Anyone bummed the straight sets streak came to an end?

I know a lot of you were hoping for a repeat of Wimbledon. But I think digging deep in another 5 setter at his age is actually more impressive than if he had just swept the tournament again.

Do you guys have any strong feelings about it, or is it still just relief that it's over?

Hell yeah I’m bummed. I wanted Federer win this title in style. Yes, WB was anti-climate but it was so satisfying. Plus my heart can’t it because he could’ve lost. I was so nervous but I can’t imagine how Roger felt.

Nope, Fed has already displayed his shot-making last year in slams and masters, this time he displayed his mental toughness, also interesting to see.

Also, it makes his competition look stronger :)

Well, it is going to give him confidence in 5 setters later this year. A recent one is always one that you can reflect on

Coming back from a break down against the man who had dominated him mentally wasn't tough enough for you?

He just wanted to further mentally destroy Cilic in case he meets him again in a slam.

Crylic will be in therapy for sure after this one. Will have a nervous breakdown at just the thought of playing Fed again.

No, only because it was way more gratifying in the end winning the way he did. When you feel every single emotion. It's absolute HELL when it's actually happening but the fact he got out of it makes it better than straight sets in my opinion. Wimbledon was awesome for my nerves, but quite anti-climatic.
this a 1000 times over.
I'd take a 5 set win any day. While at the same time, I'm so tense that I'm yelling after every single point from some point in the fourth (komm jetzt! Nooo! F*ck! Yes! etc. :D)

It didn't end in straights because Fed became so nervous and started thinking ahead. If Fed could control his emotions even better than he already does he'd continue to demolish everyone for years to come.
Yeah, Fed was the first guy attempting 20, that pressure is huge. Rafa and Nole weren't chasing history, pressure and the light was always on Federer, they have no idea why going for records is so tough.

Would have been nice...but then so would 5 more slams, Olympic singles gold and another 100 weeks at number 1. Winning number 20 was the mission and it’s been accomplished very nicely thanks! :)

In one post match interview he said he'd have preferred an earlier start as then he wouldn't have spent all day thinking about winning it or losing it.

nope.
He already did that at AO 07.
No stats yet from the ATP, but quick calc:

around 61% of games, so double, 122-30=92, meaning if he served at 92% games for the major, he had to be around 30% on return games. Return games should be higher because he struggled some serving last night.

If it's close to 30%, that's a very good stat and should mean around 41% of return points. He's 40% for career on HCs.

If his serve stats are a bit lower, return stats will be even higher.

I’m just happy he won for a second there it looked like a Cilic might win.

100/106 on service games (94.34%)
29/104 on return games (27.88%)

Service games by match : 14/14,15/16,14/15,15/15,14/16,7/7,21/23
Breaks per match : 4/14, 3/16,5/15,3/15,4/15,4/7,6/22

He only struggled on serve in the 4th set vs Cilic. Only broken in that set - twice. Served at 36% in that set. So no wonder.
Got plenty of freebies otherwise on serve though.

I have him with 64 unreturned serves overall out of 139 serves (46%) - that's high. (Assuming AO site is correct and not the article, which is what it seems to me)

WOW!!! Overall serving was better than I thought. Grass-like, which makes sense given the description of the courts. Almost 28% of return games is fine and should come out to 40% of points on return. Stats are very close to career average, which is very good in a major and should be viewed a bit higher because of court speed.

I wonder how many people commenting actually looked at the match carefully. Both guys were hitting insane groundstrokes, sometimes half volleys from the baseline. It was extremely aggressive tennis.

Don't know about others but it's hard for me to analyze the match live in which I'm emotionally invested in (which is basically any Fed's slam match).

I always have to re-watch with a clear head to get a better sense of the tactics employed and the overall quality of the match.

I know right? Those two schlubs have never broken a record in their lives...

since you normally seem so calm online it is so weird to see you being kind of anxious irl, atleast that is what I remember you saying that you get more antsy irl. out of curiosity, how do you feel whenever you watch a djokerer match?

I don't think too seriously about a match until I've reviewed it.

Good job on stats.

Federer profile now says 94% of games, 28% of return games. That would be about 61% of games, which checks with my own data.

I made a chart over the weekend to project points from games.

94% of games projects 74% of points. ATP says 73%.

28% projects 41%. ATP says 40.

That means that Fed was a tad NOT clutch on points, probably because BPs saved was 2 to 3 % lower than would normally be projected.

Depends on the match whether I get nervous or not. I'm usually much calmer when Fed plays Novak or Delpo in a slam, the loss is just easier to take in most circumstances.

It's still hard for to me to concentrate on tactical play if I'm actively rooting for one player. Just not looking at the situation with an unbiased eye compared to watching a re-run of the match where I already know the score.

At this point, who cares. #20 is massive whether in straight sets or not. Only Roger knows the pressure of trying to win #18, #19, #20 and now #21. It can't be easy on the nervous system and give credit to Cilic for raising his level.

Agreed. When Roger won Wimbledon in straight sets it felt oddly weird and empty.

I would argue that this was probably the best outcome for Federer's legacy.

By playing 5 setter with clearly an attacking mindsetit was obvious that:

1) it was very competitive as both players showed that they are in good form

2) the conditions suited both

3) both players played relatively well under pressure

4) Federer still won, meeting all the expectations and exceeding them as far as the odds of him defending AO 2017 is concerned

I would have liked to see a another straight set victory. I believe that would have been a new record for the most slam tourneys without dropping a set(3).

But the main thing is that he won. I know better than to get greedy.
