Nadal holds yet another record (spoiler: it's about #1)

It looks like Nadal is the player with the longest span between first and last becoming ATP #1. The previous record was held by Jimmy Connors, who had a longevity at the #1 of just under 9 years. Nadal surpassed him in August or September.

If Fed somehow manages to gain the #1 spot ever again, he will probably hold the record for a long time. Can Federer do this, or is he doomed to (yet again) play second fiddle to Nadal? :)

The fact that you thing that Federer is a second fiddle to Nadal makes you comical in the eyes of the reasonable people

That's not a record. It's an interesting fact.

Hahaha what a pathetic excuse. If Federer doesn't make it, then it is not a record. Ridicoulous. To be 237 consecutive weeks as number 1 is a record bacause Federer achieved it. To be the man with the longest span between the first and last time being #1 is not a record because Federer didn't achieve it.

Fred should be able to make semis in Melbourne again. Nadal would get knocked out early and lose a lot of points. Perfect chance for Fed to take #1 for a few weeks, then Dubai to pad a bit. But then has 2000 pts to defend in Sunshine Slam.

What's Federer got to do with it? I don't care too much about individuals in the sport.

Arent you supposed to give an explanation so that I can understand?
You contested my claim that Federer would play second fiddle to Nadal once more, so I'd like to know first what you think "playing second fiddle" meant. If you had asked what it meant to begin with, I would have explained, but as things stand right now, I think you should be the one to explain why you think that statement was outrageous.

This is factually incorrect. If Fed makes SF at the Australian, he will lose 1280 points, which is more than Nadal has to defend. So if Nadal doesn't even play and Fed doesn't make the Final, Nadal will increase the gap.

Ironically, it's clay where Fed could take #1, since Nadal has a lot to defend there. Unfortunately for Fed, he would need to play on clay, and prove why he is the most underrated clay courter of the last 100 years. :)

I like the contest more than the individuals, you fool.
I'm impartial in particular fedal fan war, but man who do you think you fool? It's clear that you're playerfanboy who can't deal with Nadal or any other player who is winning titles instead of your fav:D

The line separating records and interesting facts is a faint one. Is consecutive weeks at #1 a record?

Good point, is there a record for most times at Number 1? ie seeing as the top spot changed hands virtually every 2nd week at times during the 80s and 90s.
Nevertheless, Nadal's record is very Connors-like in it's appearance.
He'll probably hold it until at least the middle of next year now, Fed I doubt will play a full season to genuinely contend for it again.

No, I have no favourite player. It's sad when individuals become bigger than the sport, sad when all surfaces are dominated by the same style, and sad when there's rarely a genuine contest until the quarters or semis, if that. Instead, we have people idolising the state of the game because their billionaire, privileged, medically advantaged idol has more toys than the other privileged billionaire. I like playing in a contest and watching a contest.

If you're that upset, stop watching current game then. Go watch old videos when game was more interesting to you It's quite easy. :)

Well, I'll do as I wish, thanks. I hope the game improves. AO was good when M Zverev took it to Murray. Wish there was more of it.

this year was pretty special for everyone... we saw some up and comers try and chip away at the big 2..probably due to the absence of the other half of the big 4. they fell short in the slams. the two largest fan camps saw their guys split the trophies after a period where so many said they were through. the slam race is back in full swing again with the gap remaining the same. the sad part for me is how there wasn't many epic and memorable matches along the way

I hope that you get my point. Crying at loud at internet forum will not help game to change.
You still can enjoy competition and great tennis, Misha Zverev is playing Mezt SF against Goyowzcyk

ps only time when you're not seen to complain was AO and Wimb 2017;)

It was definitely a better year than the last 2, no matter what happens from here on out.

And then there's stretch between first and last year-end #1 ranking.

Federer: 5 -- 2004-2009
Sampras: 5 -- 1993-1998
Nadal: 5 -- 2008-2013

Nadal gets to 9 by finishing #1 in 2017. Federer would get to 13 by finishing #1 in 2017.

Another interesting stat/record is number of years holding the #1 ranking at some point during the year:

Federer: 8 -- 2004-2010; 2012
Sampras: 8 -- 1993-2000
Connors: 8 -- 1974-1979; 1982-1983
Nadal: 7 -- 2008-2011; 2013-2014; 2017
Lendl: 7 -- 1983-1989

If Nadal finishes the year at #1, he'll obviously also tie Federer and Sampras at 8 years because he'll be #1 to start 2018. If Federer gets to #1 this year and/or next year, he could get to 9 or 10 years.

I think Federer should be able to take another #1 ranking. Impressive accomplishment for Nadal though.
He could get to YE #1 this year, but it's a tall order. If he wants to do it next year, he will need to play the clay season. There is no other way, as Fed's window of opportunity is swiftly closing.

Nadal slaying all these combos this year :)

Djo has the record for number of times you can make wide-eyes.
Murray !@#$ doesn't !@#$ need a !@#$ing record, you !@#$ing !@#$s!
