Well he just said that pete was the best of his time but fed is a class above him. nothing wrong about that I guess.

the only thing about agassi that I note is that he often talks himself and his era down. he always says that the guys today are so much better than himself. maybe a subtle way to belittle petes wins?

he said and I pararaphrase, "in my head i'm thinking 'all this guy has is a big serve.' and then the set is over and i'm thinking 'how the hell did he win that? and he did that like a 100 times. at some point you have to concede..."

i had the EXACT thoughts. i think he's obsessed with sampras who demolished him. a few years ago, he had that infamous spat with pete during a charity event where he embarassed sampras about his tipping! he said the same in his book!
i read both his and sampras' book, and sampras was so gracious about agassi. and all agassi had to say mention about sampras was his tipping. he really is a self-involved idiot.

That was a terrific interview by Agassi. He praises all three players - Sampras, Federer and Nadal. Every words he said are all compliments.

The OP is just mad because Agassi doesn't believe Sampras is the best.

Yup, 90's clown didn't even pick up the fact that Agassi praised Nadal a lot and actually brought up the h2h against Federer as a reason why he thought Nadal was possibly better than Federer. He is just too insecure.

I think we know who is the real "EXTRMELEY bitter biased old man" here.. (looking around).

Strangely I like Sampras' game and Agassi's personality. Tennis was shoved down Agassi's throat and if anything he was bitter about not having a choice in the matter. Also losing his hair early, that did not go well.

I was reading both books too and yes, Sampras finds nice words for Agassi.
Agassis is unable to walk on the same path.
Agassi is sadly totally bitter and has no reason for it.
I know his wife a little in person. I am sure she is trying to talk often some sense into him.

well it is easier to be gracious if you come out as the winner. nadal is also super gracious to fed calling him the best all the time while fed sometimes makes a snarky comment towards nadal.

it is easy to be gracious if you dominate the other guy, against novak nadal (and fed) are not all that gracious because he beats them. I remember pete being not so gracious when rafter beat him at his home turf.

I read and I watched. He didn't say anything like that. I'm not an Agassi fan either, but this interview is fine. He said a lot of good things about Sampras actually. He just thinks that Federer has achieved more. I share his opinion.

Agassi may have gotten bitter against Sampras in the last years (once they both were retired), but during their careers it was different.

I remember more than once Agassi saying that Sampras should not be considered "just" a serve-and-volley player, given how great he was from the back of the court, that he was really the most complete player.

For example, I remember one time the commentator on court was asking Agassi about his next match against Sampras and telling him that he (Agassi) was so good against serve-and-volley players (which is true) and Agassi laughed and said something like: "Do you really think Pete is just a serve-and-volley player?. He is great from the baseline too, he is so good at everything, man...you should play him and see...".

But when they both were retired, something happened, no doubt.

I thought it was a great interview too. Agassi doesn't seem bitter to me, but quite humble. There is some serious shiz talking between him and Sampras though, in a friendly way, however; I think they have a genuinely adversarial relationship too. This incident comes to mind, at a charity event (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QSK9t6OrgU).

20-14 is 'demolished'? Never knew that. LOL! The AA-Sampras H2H is similar to the Fed-Nadal; one player got a lot more matches on his favored surface.

If someone watches the entire interview one can see that Andre has opinions and gives good reasons for those opinions. That interview actually makes me like Andre more(as a Sampras fan).

The part that is quoted in the title of this thread is Andre's mindset when he was playing Sampras before and during the match: "..he doesn't know how to play tennis, all he has is big serve. And then I'd think, how the hell did he win that set. And then he did that about a hundred times."

Agassi has evolved into a great champion, he's pretty fair in assessing Sampras and the modern era. Big respect to Agassi, eventhough I was always a Sampras guy during their rivalry. Wish Agassi would get more involved in the sport, he's missed.

I don't see anything wrong with Agassi said. But I can see how it can be misunderstood.

However, I have got the feeling Sampras would of definitely been elevated had he played the likes of Fed, Rafa, Djo and co. Clay would still be his downfall. But as soon as June hits...Advantage...Sampras.

You want to not take Agassi seriously because he wasn't nearly as serious and consistent a rival to Sampras as the current era has for its dominant players, and also because Agassi is hanging onto Roger Federer's...

I watched a ton of Pete Sampras and Agassi gore in up. Sampras was all serve. Great athlete, fast, with good hands and mental toughness but give him Agassi or couriers serve and history would be written differently.

This is such a dumb comment - what do you call Nadal? He is someone who has no serve, is a great athlete, is fast with good hands and mental toughness, what would he be if you gave him Gasquet's forehand, or Andy Murray's forehand?

You can't just switch 2 players attributes and say that if player X had player Y's backhand, they would all of sudden become Player Z, who is worse than both players.

Sampras destroyed Agassi from the base line more often than the other way around.

Agassi´s story in his book, about the valet parker who is whining to him that he got no tip from Sampras, is cheap.

The valet parker knew of course A. and S. are not the best friends.
So he got an extra nice tip from Agassi.

The Babolat Offical here was dining with Sampras. Sampras paid and tipped very good.

Nevertheless, i like Agassi as a character more after his book.
I bet he was hearing a lot from his crazy armenian boxer dad:"Why this greek boy is better than you, you loser?"

i think everything agassi said sounds reasonable except maybe when he said nadal has a case for goat. i think he has to be ranked no1 for more weeks/years then he has been to be in contention for the greatest of all time
