Very nice work with the stats, thanks.

I think that players have to face off a reasonable number of times for there to be a 'true' H2H advantage.

Let's say 5 matches.

In which case Davydenko is the only man with a winning H2H against Nadal, and Roddick is the only man with a winning H2H against Djokovic.

Greatest players against which big 3 have an undefeated record against:

1)Rafa Nadal undefeated vs Andre Agassi
2)Roger Federer undefeated vs Pete Sampras
3)Novak Djokovic undefeated vs Milos Raonic

Is there a coherent point to this thread? Yes, someone like Hrbaty has a winning record against Federer because they mostly played when Fed was practically a child and Hrbaty was a seasoned player, and that's the case with lots of what's posted here. A little pointless??

Yeah, add to that both fed and nadal will end up losing to Novak h2h probably by end of next yr.

Lol if Djokovic retires with winning H2H over Federer, Nadal and Murray when he retires (which is not that unthinkable).

What are the Nadal-brigade H2H specialists gonna say to that?

It will be a plus H2H advantage over his rivals + His other achievements. Novak and Federer are better against the field than Nadal. Djokovic is on the other hand will have a unique argument that he is better against the field and against his rivals a claim both Federer and Nadal can't claim.

Wow. One of the most informative thread heres. Good job, OP.
Kyrgios is 1-0 vs. Fed, and 1-0 vs. Nadal. Would be interesting to see how those H2Hs develop.
And Brown is 2-0 vs. Nadal?

This may be too much to ask. Is it possible to separate losing records into those against older players and those against younger players? I'll do a manual count for the Big 3 and Murray in a moment.

Nadal is 9-4 in slams vs Djokovic. No amount of Beijing Open HTH wins will change that.

As for the OP, the less said the better. Victorp aka jm1980 made a deplorable post after the tragedy in France and should thank his lucky stars that he didn't get banned. I called him out on it and he has yet to reply. Timing of this thread is funny too. Wonder why he didn't start it a month ago....obvious troll is obvious.

Random observation: Lendl is 3-5 against Sampras. Never mind that Ivan is 11 years older than Pete. A totally meaningless and misleading stat.
They did play all their matches between 90 and 94... When Lendl was 30-34 and Sampras was 19-23. If we exclude the two matches Sampras won in 94 then they are tied

Random observation: Lendl is 3-5 against Sampras. Never mind that Ivan is 11 years older than Pete. A totally meaningless and misleading stat.
Lendl is 7 years older than Becker and 11:10 in H2H and he is also 4 years older than Wilander and is 15:7 H2H against him.

Very good stats.

Can you calculate the h2hs for prime players, let's say a player is prime from winning his first slam to the last. This should be more meaningful than just h2h which obviously include long periods of past prime play, penalising players who chose to have long careers.

To be fair, most of Federer wins against Djokovic have happened well before Djokovic's prime. It all evens out.

The only bllsht is your post. The rest of us are free to draw our own conclusions.

I'm personally grateful for the work done.

What you have you contributed?

Ok, maybe my contribution was a little bit from the belly and not the brain :eek:

I think these stats are a poor indicator of a player's value, because of the many parameters they leave aside: age difference, percentage of matches played on one of the player's best surface, match-up, etc. IMO, you can only use this indicator when all of the above is balanced.

As for the fact that the OP did a lot of work: I'm sure you have had classmates who gave back works that were pages and pages longer that yours, and still their work was poor quality. Hard work is not necessarily good work.

One figure looks interesting though: all these ATG seem to have a overall losing record of about 7-10%, except for Nadal and Djokovic. What could explain this, if it is accurate?

you're harsh, the OP has spend some time coding and getting the data. so give credit when its due.

There are a two reasons why Nole and Rafa is doing very well:

1. They are top 5 ATGs (yes, Nole is on track to surpass Borg).
2. Their careers haven't finished. you expect their H2H to worsen when they get older (eg. laver's losing record against the much younger Borg)
3. They started playing well really EARLY, ie. 19 for Rafa and 20 for Nole. This means compared to Federer, they had 2 or 3 extra years of very HIGH winning rate. Most of Federer's losses came before 22. As such, even when they get older, its very likely for them to end their careers with better H2H percentages than Federer.
4. They excel on ALL surfaces, unlike say Sampras

OP, could you give a list of the Big 3's losses to younger players? Thanks.
I composed one for Novak some time ago but couldn't find it. I remember the only younger players having multiple wins on him were Delpo and Nishikori.
While Fed was challenged by younger players like Rafa, Novak, and Andy even during his prime, Rafa and Novak rarely lose to younger players. Rafa is losing more these days, but Novak is keeping it up, never losing to younger ones in 2015.

Lol if Djokovic retires with winning H2H over Federer, Nadal and Murray when he retires (which is not that unthinkable).

What are the Nadal-brigade H2H specialists gonna say to that?

This is a disappointing post. You have forgotten several important things that you used to know. Please let me remind you:

1) First of all, Nadal has never (never) lost a match except when he was injured. Probably never will do so, either.
2) Nadal leads Djokovic 9-4 in Slams. Only Slam H2H counts. Bull sometimes lulls his opponents into a false sense of security by not playing his forehand down the line in minor events so that he can surprise them in majors. Djokovic, by contrast, majors in minors.
3) Nadal's disappointing season in 2015 sets him up perfectly for a dominant 2016. After all, he won 4 games against Djokovic in Beijing and 6 in London even in circumstances that favored Djokovic. This proves that if they play next year, Nadal will win. Nadal is likely to win at least three Slams in 2016. The only reason he might not win the Grand Slam is that his knee might not hold up for a whole season. Otherwise, he will again be unstoppable (see point 1). Vamos!

Is there a new religion set up around Rafa or something? Good for him.
But you are dead wrong. He is never injured (how could he be?). He uses injury as a disguise for his charity rained on the mortals.

Do a search for some of Thomas Ferrett's previous posts. As you'll see, he is high priest of the new religion.

I think this is an interesting set of data, but we need to keep in mind that some of the players are still playing, and strange losses happen most often at the beginning of a career, and at the end.

It would be interesting to see the chronology of when this all happened.

Let's take a look at Fed's losses:

Losing records:

Baby Fed:

  1. Lucas Arnold Ker [ARG]: 0-1 (1998)
  2. Jan Siemerink [NED]: 0-1 (1998)
  3. Christophe Van Garsse [BEL]: 0-1 (1999)
  4. Byron Black [ZIM]: 0-1 (1999)
  5. Kenneth Carlsen [DEN]: 0-1 (1999)
  6. Markus Hantschk [GER]: 0-1 (2000)
  7. Sergi Bruguera [ESP]: 0-1 (2000)
  8. Francisco Clavet [ESP]: 0-1 (2000)
  9. Andrei Medvedev [UKR]: 0-1 (2000)
  10. James Sekulov [AUS]: 0-1 (2000)
  11. Alex Corretja [ESP]: 2-3 (last loss 2001)
  12. Yevgeny Kafelnikov [RUS]: 2-4 (last loss 2001)
  13. Wayne Ferreira [RSA]: 1-2 (last loss 2001)
  14. Patrick Rafter [AUS]: 0-3 (last loss 2001 Halle)
  15. Andrea Gaudenzi [ITA]: 0-1 (2002)
  16. Thomas Enqvist [SWE]: 1-3 (last loss 2002 at IW)
Prime Fed:
  1. Franco Squillari [ARG]: 0-2 (last loss 2003, first 2001)
  2. Dominik Hrbaty [SVK]: 1-2 (important loss in 2004)
  3. Gustavo Kuerten [BRA]: 1-2 (important loss in 2004 at RG)
  4. Rafael Nadal [ESP]: 11-23
Grandpa:
  1. Federico Delbonis [ARG]: 0-1 (2013)
  2. Nick Kyrgios [AUS]: 0-1 (2015)
According to what I see there are only 4 players with a winning record against Fed during his prime. The worst loss other than to Nadal was to Kuerten at RG. And of course Nadal stands out as Fed's kryptonite. ;)

Love Hrbaty having a h2h lead over 3/4 of the big 4 and Corretja and Krygios leading Fed and Nadal! Fernando Gonzalez and the huge FH with leads over both Djokovic and Murray too.

Murray's loss to Gonzalez in the QF of RG in 2009 is significant. But the other matches were before either had established himself. Gonzalez is 7 years older, a year older than Fed.

Still thought it was interesting. Of course the Hrbaty and Corretja wins were well before those players primes too besides that one Hrbaty miracle at Cincy in 04.
