Saw the edit the post makes sense now ;)

What’s mind boggling is the record set by one of Nadal/Djokovic could feasibly be broken a couple more times before it’s finalized, and then easily not be breached for another 25 years or more. Historic times indeed.

Tilden held the record for 42 years the longest, but did anybody ever give him or Emerson a lot of credit for it?

It seems the record didn’t become a big deal until Sampras made it one.

I remember when Pete broke the record we were in awe thinking hmmm is anyone gonna break his record??? We have 3 guys that have passed him and they're all still active. Crazy stuff.
Exactly. It had taken 33 years for Emerson's total to be overtaken. Players of the calibre of Connors, Borg, McEnroe, Lendl hadn't bested it. I was wondering if Sampras's record would be broken in my lifetime. To think three players broke it within twenty years is remarkable.
And unprecedented.

Djokovic is through to the last eight for a record 12th consecutive year. If Nadl doesn't pass Djok with WIM and USO as the 2 remaining GSs for the year, who do you think has more chances to come on top? Let's say Djok wins RG (19). WIm is next - him or Nadl? Djok! (20) Come USO we will be at 20-20-20. And at that point I can assure you, no matter the fighting spirit of Nadl, Djok will go for the kill. If Nadl wins RG then by the time AO22 is done Djok will be sitting on 21 anyway.

The only stat the matters is combined US Opens and Wimbledons. The rest of the tour -- even those that pretend "Grand Slam" status -- is just glorified exhibition tennis.

This has been true through the entirety of tennis history, and remains true today.

As such, the only one who can rewrite history this year is Federer, and that's because it's his history to rewrite. But win or lose, unless Pete Sampras suddenly shows up and competes at those two events, he will remain comfortably the GOAT.

But to be fair, Connors, Borg, and McEnroe didn't really play the Australian Open and Connors missed the French a lot in his prime. The AO wasn't much of a major back then.

Federer is not rewriting history this year, but you are with this post!

But sir, you have seen several of these records being broken in your lifetime. You might very well see the big 3's record being overhauled too

I was jolly peeved when that ruffian Hartley took my record. Little did I foresee that chaps from overseas would be winning the blasted things 20 times.

It's the 21st century and you live your whole life trying to start fights on a tennis forum.

Go outside.Sample the real world. Before it's too late.

You are hilarious, you just don't quite realise it.

Advising people to "sample the real world" while pretending also on the Internet to be something that you are not!

:-D

We're reaching the moment of truth. Rafa is only two games away from history. But if Djokovic can beat him and go on to win the tournament for #19 who would bet against him doing 21 in '21!
