40 & Over Format Survey

In Middle States there is no match winner. It's just the accumulation of points over the course of the season.

True, but there is always a team that got more points than the other in each individual match (if they're using 5-5-4-3 or 1-2-1-1), so you could in theory use that to get a match winner if you need one (like in a playoff).

Which is what the current tie-breaker for 2-2 ties does in the end, it awards the win to the team that won court 1 doubles, effectively giving it 2 points while the other courts are all 1 point. Of course, as currently written, it only does this if they are tied on sets lost and games lost. So in essence you are saying to just make the first tie-breaker whoever won 1D (or 1S if you wanted to give it more points).

It does seem like that would be the natural way to do it for a system like NORCAL - if they are using PPP with 1-2-1-1 to determine standings, then for consistency why not just use that to determine an individual match winner for elimination playoffs as well. Yes that's equivalent to 1D winner as the first tie-breaker.

However a similar approach would not work well for PPP 5-5-4-3 leagues, as I argued above (the 3D line becomes irrelevant in an elimination match).

And if the PPP by line allows for ties on points then you are still stuck with needing some other tiebreaker.

I just learned that my district will be moving to a new 40+ league format this summer: 1 singles and 4 doubles (option A on the survey discussed in this thread).

It looks like the National format is still stuck on 1S, 3D - so our district champion teams will have to switch to that format at Sectionals. We previously had followed the National format every year except 2020 - I wonder if results of this survey in our area made our local coordinators change their mind about this...

Anyone else seeing changes to the 40+ format this year in your area?

Not in my section. But sections/districts have always had the choice of the format to use for local leagues. This just sounds like yours got fed up with the National format so elected to change it this year.

The guidance we received is 1 & 4 all the way through nationals. They did not say 1 & 3 at nationals. Does anyone know the scoop?

Well now it appears that we will actually be playing 1 singles and 3 doubles format again this year. Apparently the announced local change to 1S, 4D was met with protest from players and facilities, and the league coordinators relented.

The mythical beings who love this 4-court format with maddening 2-2 ties are apparently roaming around out there and exerting their influence. Are any of you on this forum?

I have heard that 1/4 will be the National format either next year or 2025. But locally, many will stay at 1/3 due to court space issues.
I suspect in my area the resistance to going 1/4 this year due to team size issues, i.e. difficulty finding 9 players to show up to every match. We run 40+ league in the summer and teams have difficulty avoiding defaults with vacation trips, etc. If we do go to 1/4 in the next couple of years, hopefully the captains will have enough time to plan ahead for larger team rosters.

I can't imagine why court space would be a big issue here. They had enough courts to run 18+ season with five lines and many more teams than 40+, and the leagues don't overlap.

Nothing more satisfying than a 2-2 win.
