Baghdatis

This (kind of funny looking) Chypriot came from somewhere around 100 in the world rankings to become the Argentinian slayer at Basel, beating Acasuso and Nalbandian, on his way to the final, where he gave Chilean Gonzalez a hard time. Eventually, Gonzo saved the honor of South America... Hey, but I have a feeling we'll be hearing a lot from Baghdatis in the near future; a very fine player, indeed!

talent

bagdatis has a great setup of raw talent .. he looks comfortable all over the court !

in some ways a agassi ( like the solidly hit croisscourt backhands) and then on voleys and forehand more federer like .. also very keen sense of anticipating shots and moves very well when not tired.
fitness may still be improving but has heaps of positive attitude to spare .. look for him in 2006!!

exactly, he was the world's #1 in juniors, but was having really hard time coming up in the mens' last year. i saw him playing two challengers last year breaking many many racquets, actually he won the latter beating hrbaty in the final. very talented, top 30, maybe top 20 material.

that's a great title: "Baghdatis the Argentinian Slayer".

It sounds like something from one of those Norse sagas, and now I have an image of Bagdhatis wearing a horned helmet, and wielding a war-axe, with Nalbandian's severed head hanging from his belt, tied on by the pony-tail.

That would certainly liven up Wimbledon...

He first made his impression on me during last year's US open, when he took a tiebreak set off Federer in something like the 3rd round. He played a lot like Fed , but with a two handed backhand. Great to watch - I've been waiting for him to come through and win something so I can watch him play again. Supposedly he was injured recently?

Definitely seems like he has top 20 potential...probably higher. We'll see!

I remember seeing him at maybe the USO in 2004 against Federer or someone and he looked awesome. Since then I have kind of been waiting to hear his name again but until now I haven't seen too much of this guy.

Would suit Thomas Johansson pretty well too, since he's Scandinavian and did the dirty deed on Nalbandian this year at Wimbledon.

not to mention Stefan Edberg the Linesman Slayer, in that unfortunate incident at the Junior Boys' Final of the 1983 U.S Open.....

Come to think of it, remember when Tim Henman got disqualified from Wimbledon for thwacking a ball in anger and unfortunately hitting a ball-girl who was palely loitering nearby?

- this being the only time Tim has ever behaved like less than a perfect gentleman in his entire life, hence his slightly wimpy public image and inability to terrify opponents -

Well, if he'd actually managed to kill the ball-girl with his mis-hit, he would have then
a) been forever known as Henman the Ballgirl-Slayer,

b) increased his street credibility exponentially and

c) scared all his future opponents witless...

thus leading to a victory over Goran in the 2001 Wimbledon semi-final, and Rafter in the final.

On what fleeting chances the axis of tennis history turns.....

I am ressurecting this thread to honor those TW-ers who appear to have prophetic powers.

(Actually I *thought* I'd remembered seeing this guy's name on here a few months ago. I want to "give credit where credit is due.")

Well done, Babo_Lat, swedechris, etc...!
