Classic Hsieh. Wins the first set, and then her opponent comes to senses and she doesn't know what to do.

No. This is basically because Kvitova is a great mover. Kvitova ceiling is higher than Hsieh defense and dictating rallies.
Different case with Pliskova who once get to move start to scramble.

That is 3 finals out of 5 tournaments she entered.
If Petra do well on double sunshine, she will become no. 1 I think.

Double Sunshine points to defend:

Halep has SF and R32 (455)
Osaka has W and R64 (1035)
Kvitova has R32 and R16 (185)

In the moveable feast that is no.1, it would be nice to see Kvitova at the head of the table.
Thanks for the points rundown.

Happy for Bencic! She backed up the big wins over Sabalenka and Halep with another tight win over a top 10 player.

She was a promising young player few years back when she was only 18 but she got set back big time shortly after due to injury. Wining this tournament would give her a significant confidence boost for the rest of the season. Petra on the other hand is doing fine without winning this tournament so I hope Bencic takes it.

WTA needs more young players to fight at the top to keep things interesting. Bencic is one of the legitimate young players that can challenge every day the established, older and more mature players. I hope she succeeds.

Yes Bencic looks a top 10 player, I don't expect her to win tomorrow but you never know.

I think Bencic has a good chance (50-50) tomorrow if she plays as well as she can at this stage. Yes, I know Petra is in good form, but it's not like she is unbeatable or anything like that. Every match is different so no clear cut. We'll see what happens... but regardless the result, Bencic is one of the players to watch this season if she stays healthy and focused.

I can’t even see a person in that clip. You hear a couple cheering from I guess the other side.

I agree, I like Petra as well and she is a force to be reckoned with on the courts. Naomi proved in AO that this evenpowerhouse can actually be beaten. Either way it’s going to be a great match. (y)

How do they make money? I've seen local tennis matches with more spectators. Hell, I've played matches with more people watching.

Would you watch female players from below the top 100 playing that late on Friday evening, almost at midnight? I dunno.

I guess if you put it like that....
But there are many tournaments featuring former major winners that barely have a soul watching at a more civilised hour.

I suppose the interest depends on the everyday culture, popularity of sport in the country, scheduling and tournament management too. Why do some tournaments exist ist beyond me. But again, even if I'd be a biggest fan of WTA ever I would'n go see that Dutch girl playing someone named Kozlova at 11 pm.

I always take notice when I watch on tv how many empty seats there seem to be when WTA matches are played in other countries. I went to the Moscow River Cup last year (great seats at a super cheap price btw) and there were plenty of seats available and it was a midday match. In some parts of the world women's tennis is not very important. I think here in the USA it's more popular and the seat prices reflect it.

Women’s tennis isn’t popular in the USA. Indian Wells & Miami are top tier, that’s not the argument. Ask New Haven. Ask Stanford. Ask the Dallas tourney that only lasted two years. When Serena finally makes it official, it will be real bad.

Yup. Spot on.
And both Indian Wells and Miami are joint gender events.
I've only read of individual sports in America becoming less and less popular compared to team sports.

As an aside, some of the Asian swing tournaments are rarely over-subscibed.

It's not a good look.

Some women event only that has good attendance:

- Stuttgart (Germans love their Women tennis).
- Auckland (I watch Venus vs Vika and it's packed).
- Australia (It's joint even but there are a lot of people watching women's matches, I watched Hopman and there are handful of people watching purely for Angie, Garbine and of course Serena).
- Japan. This is probably because Naomi was playing last year.
- Hongkong.
- Linz/Luxembourg I forget.

I thought you are from US of A.

Tennis is dying.

But the free stream on youtube always have a lot of spectators tho.

Women's tennis, probably. But again WTA doesn't try hard to make it more popular. WTA's website is horrible and very user unfriendly. Their PR team is awful. They're too dependent of ageing stars. Only thing people from the WTA seemingly care is top-management's money. I wonder how long it will last.

This.
The WTA pushed Williams and Sharapova (and Bouchard) during the AO on Facebook.
There were lots of comments from irate Halep fans saying the (then) no.1 was being ignored.

Lol these 2 are not even relevant anymore.

Halep is a fan favorite, I don't get why they are not bending over backward to promote Halep (Radwanska also used to be fan favorite winner).
Funnily enough they posted a pic of Radwanska yesterday :)
She looked amazing.

Her legs are not long enough obviously. And she also has reduced her breasts, which is no go in a men's world.

Perhaps for shallow or juvenile males. Even w/o uber-long legs, I find Simona to be pretty hot. BTW, despite the breast reduction, isn't she still a bit more well-endowed than either Maria or Genie?

And many were barely aware of Simona prior to 2013/2014. Except for a few dramatic photos of her, many did not know who she was prior to 2009 when she had the reduction.

Bencic with the immediate break with fantastic returning.

Edit: and holds her serve at 15, thanks in part to two aces. Looking good early on.

Belinda and Petra warming up. Belinda has definitely trimmed down since the early days, looking very fit. Let's hope she stays injury free for a bit.

Belinda has done incredibly well this week. Has already taken down 3 seeds. Live rankings have her up from #45 to inside the top 30 to #28. If she wins this, she moves up another 5 or 6 spots to be inside the top #25 (pretty close to Jelena O's ranking). If Petra wins this, she moves from #3 up to #2 (and pushes Simona down to #3).

Petra off by just an inch or so with many shots. If she cleans that up she might enter unplayable mode, but for now it's deuce in her second service game.

Bencic' return game is so good today, up 4-1, getting ready to serve.

OK it was too good to be true.. Petra gets the break back at love.. :|
