ATP Tour approves six week suspension

It will be a rolling 6 week suspension in all probability.

I think that the ATP will be out for 12 weeks at a minimum.

But that does not preclude the FO going ahead, of course.

Slams depend on this income, so the situation would have to be dire.

What’s outrageous is that the ATP and tournaments have remained silent. None of this is officially confirmed. It’s very likely but not confirmed. Miami Open still is going ahead according to the website that’s still selling tickets.

What a farce.

ATP is an organization that involves millions of people one way or another. It's not an easy task to make a decision like that. An easy one is to be at home, nothing depending on you and throwing words like "farce" while complaining about things you don't know the slightest.

Is there any chance that Slams can be postponed and rescheduled if they don't happen on schedule?

I know they're planning this with other events, tennis could do a similar thing to still hold it's flagship events.

This is a very fluid and largely unprecedented situation. When I've been in charge of planning (much smaller) events, I never even liked to have to make decisions based on the weather, so I can only guess as to how hard these decisions are.

Still, I hope we will see much more coordination and clarity in the coming days.

We humans are best at recognising a crisis when there is a crisis right in front of our noses, or maybe even in them.

Fingers crossed, hands clean.

True. Prescience isn't my greatest gift, and perhaps, until very recently...but as early as January...there really didn't seem to be a need for contingency planning. (I'm talking tennis only... what's happening in the real world... at least in the US.... the lack of proactive action and the horrible reaction... is inexcusable.)

Informing all your players that the tournament is cancelled instead of just telling the top guys is a farce and if you can’t see that then that’s on you, if nobody knew then I’d say nothing but the fact you have the top players fleeing the country while the poorer lower ranked players wait for news and find out via twitter that their top players are leaving is a disgrace. Indian Wells was cancelled, its been widely reported that Miami is but still no confirmation. How long does it take? Fognini’s dad reportedly told Miami is cancelled yet Taro Daniel is waiting for information. Explain that?

Wouldn’t be surprised if the French Open gets postponed to the part of the calendar that Asia usually occupies. Feel that’s the only real alternative. Otherwise those weak tournaments post Wimbledon but may be too soon after a slam. At least Shanghai and Beijing/Tokyko are a couple weeks after the US Open.

Agree totally. If ever we needed a symbolic example of tennis players as scattered individual businesses with no one looking after the welfare of the players as a group and no safety net, then this is it.

The optics of tennis's elite clearing their own path while those not in the information chain were essentially stranded was extremely ugly. And preceeding that we had decision-making without player consultation. Not a good way to look after the talent.

This is the second high profile example in the last two months of the players council being a very poor excuse for a union. The players on the ATP and WTA need their own proper unions. The current situation of player welfare is so rife with conflicts of interest it's absurd.

Yes, I'm inclined to the position that these decisions take some time and even if people are prone to run out of patience quite quickly in a crisis then the time still should be taken.

Is there another link? You can't read the entire article.

Also, six weeks seems short.
6 weeks is short? More like too long.
Spain already said they're planning on playing all their tournaments.
So if the ATP wants to return earlier than 6 weeks then Barcelona Open will be ready to play :)

Works out perfectly for Rafa, he'll probably end up winning more titles by July 2020 than he won by July 2019, seeing as he's already won Mexico :)

Dude tennis is the last thing on everyone’s mind at moment. The health/lives of the whole population is at major risk. Unless there is a dramatic fall in the rates I doubt there will be any tennis till at least the North American hard court swing. That’s not even a sure thing. No one knows currently.

"The ATP is carefully reviewing the broad impact of this evolving situation related to FedEx ATP Rankings points, and any decisions will be announced in due course. In addition, in full collaboration with the ITF, FedEx ATP Rankings points will not be available at any ITF World Tennis Tour events during the suspension period."

" Key lawmakers share congressional perspective on the coronavirus pandemic and America's cyber-deterrence. The NBA has suspended its entire season until further notice after a player on the Utah Jazz tested positive for coronavirus. "

No tennis pros so far have tested positive as I have heard, yet its quickly moving from a pandemic to epidemic prevention in crowded events.

Cheers

You're absolutely deluded if you think that this will all be over in six weeks. Governments are now moving to the "delay" phase to try and reduce a runaway situation where their health systems are overrrun, as is the case in Italy now. They are triarging there now - having to choose who to save and who to allow to die. By delaying, the impact will be less acute but the time it takes for this to pass will be extended. There'll be no tennis for six months minimum.

If the rest of the sporting world is stopping events as a precaution makes no sense to carry on.

The tennis will resume in 6 weeks, but the crowds won't :)

"The Royal Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET) asks the clubs and organizers, that all tennis tournaments planned in the next dates be played without a public until further notice, with the aim of prioritizing health and safety of all participants."

French Tennis Federation (FFT) director general Jean-Francois Vilotte commented, "We are on a 13-hectare site which allows the flow of spectators to be organised very differently from football stadiums." Organizers said that some of the measures being considered include distribution of "gel and mask kits" and "cancellation of tickets for holders from affected areas" in order to "minimize the risk of contagion".

It just will not happen. With countries going into lock down there'll be no way for the players to freely travel the world. Organising the flow of spectators doesn't matter one bit if you herd them all into a stadium to watch a game.

It sounds like you get your news from instagram, Gary. Look at some actual facts and figures every now and then before blind emotion.
Does this look like instagram?

3-4% of reported cases worldwide have ended in death. What we don't know, because we have no testing in the US, is how many people have such light cases that they are not reporting being sick, which means we don't know how many get this in their bloodstreams and are asymptomatic.

We are working in the blind in the US because of this:

https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-testing-covid-19-tests-per-capita-chart-us-behind-2020-3

The best picture of testing is from South Korea:

3692/51 000 000=7.2392157E-5

That means that 99.9% of Korea, the best in the world so far, remains untested.

(51 000 000-3692)/51 000 000=99.99%

This is Life .. Rich and Famous people have more connections, it's simple as that.

You don't pinpoint it to the ATP or the top players, its beyond them. The easiest thing in the world is to find something to complain about. It's a difficult situation, we are not robots to react perfectly in any given moment. I have been in three threads in the past two weeks and in one you complain about the ATP and in the other you complain about how countries took the worst possible measures. What makes you so knowledgeable?! Are you a doctor or politician? Have you been in previous pandemics? Have you lived in a poor country with terrible benefits?! According to your info, you live in one the best places in the world and yet you complain like you are in a 3rd world country being a prisoner.

If you want to be helpful to people, help them not to panic. This is something you have control over - your inner circle of 20-30 people. Less panic, less stress and better immune system.

I TOTALLY AGREE! I have voted for Republicans and Democrats since 1964 and there is no doubt in my mind that Trump is the dumbest and, therefore, the most ignorant president of my lifetime. No other president comes close. Unfortunately, due to my dislike of Mrs Clinton, I foolishly voted for Trump hoping he would change his act if elected. Obviously, I was mistaken.
Too much fake news or what?

medical doctors are working tirelessly for a vaccine or a drug to reverse or control the severity. 6 weeks is good. They can assess what to do in week 5 if they need ot extend longer. Universities suspending school classroom gatherings for the entire year is extreme. I can understand until the fall, then reassess once the time arrives. They act is if there is no hope at all.

Gary, I enjoy reading your posts. This time your data is off. Annual flu IS worse (both in quantity and fatality rate). Check CDC data.
Neither are worse. Both are worse. Who knows.

It's no different than the arguments we have here over tennis. It's just a question of how the argument is framed and which type of stats you use.

NHL has just announced they’re suspending. MLB is too. I’m sure NCAA basketball will be next. Kind or surprised no golf tournaments have been cancelled.

French Open, Wimbledon, Olympics and US open are being combined into one event in Dubai in September. Deuce court will be clay and ad court will be grass on one side, and hard courts on both sides of the other.

Nadal will be the champion and will be credited with 3 Slams and one Olympics Gold medal.

Since ITF manages Grand Slams, does this mean even if they are played, there won't be no points awarded? I understand it like that.
So if RG is played and Rafa wins for example, no points.
