lose the skinny jeans - unless you're getting a healthy discount on them with your AARP card, I guess.

I've heard about the 6+ bending, for sure - but I'm not sure about the 6. It wouldn't surprise me if it did, as it is just as thin and uses the same materials. Would your phone bending out of shape be something that would bother you?

Okay, about Lightflow LED; the short answer is no, I don't believe it works exactly how I set it up 100% of the time. For instance, while I was using the phone this morning I received a text message. I finished what I was doing, checked the message and then turned off the phone. I noticed my SMS notification light was blinking, so I went back into my text app to see if I had missed reading another text somehow. There were no unread texts , so I turned off my phone again and the flashing stopped.

I think there have been times when I hear a notification chime but no light flashes when I receive a text - but it may be that my phone chimed for a notification which I don't have connected to lightflow. The truth is, I don't heavily rely on the led at all. I'm checking my phone fairly regularly during the day. Lightflow is more of a backup or added convenience. I can't recall a situation when I missed a text or other notification for a significant period of time because lightflow wasn't working properly.

My wife has the Nexus 5 and it is a great phone (except for battery life) but I don't think that notification works 100%.
