Backhand question

I'm a natural two handed backhand kinda guy, but I've developed a 1HBH that feels so much smoother and with more depth, spin, etc when I hit it. Should I continue using a 2HBH, or change to a 1HBH? Problem with the 2HBH is it's not as good, but is more consistent.

I'm similar to you. I think that you have to pick a style and commit to it through thick and thin. If you play at the 4.0 level or below, it may not be a huge deal to switch during a match. 4.5 and above you need consistency. Also, I'm sure it's tougher to return with a 1HB compared to a 2HB. Good luck

Why not a technique like a Roddick or Del Potro, a 2BH to drive the ball, and a 1BH to slice? I'm working on developing this now.

Depends on what style you play, or what style you want to play. If you want to be more of an all-court/aggressive player, switching to the one-hander MIGHT be beneficial, since it's more flexible with shot selection and such. However, if you play more of a counterpunching/baseline-oriented game, then you might just want to build on your two-hander.

Loose the 2HBH. All the benifits are with a one hander. You know this.

QFT! I find that Most players who have a fairly solid all court/net game, have an easier transition with the 1HBH, although it's totally possibly to be a monster net player with a two hander.

Personally, I play a one hander and I wouldn't have it any other way, but it does suit my game style of all court.

It all depends on whats more comfortable. I find the 1HBH the most consistent shot I own, because the swing path doesn't change. It's the same kinetic chain over and over again. :)

Re: comments that you should 'hit like a pro, use a 1 hbh" are funny!

8 out of the top 10 men on the ATP tour use a 2hbh.

If you currently use a 2hbh, stick with it for returns/drives. Develop a 1hbh for slices and volleys.

I've been working on the same thing this winter. I've had a 1 hander for 30 years, but I've always had a problem generating top spin, so this winter, I have been working on a topspin 2 hander to use basically just as a deep (mostly crosscourt) topspin rally shot. All of the "specialty" shots (passing shots, on the run, slice, flat DTL drives, block serve return, etc) will still be one handed. It's a work in progress, but I like it so far.

Well I've never started to try using a 1HBH until recently, and it feels REALLY good when I hit it and the motion feels a lot better than my 2HBH, but my 2HBH is more consistent.
