3.5 pushers, does it matter what string??

I string for friends. Some are 3.5 (grandpa pushers). Does it matter to put gut or really expensive string for novice players? Will it matter to their game much??

Thanks in advance!

If they haven't specified string I don't think it matters as long as it's not expensive.

If you stitch them up with expensive string and expect them to pay for it I think you'd lose business.

A basic synthetic gut like prince syn gut, gamma syn gut, forten sweet 16, gosen OG Sheep Micro would be more than sufficient

I think the only time it will matter is if someone has an arm problem.

If one of those grandpas complain of tennis elbow, you can recommend natural gut.

I think a comfortable multifilament strung for their game at low- to mid-tension is their best solution; Prince's Premier with Softflex does wonders with them, their games too. BTW, and FWIW to you, too--the USTA doesn't term NTRP-rated 3.5 players novices, that's intermediate-level tennis. For perspective's sake in here, the average senior club pro is but a 4.5...

well it depends if ur friends know how to tell the difference between strings yet and how they play if they dont then string with whatever u want, like im a 3.0 and i have tried out almost every kinda string there is well types like poly, syn gut, and stuff and i can tell a difference, but with with diff ppl it varies

it does matter what string and tension you use, no matter what level. If you're say, a 2.0 or a 3.5, luxilon BB Alu Rough @ 57lbs will certainly be much more different than average synthetic gut @55lbs.

Thank you for the responses. My main thoughts were either a $4.50 Prince syn gut 16 w/ duraflex or getting Bab VS gut at $35 for them. I really can see the comfort issue with gut.

They ask me for advice all the time. As friends, I string them for free, they just pay for the string. It really helps when I can get a consenus from the experts on whether the extra $30 would improve their game playability much. They don't break strings so they would get a lot of life out of gut.

If they just push the ball lightly can a gut improve their playability much or is it a waste of money?

it wont be a waste of money, as they probably won't even break it. However, natural gut does have the best power, feel and everything, including tension maintenance, so they won't have to re-string often. They will definitely feel a difference between synthetic gut and natural gut, performance wise.

What this type of player requires is increased comfort and added power. That rules out PSGD.

What many of them won't want to do, since their interest tends to be casual, is spend the $35 for natural gut. You can get Prince's very solid Premier with Softflex for $10.50; Prince's Synthetic Gut Multifilament for $7.50 (although there's increased tension loss, then). That's what I would be selling them; tell them so, then, as well.

For a 3.5 pusher, I'd say if you gave them Natural gut or some cheapo $1.50/set tournament nylon, it probably would not affect their game. Although I think they would suffer if they used poly, since they wouldn't be able to generate as much power with the racquet.

I know some highly skilled pushers. They don't push out of ineptitude -- this is their carefully conceived and executed game plan. For these guys, string definitely makes a difference.

Any synthetic gut will be fine:

Gosen OG Sheep Micro, Wilson Extreme, Prince Syn Gut Original and Forten Sweet.
