If he had the mental strength of Rafa or Novak he would have 30 slams. I’m not even kidding
And Federer would only win 10 slams if he had the injuries of Nadal....
Federer is a mental giant, look at his record in 5-setters and tiebreakers.
Nadal lost from a break up in the 5th Set at 2012 and 2017 AO Finals........and lost 2015 USO after leading Fognini 2-sets-to-love, and again with Tsitsipas at 2021 AO....

He must play RG at any cost. Going to Wimbledon with 0 match practice and without tuning his ground strokes on clay would be a disaster.

I don't think he would be taking Belgrade WC though.

It’s kinda sad that a guy like De Minaur is playing better than Roger Federer. I guess that’s what happens when you don’t play for a year.

The guy needs to do two things. Either play more or just retire. This stuff with appearing in one tournament and bowing out is lame.

I think one real issue is the timeframe of ATP ranking system's return.
If 1 year system returns in August(next revise time),
it's going to take a long time for Federer to recover his ranking at the age 40.
AFAIK, WTA has returned to somewhat adjusted 1 year system.

We'll see his true level and desire for the game when the grass season and olympics arrive. If he still can't muster up a convincing performance at these events then it's time to just hang it up. He's 40 in August, he's got a ton of money and accomplishments to lean on. There's little reason left for him to grind on the tour anymore. His legs look done. The forehand, volley and serve are there. The backhand doesn't handle pace as well nowadays. We will see how badly he wants it, but being 40 is a major factor.

Should definitely play RG to get match practice... Can't just turn up on grass after ages and expect to coast through without match fitness

Very confusing end to the match. It would be easier to accept the loss if he was not playing well but he was and it looked like a sure win until he was broken back. I want to believe he will be ready for Wimbledon and I am sure he will.

We have to cut The Maestro some slack. The guy has played 3 matches in he last 23 months. That's an impossible task for anybody to come back from. How many matches did Nadal need to get out of his funk from 2015? How about Djoker from 2017-2018? They certainly needed more than 3 matches in 2 years t scrape off the rust.

The only advantage Federer is his age. Because he turns 40 in 2 1/2 months, he's had more practice.

?? Pablo is 35 by the way. The entire tour has gotten old.

Huge upset this peak Federer has lost.

Seriously, this is nothing more than a 40 yo who has barely played handful matches in the last 12 months losing to a once decent clay player. It's just unclear how well Federer will be able to play in the following matches at this point.

Besides understandable lustiness, it's actually looked like a typical match of Federer when he failed to win deciding sets.

He isn’t done but he isn’t truly back either.

Truth is probably more complicated and ugly.

He’ll need some ugly wins before the artist can emerge, even if for brief periods

The guy needs to play more but whateva. It seems like he’s putting all his focus towards the grass season. Hope the rust doesn’t come back to bite him in the fanny. You just can’t turn the switch on and off.

Totally understandable. (By the way, Pablo is 35, not too young).
Real issue is whether he can gather enough points before 1 year ATP ranking system returns.
That would be critical for Federer's decision on his retirement, I think.

Problem is unlike Nadal, he doesn't practice hard enough. That little light pitter patter he calls practice is never going to get him ready for real matches.

That is so true. Never seen him hitting real shots in practise. His practise is kind of kid's play. How this man brings serious Tennis after no real practise is beyond me. But it doesn't help when you're recovering your old fitness levels.

He withdrew already from RG lubey has to protect his clients legacy, clay is to slow for Grandpas liking

Roger’s not in great shape no matter how he looks shirtless or whatever.

Legs gave out in the third. He was winded between games. Never ever seen him in poor conditioning... unitl that Millman match at the USO.

He’ll need a lot of work to get anywhere close to sniffing week 2 at a slam
The scary thing is that it's 3 months since Doha and he still struggles this much in Bo3.

They knew wasn’t as the right level still not pretty obvious now. Will be his last year, if he came back relatively well would of continued for longer now it’s apparent he can’t go on

Watched just last few games, it seems Fed struggled a bit with Andujar's pace. Anyway good to see him hitting again, hopefully will be ready for grass so we can watch him more.

He should be in better shape than he is. He has the funds to fly guys in and play serious sets. Fly in good opponents and offer cash bonuses for taking sets off him so they go all out. With all of the time he's had to just train he should be in better shape. It absolutely sucks seeing him lose to bums. He was younger in 2017 but when he came back he was in much better form.

No last few games was an anomaly. Federer dictaded with his forehand for most of the match.

He was moving slow side to side and having to stretch for squash shots that he would have got to in the past. I don't know if he's scared to go all out in training out of fear for the knee but he's not going to do anything in this form.

He's basically a part-timer now. Playing in a tournament without seeding is one of the things he has to get used to. He will drop more and more points as he concentrates on slams and his preferred big events, and eventually, old players all get the same problem of being unseeded. It will be tougher to get through the whole tournament, but that's just the way it is.
