The U.K. isn't prepared for any length of heat wave...they drink their beer p1ss warm and consider A/C a luxury for soft American visitors.
Heat waves there are so rare and so short, that they're not prepared for them.
It's designed to handle cool or cold weather, and they get plenty of that.

Tell me about it...to paraphrase Mark Twain, "I've never spent a colder winter than my summer in London."

And the autumn was just as bad!

But it's a dry heat.

Seriously, England is humid. It's the combination of heat and humidity that is so uncomfortable.

That's true, it's like being in a sauna when the weather is good.

It's back to being 65f, overcast and wet now though, so normal service is resumed! I've said it before, but in general the only way to tell what time of the year it is in the U.K. is by how early it gets dark.. dark by 4pm? It's winter. Still light getting on for 11pm? Must be summer! The weather itself rarely changes much.

I object to your calling suresh a "soft American". Just cos hez kind hearted and soft-spokin don't make him soft.
There's a silent ban on Sewretch ever visiting the U.K. It was prompted by the very strong Indian restaurant association, determined to remain in profitability. They are much stronger than the plumbers union and also have spies in that union who informed them of the planned all-expenses-paid vacation the union was dangling in front of his nose.

An early Atkinson sketch where he played a British racist ended with the punch line: 'Now that we have your recipes, you can go home!'.

It doesn't really work too well on the page, but he played it well.
That is why Sewretch staggers his tennis secrets and discoveries one every year on this forum.

As someone who is extra-sensitive to caffiene (and an insomniac) -- if I have a cuppa at noon or later, I am wide awake all night -- I was perplexed to find that having some coffee at dinner time does not impair my sleep. It may even help in some way.

When i have chocolate icecream after dinner, I put fudge on it, and sprinkle coffee on it.

Ever since I've been doing some coffee after dinner, I've been sleeping fine.

Right you are there. I've found that hard evening workouts pump up the body or something. Even a late night walk can do that. When I was training 85mpw or more those were the worst times as far as sleep went.

Light caffiene is a relaxant. I always fall asleep after a mild cup of tea or coffee.

Rained today, temps have fallen :)

Temps have fallen and a Solar Minimum starting. Will cause upper atmosphere cooling should let out the build up of hot air as heat rises. Now
hopefully will not turn into a mini ice age.

To all those who believe in global climate change, PLEASE, give up playing tennis. Your strings, racquets, dampness, grips, grip tape, climate cool
clothing, and tennis shoes made from petroleum by products. Put action to your beliefs. Quit driving an auto, riding a bicycle, give up sunglasses,
eat only raw food. These activities require petroleum by products. Don't expect others to sacrifice for you. Set an example, then others might follow
the example you demonstrate.

Some are predicting very COLD temps for England starting in 2018.

Temps are incredibly comfortable in my area. We've had a rather cool spring and summer so far. Not a lot of good beach days. Going back a few years and using Natural Gas prices as a proxy for temperatures:

2013 $3.00 - $4.00
2014 $3.50 - $4.95
2015 $2.50 - $2.60
2016 $2.00 - $3.05
2017 $2.85 - $3.35

I'd guess that prices were much higher back before fracking NG started. I think that the high for NG was $15/mbtu during the winter. NG is a proxy for temperatures because it's the main fuel for electricity that powers air conditioners.

Interesting post. And Yes, fracking has driven the price of NG considerably lower. I have read new contract signed to ship LNG to large Asian country.
Plus, U.S. has the largest supply of NG in the world. That is until another source is found, which is possible.

One thing to take note of is talk about more nuke plants. However, with all the talk about limited water, and nuclear thats copious amounts of
water to cool fuel rods, plus, spent fuel rods require even more water to keep them from overheating. Nuclear does not make sense to me at all.
Especially, since spent rods have to be kept cool, for I have heard, 250,000 years. Water pump failures could cause huge problems and water
scarcity talk, nuclear just does not make sense period.

If money is to be made from nuclear then I believe it is possible because mankind is driven to profit, d-mm the consequences.

I think that Wind Power in my state generates about 11% of the electricity demand of the state but our state is mostly empty and we have plenty of windy areas that are far away from resident populations that may not want windmills in their back yards. It's not a good state for solar because of the weather though we have more and more solar popping up too. Our state has one Nuclear plant that was built several decades ago, and there's an empty pad for a second plant so it wouldn't be hard to set up if someone wanted to do so. But the latest plant that went up, about 15 years ago, was a huge NG-fired plant and that provides as much power as the current nuclear plant. Both plants together generate far more than the state needs - the remainder is sold to MA and maybe NY - places where it is far harder to site power plants because of environmental regulations.

I dry our non-cotton and some of our cotton clothes on hangers in a large closet where the water heater is. I dry some of them on an old bicycle too. It is sometimes to humid to dry cotton clothes via hang-dry here.

Yup, with the rain today, my clothes ain't drying(mostly cotton, but one Nike synth tshirt too), even though I had the fan on over the line.
The good thing about the 114 degrees is the clothes dry quickly.

Many years ago this month driving to LV, I got out of my air conditioned car at Furnace Creek Ranch in Death Valley in 120+F I couldn't believe it...it was dry heat but debilitating for me who rarely has experienced 100F. I don't know how anyone can survive in that heat...let alone run a marathon like they do annually!

I'm that way too. I've heard that if you're ADHD caffeine affects you that way. Whatever, caffeine doesn't keep me awake at all, and I like to relax with a nice cup of coffee before bed.

Finally I am meeting someone, albeit anonymously, who has the same experience as mine. Every physical person that I have spoken to about this looks at me like I am an unicorn.

Fila actually has awesome thin fabric that wicks and dries super fast ... almost like a radiator.

ADHD medications are stimulants but they calm those with ADHD. Some folks with ADHD sell their prescriptions to other students for their stimulative effects.

Some say that I have ADHD but coffee wakes me up.

whoa - so I am ADHD?

I played in the heat today.
It's really not that bad if you drink a lot of water (before, during and after). Helps to wear a pique shirt and a cool hat. Feels really good to stop after 2 hours. Time for a Shower and some food.
Wish Wimbledon were on tonight. Cannot wait for it to start in a few days.

It's possible. Maybe Ollinger could chime in here.

I think that there are a number of genes associated with ADHD so it's possible that you may have some or many of them. You could probably look around on websites for clues as to whether or not you have it. If you do and you can function well, then it may not be an issue.

when I play, i get distracted too easily by others on the court and not pay the required attention to the ball. Is that why?

You guys belong to the "we are a bunch of loosers" thread.

110-115 is practically what I run in for several months of the year. You young 40 somethings have been spoiled by decades of air-conditioning, Nike dryfit/Adidas climachill and what knot. Then all these expensive electrolytes, mineral water and stuff you carry around. Back in my days, we just drank water where we found it, clean or not, cold or not. We had a sip and headed out. We were not afraid of sweating. We did not put on layers of sun cream, lotions, blockers, dark glasses and all sorts of protection against the climate we have lived in for millions of years. We wore some cheap cotton singlet and just went out.
We didn't have watches that measured our heart rates, stride length, step count, global coordinates, and then sent notifications to all our friends at every mile mark.

We got back home, glugged some water, had a bite of whatever fruit was lying around, hit the shower and went back to work. We ran through heat waves, cold, snow, rain, sleet and even curfews. We went for runs when people were afraid of getting out of their houses for fear of a stray bullet or bomb.
Nothing stopped us.

Lucky you !
I never thought of it that way before. I used to feel I was unlucky, as coffee could be used to keep other people awake, but didn't help me. I didn't see the advantage of it.

Maybe that is why pot made me nervous and paranoid? I couldn't understand how other people said that it made them relaxed and they enjoyed it.

Impressive. Proud of you. Was it you who you moved to LV from Portlandia?

Part of me thinks you actually like the serious heat. That is extra-ordinary, meaning apart from ordinary, meaning not normal...to be in your element in temperatures over 105.
Part of me thinks you are strong, and thinking positively. And it is working.
And part of me thinks, "he crazy". Most humans like what feels good on the body. 68 degrees Fahrenheit!
Efficiency, not having to heat, or cool the body.

When it is cold (30 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit?) you have to move, and put on some layers. Good circulation kicks in.
Happy playing tennis when it's in the fifties. Warmups are such a key to performance. Clothing, too...I peel off a layer or two.
Loving the 60s and 70s. Homeostasis without much effort.
Into the eighties, i am happiest. Joints are smooth when it is warm....or is this my imagination? I am sweating, but also drinking enough, i hoap.
Over ninety, it is a must to drink a lot of water, before, during and after. Body is happy.
Over a hundred, like 90s, but add the burning feeling on the forearms, legs, and neck. No thanks. Body not as happy.
Over 110, third set, long point, i just want to walk, not run to the ball, LOL! This is where we ought to dress like the bedouins or berbers. Just want to stay cool. No moisture wicking, please. Going outside to mow the lawn can wait.
Over 115, i have no experience, but i would think you have to live your life, avoiding the peak hours in the sun.

Wait a minute....
Are we just too soft now? How did the ancients do it? Did they have some arcane air conditioners?

What happens when it is also humid? I like humidity for the way it slows down the ball. But, this is where people have trouble with stamina, breathing, and dehydration.
For me, drinking a gallon the night before a match comes into play.
