This is where the race stands going into Paris and how each potential permutation can form at the masters tournament:

13Aslan Karatsev28.1RUS322802290232523702460264028803280

This is how Stockholm can effect the race. I'm just adding the potential points added, as opposed to the ATP Race Points. Notice it isn't a straightforward +250 for a win, no matter what (due to tournaments being replaced with better results). Zverev, Ruud, Hurkacz, and Sinner are currently slated for byes:

13Aslan Karatsev28.1RUS322900+20+45+90+150+250
(* Because Hurkacz is expected to get a bye, he will earn nothing for losing in the 2R. If he gets bumped out of the bye, unlikely, he'd earn +20 in the 2R)

Currently, Cam Norrie is at 2875, rather than 2865...

Norrie wins easily vs Delbonis and joins the 4-for-2 gang with just 195 points separating #7 Ruud and #10 Norrie.

Karatsev is officially out and I’m not including the unrealistic scenario of FAA overcoming the current 480 point gap to #10 Norrie and 575 point gap to current #8 Sinner.

Felix is alive but he’s also not going to suddenly become a title threat, which would be necessary for him to climb over three of the four above him.

Let's take a look at the long-shots still theoretically in contention. FAA is on 2430. So he needs at least 585 points (probably more) to go past Sinner on 3015 points. So failing to reach the SF will in Paris will see him eliminated, regardless of Stockholm results or the results of the other guys. EDIT. Actually, a win in Stockholm would only add 175 points for FAA, which would replace his 2019 Lyon F points. So even a SF will not be enough, anything less than reaching his first M1000 final will see him eliminated.

Karatsev is out with his loss to Korda today.

For Schwartzman and Basilashvili on 1955 and 1920, any loss in Paris will end their mathematical chances. Busta is not down for Stockholm, and even a win in Paris alone would not be enough regardless of other results.

Brooksby is lurking in FAA's section, but maybe Murray can pull off some more 1st round heroics. If he somehow makes it past the first two rounds, he'll have his chances against Hubert or Tommy Paul. A run to the semis isn't enough for Torino, but I'll be happy if he gets there.

Pennant races have this thing called a magic number, which is s combo of wins by the leading team and losses by the chaser in an elimination scenario. Even if Diego or Nikoloz were to win Paris they would certainly be eliminated by just a few match wins along the way by the real Gang of Four.

SFs for Felix would help him stay in touch with the other NextGen guys now firmly ensconced in Elite 8 rankings. 2021 YE rankings will be the first in a long time featuring just one age 30 plus player in top 8.

Yes, I'm actually in the middle of calculating whether this is the youngest draw since the mid-2000s.

Provided I transcribed everything correctly and using each player's birthday prior to November and not total months, if Ruud and Sinner make the cut, this will be the youngest YEC since 2009.

2009 Davydenko won over JMDP, with Fed and Soderling losing in the semis. (I was there for the final, was disappointed not to get to see Roger!) Will we get another unexpected winner this year?

I haven't seen Nole play yet, but depending on the draw, maybe we can see Sinner play Med or Zed or Nole in the final.

Ruud v Bublik today. Ruud leads the h2h 2-0 and ought to win this one.

Other matches to watch today with regards to the race, as they'll determine the other contenders' R2 opponents:

Krajinovic-Opelka (Norrie)
Paul-Struff (Hurkacz)
and particularly
Herbert-Alcaraz (Sinner)

The latter is on Court Central after the FAA match against Mager currently underway.

Mager is halfway to officially eliminating Felix…proxy upset would benefit The Original Sinner.

Mager could not maintain his level from the first half of the match. Felix raised his in response.

Koepfer is next, then Hurkacz/Paul. Tough path but not impossible in weak sister Tsitsipas’ section.

FAA will have to serve well against Koepfer. Does Tsitsipas go out to Alex de Minaur or does Alex lose to the Alexei?

So Wednesday we have

Norrie v Opelka
Sinner v Alcaraz
Hurkacz v Paul

Opelka beat Norrie in Cincy 2020. The other two pairs haven't played before.

All three matches could have the potential for an upset. Sinner v Alcaraz is obviously the tastiest of these - do you think all three contenders will come through here, or will some of them fall?

Ruud is already in action versus Bublik, of course.

Why is Billie jean King cup not getting any love or mention with a thread ?? this is biggest davis cup for WTA. Men won't even have davis cup this year. at least Women is having it with different goofy name

Yazooks, I think I'd rather take Ruud over Norrie! Well, Norrie does have an M1000, at least. Come on, Hubie!

How does Sinner's loss in the second round today affect his chances to make it to the final 8? Who does it help the most of the other contenders? Or is this going to come down to the wire after next week's Stockholm Open?

Don't think Stockholm matters since that ends on 13th and 14th wtf starts so draw for Wtf would be made with Stockholm still going on

Well it's supposed to be points after the last regular ATP tournament of the season so not sure how they'll manage that if it comes down to the final in Stockholm ...

For me it's just that there are exciting men's matches I would rather watch. I was particularly disheartened to come home earlier and instead of the historic first men's tour meeting of Alcaraz-Sinner there was a women's match on that I really didn't care about... at least that's the way it is for me.

Also: how about starting a thread about the BJK cup yourself? When I find there is no thread about something I care about I start a new one.

Oh that's interesting - so this may be the tournament that matters in regards to the ATP finals?

Based on what the talking heads said:

Hurkacz passed Janny for 8th and final spot in Torino by 35 points. But I don't think even Ruud has sealed the deal yet.

Interesting. Most likely Hurkacz and Ruud will secure those last two slots.

Ruud has Giron and should surely come through, and in all likelihood that should be enough to secure his WTF place.

Hurkacz has Koepfer, who can be tricky but really Hurkacz should win that match.

Norrie has perhaps the trickiest opponent in Fritz, who has been in form recently. He needs to win this to stay in the hunt; winning will lift him past Sinner in the race.

We'll have to see if Hurkacz can win tomorrow, but the entry list is almost finalized.

You'd think Hubie will be more than a match for Duckworth. I think Hubie makes it. But don't fret. Haven't the alternates always usually had to step in even if for one match? That points. That's money. The alternate is surely going to feel ok with that. Looking like Sinner will be next one in if someone can't play their match.

Hurkacz was a set and a break down (twice) against Koepfer. There have been long stretches against Paul where he seemed very tentative, too defensive, and generally feeling the pressure. Nothing is a given in this tournament for HuHu.

Sinner can be very disappointed if he can't participate. First edition in Turin/Italy, it would have been a life-changing experience for him.
Honestly if he qualified, I'd rank him behind Medvedev/Zverev/Djokovic but higher than Berrettini, Hurkacz, Ruud, Rublev and Tsitsipas in Indoors hard courts. He was clearly the 4th favorite (IMO)

But now that looks bad for him. Unless Tsitsipas or someone else is injured and withdraws (I don't wish that at all), he will get the worst place (9) and have to wait until next year.

Is Hurkacz playing in Stockholm? If he loses to Duckworth today will he still be in the running? I prefer him to Sinner.

If he wins today, he's guaranteed a seat at he table. If he loses, he still has a very good chance.

Why don't you like the Red Headed Strangler?
