Yeah, I say it's a disgrace. And it's not like they aren't doing anything to promote tennis there. Maybe tickets are too expensive? Or simply the Chinese don't give a s...t about tennis?

I don't know but either way I think it would make much more sense to take away this ATP 1000 from them and give it to some South American country like Argentina for example.
The problem is that these things take place during working hours and in China, especially, they don't have a lot of holiday time. In the UK it's a bit more flexible because you can always take a sicky. ;)

Oh, maybe. Anyway, however you look at it, it's a waste of space. Top players come and barely 20% of seats are occupied. I've no idea maybe they should give out tickets to school kids if they are left unsold.

In most cases, the tickets are sold but people can't come until after work. When I was in Dubai once, (I go there often, by the way) I had tickets for the men's tournament but not for the ladies' which was the week before the men's. There were all these empty seat when I was watching on TV so I went there and tried to buy tickets for the week and they said they'd sold out.

Murray and Fognini getting into it at the end, with the chair too...Murray is really hot at Fog, and Fog laughing back...not sure exactly why...maybe excess noise from Fog

tiebreak in the third

Murray served for it twice in the third

a little stare from Murray at Fog at handshake, which was quick

Murray complaining more to the chair as he leaves

Today is the first working day after a 7-day holiday in Shanghai. Attendance indeed was low. It's the same schedule/issue every year. Things get a lot better after a couple of days.

This was last year's QF. Of course Fed's match usually means a bit higher attendance which is pretty much the case everywhere in the world.

Federer is only announced by his rank when he is #1. At all other times they announce him as the 20 times GS champion. Why? Pride?
I think it makes sense. Imagine knowing little about tennis and your introduction to Federer is “ and here’s the current #3 player in the world”!

Tsitsipas against his kryptonite :D

It is not Medvedev

Yeah, will be very interesting to see how Stef handles this one. The H2H is 0-2 but what's worse last time they played Stef praised FAA too much and it looked like he might be in his head now. Now is a good moment to beat the young Canadian who hasn't been playing very well as of late but I don't hold my breath.

Andy Murray as angry as I have seen him for some time in the aftermath of his confrontation with Fabio Fognini in Shanghai. Murray: "Fabio wanted to engage with me and I probably shouldn't have. But I'm not having him talk to me like that on the court."

0-5 counting juniors and FAA a lot youngerer.

Where is Wawrinka?

"World no. 21 Stan Wawrinka will skip the penultimate Masters 1000 event of the season in Shanghai, still struggling with a knee injury. The 34-year-old has not played since the quarter-final of the US Open, skipping St. Petersburg and Tokyo and still not feeling ready to compete again. "

I tell you what the Chinese do care about and that's the products made by tournament sponsor Rolex. If they did some deal so Rolex would agree to sell one of their watches to a lucky punter, every match on every court would be packed out.

Tough loss for Murray.

Upside: he's in-form enough to come within a game of beating a top-10 player.

Downside: he's clearly not match-tough, since he let his concentration drop badly enough to give away a service game like that.

Still, good level from him, Fognini is tough.

FAA saved 3 virtual MP-s with brave hitting BP-s down 5-5 in the 2nd

Shouldn't have had a few of those virtual MPs - he got a bad call against him on Tsits's lob, which he didn't challenge. Game should have been over from 40-30 with no BPs.

Tsitsipas's challenge game is good though. He's used them up, but he's always thrown in a just-in-case challenge on close calls on big points. It's use em or lose em anyway. Now he's got none left so if he gets through the rest of the TB with no more close calls they were all timed perfectly.

True. So it's only fair that he saved them. Would have been a robbery had he got broken even though was not Stef's fault.

Tsitsi will beat Djokovic if they meet. Felix was a much tougher match up for him.
If anything it’s bad from Tsitsipas that he needed so long to figure out FAA. And matchups are undoubtedly important, but only partly of course. Djokovic is so much better than both Tsitsipas and FAA that it won’t matter if Djokovic isn’t totally out of form.

Djokovic looked very much in form in Tokyo.

Realistically speaking Nole didn’t care in last years match and loss against Tsitsi. It will be a total different match. To me Tsitsi still hasn’t made a win against Nole.

How he didn't care? It was a 3-setter so he didn't even tank. He was just mentally tired/ overwhelmed after the Wimbledon win so he didn't play his best but to say he didn't care is like saying he didn't respect his opponent which obviously isn't true.
