I say the best one hander goes to either Filippo Volandri or Philip Kohlschreibber, and the 2 hander goes to Andy Murray or Rafael Nadal

David Nalbandian for two handed
although i'm pretty new here, and haven't seen much the only time a 2hbh impressed me was nalby in the madrid match against Fed. I was thinking about it when this thread started.

Never thought much of Nadal's bh, i like his fh.

1hbh - gasquet imo. i have seen Kohlsh play months back but not noticed his bh.

One-handed backhand - Gasquet for sheer power, precision and fluidity.

Two-handed backhand - Nalbandian's is the most solid. Safin's is the most powerful imo. I'll take Nalbandian's.

Regardless if it's a 1h or a 2h, Gasquet has the best bh in the ATP (Henin in the WTA, without a doubt)... It's wierd (or cruel) how Gasquet is the best at hitting the hardest shot in tennis, but is just regular at hitting fh and serves. Opponents have just learned (or is it learnt?) to avoid his bh... wierd, but true :-(

andy roddick FTW.

j/k another vote for Gasquet and i'd put the fed at 2nd b/c he has one of the most improved BH from 06 where he got killed on his consistency by nadal on the BH side.

in and of itself callieri's backhand is probably the greatest ever, his shot selection shouldn't detract from the stroke itself. He can hit it equally effectively on the run, half volleyed, up around his shoulder, inside out, 100mph to the corners, 90mph acute crosscourt angle, amazing slice approach, his backhand return is ridiculous .

in terms of mph, spin and accuracy, and even consistancy, it's in a class of it's own

likely Calleri has the current biggest one handed backhand, its just an awesome shot, and he just does not have power with that but he can create very good angles but of course his consistency is not good as he takes huge risk with that.

callieri's backhadn has no power, lol ;)

agassi had no power either, but mixed up his spins really well adn used his wheels to stay in the point adn his huge serve to bail him out of trouble ;)

Chalk up another vote for Gasquet for the sheer beauty of his flowing 1H BH and Nalby for his brilliant, absolutely lethal 2H BH.

Amongst the also-rans for the 1H BH, I'll vote for the relative unknowns --- Agustin Calleri, Andrei Pavel, Hyung-Taik Lee and Stanislav Wawrinka. Federer has an outstanding slice BH but without doubt, his BH is his weaker side and is way too erratic; sometimes pretty but rarely effective.

Amongst the also-rans for the 2H BH, Safin's is explosive, Djokovic is steady and a force to reckon but not necessarily pretty and the same holds good for Andy Murray. I really don't like Nadal's open-stance (sometimes closed-stance), seemingly off-balance and gauche-looking 2H BH... notwithstanding the fact that this is a feared, lethal groundie.

Right Now:

1 hander- Gasquet/Federer- When Gasquet's backhand is flowing it is a powerful attacking shot, capable of hitting winners from all regions of the court. However Gasquet's game is not that consitant and Federer consitantly hits a good top spin and slice backhand.

2 hander- Safin/Nalbandian- Safin has the best 2 hander when he is on one of his "good days". Safin is capable of winners and passing shots of incredible power. However Nalbandian has more recently produced good form and has a similarly decent backhand

Whole Open Era:

1 hander: Vilas/Kurten/Rosewall- Vilas could hit great passing shots and winners cross-court or down the line against any oponent and had an elegant slice backhand. Kuerten could hit similar winners to Vilas and also played good backhand lobs and drop shots. Rosewall had a remarkably consistant slice backhand that he could hit deep and almost drive.

2 hander- Agassi/Connors/Borg- Given the 2 hander has become popular relativly recently the player choices are more limmited. I would say that Agassi had the best agressive flat double hander but it was not as consitant as Connor's, who also played a great flat shot. Borg was extremely consistant with his unusual double handed tecnique where he released the 2nd hand early.

While it may not earn him many winners, Fed's slice is a great shot that is exceptionally difficult for most players to return well. his topspin bh can also be great, but it is "off" many times. Gasquet's Bh is amazing, but the windup is long, so when he gets hard shots he sometimes needs to slice, and his slice isn't the best. Davydenko, Nalbandian, all have great two handers. I'd take Safin at his best.

THe best backhand the game has ever seen is andre agassi hands down. But now, the best two hander is nalbandian i think. There is a trend, they are both armenian lol.

People talk way too much of "Federer's erratic backhand". His backhand is purely awesome. I think it's the best one hander out there, possibly the best of all.

Despite poor results, Safin probably has the best two hander in the game, possibly one of the best of all time. He kills with that shot, or used to anyway.

I have never seen seen anything like Gasquet's backhand in about 20 years of following professional tennis.

I think Federer's running backhand is actually better than his running forehand. Can hit some amazing magic half volley shots too.

Best one handed back handed return: Federer every time. His backhand slice return is so effective that it even neutralizes Roddicks serve 90% of the time.

Best one handed backhand: Gasquet or Fed. Maybe Fed is not the most consistant but when he is on I would say it is a league above Gasquet.
