Always difficult to call I don't see Stephens not making the semi-final, it doesn't look bad for Halep either, although Pavlychenko has the tools if not the brain to trouble her potentially. Bertens looks the form player in the bottom half, has she the mentality to match the all round game she has in the big arena, Kerber has a tougher draw but could come through. I will go Stephens to retain, hopefully Kuznetsova will take out Williams because if she plays her sister we know who will win. The game could do without more of that.

Do we really know? H2H is 17-12 in favor of Serena but, in their last meeting, earlier this year at IW, Venus prevailed in straight sets. Decent run for Serena at W but has not done all that well since the SF there. Venus (QF) fared much better in San Jose than Serena (1-6, 0-6 1R loss to Jo Konta). Serena lost in 1R in Cincy to Petra K. Venus lost in 2R to Simona H in Montreal.

Perhaps Serena will be in better shape next week than she has been for the past month. Who knows? But yeah, let’s hope the sisters don’t meet in 3R next week. Their meetings, much more often than not, have been uninspired — even painful to watch at times.

Bouchard qualifies for the US Open with the following scorelines:

6-1 6-2
6-0 6-3

3 years on from that disastrous locker room fall which ended up giving her a concussion, a withdrawal and millions of dollars.

Shame about Danilovic losing in Q2. Would've like to see her spunky attitude in a senior GS tournament for the very first time. But she has loads of time to do it, truth be told.

Hadn’t had a chance to really look at the draw too much but damn some real brutal 1R matches especially for the seeds:

Halep v Kanepi Kaia a QFist last year whilst Halep lost 1R ;)
Venus v Kuznetsova. Battle of the former champs
Muguruza v Zhang. Zhang just missed a seeding spot.
Sevastova v Vekic
Garcia v Konta!
Sharapova v Schnyder is more juicy than tough
Ostapenko v Petko
Kvitová v Wickmayer. Both former SFists
Sabalenka v Collins. Both having a stunning 2018
Osaka v Siegemund
Bencic v Sasnovich
And of course, Stosur v Wozniacki!!

Nice, I really enjoy Patty's GIANT backswing, her strut, and the way she seems to relish sliding on the clay. Very quick feet as well back in the day. Hope she's recovered some of those skills.

Serena lost 2R against Petra playing pretty good tennis. I would definitely favor her over Venus, she’s the one in better form right now.

JoKo loss was an aberration.

General note - there are too many brutal matchups in the 1R for my taste. Holy crap!

You could be right. Could be a tough one for Venus to survive. Kooz has had a better Summer than Venus. If V is serving well it will be a close contest. She also has more fire power but Kooz-net is the better mover. If Svetlana is serving better than Venus, she’ll likely take it in 3.

I have a feeling this one will somehow fall on Wozniacki's lap, like the AO.
And the stupid decision by Halep of going all out in Cincinnati (and failing to win) will probably come back to bite her in the arse.

The rain delays, double match days (Montreal & Cincy) and Heat took its toll on Simona in the Cincy final. Did very well to win Canada and then reach the Cincy final the following wknd. Nobody, not even Serena in her better days, has won both of these back-to-back. This was actually the 2nd year that Simona has been in both finals. She fared better this time. Halep wisely pulled out of New Haven to lick her wounds (right Achilles tendon) and rest up for tennis in NY. Tough test in 1R for her.

hoping for Maria to go deep, she doesnt have tought draw but there is this Garcia girl:rolleyes:

Serena, Venus, Garbine & Kaia Kanepi are all in Simona’s quarter of the draw. Sloane is in her half. Maria’s biggest threats up to the QF are Caro Garcia, Jelena O and Maddy Keys.

I'm going with Sloane. But really, this is a coin toss, there is no one dominant player you can bank on. Halep has been the most consistent this summer, but will that translate to a championship? Maybe, but still going with Sloane.

Some interesting first round matches

Kuzzy vs Venus- both former champs, Kuzzy finally showed some life earlier this summer winning a title for the first time in forever. Venus has been struggling. I dont think either are happy to be facing each other.

Sharapova vs Schnyder- first time playing each other in 10 years. I feel bad for Patty she got screwed it seems. Sharapova leads the H2H 7-1 however all the matches have been competitive. Maybe Patty can cause an upset...I wouldn't complain. I'm just hoping she doesnt get whitewashed.

Garcia vs Konta- Garcia got possibly one of the most dangerous unseeded players in Konta. This could be a dogfight. I could see Konta pulling an upset here.

Ostapenko vs Petkovic- 2 hot and cold up and down players. Petkovic has all the tools to take Ostapenko out...if she can just stay out of her own way.

Stosur vs Woz- both have been in poor form lately, but both have had amazing runs at this tournament. Woz is limping in and this is probably not a first round match she wants. Shes gonna need to get it together or stosur may take her out.

i can see sabalenka pulling some upsets in new york.

she is on faya and doesnt have very tough draw, kvitova in 3rd round but petra is
not well, kasatkina or osaka after, not that bad

Sabalenka will be fun to watch. No idea who she was like a month ago and now shes shot right in. Shes played a lot of tennis lately but having just won in New Haven shes gotta be confident. If Petra plays her best however I think Petra will send her packing. However Kvitova and this tournament dont always mesh...so that may give her an opening. If I were her I'd pray Kasatkina gets bounced though, I feel like that would be a bad matchup for her.
