Gentlemen (the ones with complaints in the last dozen or so posts above), before this lively discussion of what you perceive as my personality flaws gets too strange, let me say a few words to you on a more serious note. I don’t recall ever conversing with any of you previously, which is why I doubt there could possibly be any problems between us of personal nature. Therefore, I would venture to guess that your displeasure is related to the way the awards process was carried out this year, or perhaps the very fact that it was carried out at all.
Believe me, I understand why you may feel irritated – after all, in the midst of the quiet season, the subforum turned into a zoo flooded with polls and all sorts of discussions, you don’t know the facilitator, the facilitator gets nominated for all sorts of categories, while you don’t nominate anyone and don’t get nominated for anything. While I made my best effort to be an impartial facilitator (I did not reject any nominations, and hardly got to make any myself), of course there is all sorts of bias in the awards process. Furthermore, there is no question that some of the bias is related to the person facilitating the process. It is only natural that those posters who had previously interacted with the facilitator on the forum feel comfortable pitching in with nominations, suggestions, etc. However, please recognise that it is hardly something the facilitator himself can control.
The question then emerges in some minds (perhaps the ones that for some reason take these awards more seriously than what the awards probably deserve – note the smiley attached to this thread) – why aren’t we having the well-known and widely respected pre-Feb2004 poster X (who has vast tennis and forum knowledge, and what not) facilitating the awards this year? That is a perfectly valid question, but it is a question for poster X to answer, not for me.
I know that I enjoyed the awards process last year when Breaker facilitated, and I know that many other forum members enjoyed it as well. While most of us had forgotten about it, a couple of months ago a very well-liked and widely respected 2004 member slice bh compliment bumped up the old memories by reminding all of us that it was about time to get the nominations rolling, should we wish to repeat the awards process this year. People then fondly talked about it for a little bit, yet months passed by and no one did anything (including all those knowledgeable pre-Feb2004 posters), until another popular guy Jo11yRoger bumped it up last week reminding us that it’s now or never for the 2007 awards. I happened to be around, and that call was enough for me (an unknown guy whose current popularity on the forum is hovering somewhere just below the level of popularity of a stray dog at a farmers market) to get the ball rolling, with repeated pleas for others to join in facilitating, (i.e., summarising nominations and launching polls). Again, no one came through, and it was up to me to carry the process forward on my own.
At present the nominations are long in the past, the polls are out, some are gone, the humourous “therapy office” is closed, and much of the discussion that had transpired around this year’s awards now only lives in the memories of those who were there to watch the show live. I know that many have enjoyed (I know I did) this little holiday event we had, and for those who still feel unhappy about it, I suggest you discuss amongst yourselves what can be done to make it more enjoyable for you next year, if indeed it is to be done again in the future.
Again, many thanks to all who participated, and happy holidays to everyone! (In other words, c'mon i'ts xmas u guys peace out lololz!@!
