Connors's special events

About a year ago I discovered through an american newspaper (when I had more access… “damn”) that Connors and Nastase faced 3 times in North America in April (it was called “Challenge .....” I don’t remember well).
For 5 or six days the newspaper was legible and reported some passages on two of the three matches (those that took place in Detroit and Toronto) then referred to a third match that would take place in Ottawa, but the two days immediately after the date of the match the newspaper was not readable… “double damn”.

Not finding the news anywhere else, I came across the site on the community of Ottawa facebook and a man reported a dozen lines referring to the match he saw many years ago in Ottawa with a photo of Jimbo as he enters the court with a shirt from a hockey or baseball team.
I tried to see to contact the man because he didn’t report the result of the match, but I tragically discovered that the man died in an incident.

A match Connors - Nastase with Ilie in a descending parable has no value, but historically it has made me happy.
Maybe you have read something like this:
"Tennis fans in Ottawa are taking their time in showing interest in the challenge match between Gruntin' Jimmy Connors and Ilie (Bad Boy) Nastase at the Civic Centre Thursday night. However, the one night stands for Connors, Nastase, Blackwood and Jordan actually commence tonight at Detroit's Cobo Hall where ticket sales were reported yesterday to be lagging behind Ottawa. The Canadian schedule for the four players begins tomorrow night at Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens where tickets are selling very, very well."

The organisers called these 3 matches "The Challenge sets":
"The three one-night stands are all part of "Challenge Sets", an entertainment package devised by Concert Productions International."

.

You can say that again. Man, that's a lot of exhibitions to play. I used to follow his results as best as I could through tv/radio/newspapers. Back then I only my local newspapers and they didn't always give results, especially exhibitions. I didn't remember many of these. Things like Chicago and Toronto were reported and on tv. They were special events played every year for a good 5 or 6 years, I believe.

Thanks for the summary, KG. In the 1970s, 1974-1976 i think, Connors had additional (one set) matches at World Team Tennis. I have never read exact stats about this city series. Maybe some posters know more..
In the original WTT series from 1974-1978, Connors played for part of the initial season with Baltimore.

His record was 15-3 in men's singles sets; 105-63 in cumulative games.

The league resumed in 1981 and he played several seasons:
1991 and 1992 with Los Angeles
1993 and 1994 with Phoenix
1998 with Kansas City
2001 and 2011 with Philadelphia

Yes
Original WTT format - six sets - two men's singles / two women's singles / two mixed doubles
Revised WTT format - five sets - one men's singles / one women's singles / one men's doubles / one women's doubles / one mixed doubles

Man, learn something new every day. I never even knew about that original format for WTT. Or if I ever knew, I forgot. I only remember the one set format. One set in each category. By the time BJK played for the New York Sets, they used to televise some of their matches locally. I distinctly remember watching them. Fred Stolle was the coach.

Cape Town and LA. are 2 my errors (Cape Town is 1983 v Curren and LA 1984 v McEnroe)
THE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE 30 april 1984
Dear Boss: When you read this, I know exactly what you're going to say. Oh, no, not another one of those in-depth things on the behavior patterns of John McEnroe, the world's greatest tennis player! What has Peck's Bad Boy done now? Berated some linesman again, has he, for calling a ball in when it was obviously out?

Not to worry, Boss. I could no more analyze the five John McEnroes than I could characterize the culinary preferences of Konstantin Chernenko. Actually I think the hostility John sometimes generates between himself and spectators may stem from the Rasputin faces he constantly makes when he's playing a tough match. I mean all 751 of them belong in a scabbard.

But you should see McEnroe play tennis! Pete Rose in sneakers if you will. He jumps on every ball as though he's going for Pouncer of the Week honors. He's got so many shots he has to keep half of them on microfilm.

When the put-away is there, he's on the ball like a panther. Often his serves are just a blur. And when he returns service, his opponent had better be ready to run a country mile to track it down.

What brought this subject up, Boss, is that the other night I went to the Fabulous Forum in Los Angeles to watch McEnroe joust with Jimmy Connors in a hoked-up, best-of-three-sets exhibition. You won't believe this, but 15,853 other people had the same idea.
Hey, I don't blame the promoters for cashing in on this one. It was like taking Gary Hart campaign buttons -- well, from Gary Hart. But the promoters were very honest about it, not only billing it as an exhibition, but announcing that both players had been paid an equal performance fee beforehand.

McEnroe won 7-5, 6-3 in under two hours, the fourth consecutive time he has beaten Connors.

I know it was always 16 draw elimination format.
In 1985 Lendl beat consecutively Oresar, Taroczy and Annacone. Jimbo beat Fleming, Davis and Mecir.
The final was scheduled for 25 Aug but due to a heavy rain it was rescheduled for 10 Oct.

The only particular that I remembered was the Sun Dome….
Then, now reading the post of Scott where he refers to the failure to match v Arias , I came up with a detail that I think interesting.
The match was organized v Jimmy Arias, but Connors (that I adore but I admit it's really a punk) openly said that Arias belonged to a lower level, so the organizers decided to meet Jimbo's need and contact Nastase, more worthy to challenge him.
Arias in 1983 was number 6 in the world, he had won to Indy and Rome and above all he had reached the US Open semifinal.

In fact I didn't know about the second match in Sanibel.

We know Jimbo's character - capricious and vociferous. Definitely Arias was the better player. Nastatse played at this time mostly exos.

Yeah, I know. But this is not a loss. Jimmy hasn't played at all due to the injury and was replaced. The replacement was usual practice in such challenge tournaments. Jimmy skipped some matches in Inglewood also but these are not counted losses.
