Phew! Glad Federer didn't lose to a nobody this tournament. I'm satisfied with this match. He was in trouble but dug himself out and started playing a lot better. If he continues improving like this I could see him getting back to his old level eventually.
Hopefully Dimitrov wins as well.

I told ya Fed got this. Only Delpo has any chance and he will too tired to beat Fed.

I don't see Dimitrov beating Federer (yet), but some other players could make it difficult for Fed. Still, him and Delpo are y far the most likely to win the tournament, with maybe 60:40 chance for Delpo.

Can someone sum up how Federer was playing at the end? Missed the match.

Compared to the last 4 months: Exceptional

Compared to the last 4 years: Slightly below average but solid enough

Compared to his career: Poor

Fed has to win Basel to qualify for WTF. Berdych qualifies by losing 1st round? I've always been unsure the top 8 always qualify.

It's because both Stan and Gasquet lost in the 1st round, so Berdych qualifies regardless of his result here. Basically it's mathematically impossible now for Berdych to go down to 10th in the race, which is why he is qualified.

Is it the top 8 right before the WTF that qualifies (in terms of ranking)?

Fed didn't "got" anything. He was lucky to survive here! Didn't you see him go down 0-30 when he was serving for the 2nd set and down 0-40 at the start of the third set. He should be very glad Istomin couldn't capitalize on that. Federer only looked good at the end, after 1-1 in the 3rd set. Before that it was varying from below average to the worst I've seen him play. He'll be in big trouble against Dimi if he waits this long to play well.

It's top 8 based on points gained in the current calendar year, which this site keeps track of: http://live-tennis.eu/race

Since Murray withdrew, #9 will qualify this year. Qualification can happen any time when a player is guaranteed to have enough points in all scenarios.

Thanks.

According to that, Fed should only gain 200 points if he wins Basel, added from his previous year reaching the SF with 300 points. Where does the extra 200 pts come from (total of 3645 if he wins Basel, now at 3235)?

That's the ranking.

The race is the points that you get in 18 (19 if you qualify for the WTF) tournaments throughout ONE CALENDAR YEAR. In other words, every single player starts the year fresh with 0. No defending whatsoever involved, you just add your points to the total.

The only situation where you don't add all your points to the race is when you have played more than 18 tournaments. 18 consists of 4 slams, 8 mandatory 1000s, and 6 other tournaments. If a player has played more than 6 smaller tournaments, then only the best 6 count. This is the same to the rankings as well.

The ranking right now is from 22nd October 2012 - 21st October 2013, whereas the race consists of points from 1st January 2013 - 21st October 2013 as of today.

You count total points for this year for the WTF. It's not like the regular ranking except at the very end of the year. If Fed wins he gets 500 points toward WTF.
