I am asking what is, according to you, the best film music?

You can pick any number of movies you think showcase awesome movie music.

To me personally, the music composed by John Williams for the original Star Wars trilogy takes the cherry. The 'Imperial March' being my favourite piece of film music of all time. The link below shows my favourite rendition of it.

'Extasy of Gold' - no comment.

The song "It's a long road" for First Blood fits the narrative perfectly. Excellent overall music from a master in Jerry Goldsmith.

IL MERCENARIO
Alessandro Alessandroni makes this score from the inimitable Ennio Morricone really come to life and touches the soul. Unbelievable whistle.

'Once upon a time in the West' - no comment

'From then till now' -GHOST DOG - RZA nails it with the choice of this track. My personal favourite from Killah Priest.

The famous prelude from Beh Hur. Composed by Miklós Rózsa. Very moving, even after watching the film some 20 odd times.

OP, agree, Prelude from Benhur is a beautiful piece
Many more come to mind (in no particular order) ...

Theme from a Summer Place
Gone with the Wind (iirc it's Lara's Theme)
Moon River
Over the Rainbow (Wizard of Oz)
Singin' in the Rain (my fave)
Magnificent Seven
Dr Zhivago ??? (can't remember)
South Pacific
Titanic (yes I am a sucker for it. The Heart Goes On).

I used to love Hans Zimmer's work, but i now find him repeating himself. He has become predictable.

Lion King (Circle of Life)

2001: A Space Odyssey has excellent music, although it's mostly classical pieces of both the Strausses.

Philadelphia had some beautiful opera if i remember.

Ronaldo, I can't remember Spellbound (saw it a few months back) but I can remember Psycho. And Vertigo.

Also Morricone, I believe. Incredible picture and music! Great list.

Some of Bond´s movies had great soundtracks as well. For Your Eyes Only, Diamonds are forever,Octo*****, Live and Let Die and a few more. Not any good one since Goldeneye, though.

I know it is touchy but, when I hear " Raindrops over your head", the song theme of "Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid" I almost used to wishing to cry.Much less now, but it stuck with me for years, and once the tune came again to my mind, I just couldn´t stop singing it.Yes, girlish romanticism but.. what the hell¡¡¡

Love Story is devastating, simple but effective. So is, of course, "Midnight Cowboy", lovely and sweet.

and what about " The Graduate": maybe the greatest song ever on a movie track?

Geez, the only girlish music I could hear for hours and hours is Simon and Garfunkel, to me the best romantic music to ever come out of the States if we don´t consider the romanticism inherent to soul and blues...

For pulling together appropriate songs to support the movie I have to go with either Goodfellas or American Graffiti.

Also Morricone, I believe. Incredible picture and music! Great list.

Maurice Jarre composed for Lean's last three masterpieces...Lawrence of Arabia, Dr Zhivago and Ryan's Daughter.

His resume is way too long to list but if something was memorable over the last half-century this genius probably had a hand in it.

I think that the best Bond soundracks are:
Original Bond theme- John Barry
From Russia with love- Matt Monro
Goldfinger- Shirley Bassey
Thunderball- Tom Jones
We Have All the Time in the World- Louis Armstrong
Diamonds are forever- Shirley Bassey
Live and let die- Paul, Linda McCartney and Wings
Goldeneye- Tina Turner
Skyfall- Adele

Not that big on scores, really. The only 2 I can think of off hand that really added something to the movie for me are Taxi Driver and Once Upon A Time In America. I like a lot of movies with songs suited to the scenes: American Graffiti,Fast Times At Ridgemont High,Dazed And Confused,Goodfellas,Boogie Nights,Pulp Fiction,Forrest Gump

FYEO is a Sheena Easton song, iirc. Nice one.

Love Story has a haunting, tragic tune that sometimes gets stuck !
I can't remember Butch Cassidy;s music although i saw it a few months back.
Must check out The Graduate. I have it with me.

Forgot about Isaac Hayes' Shaft. Entire dbl album is great.
I had the Shaft In Africa album as a kid. Is that the one ?
"Are you man enough ?"
Best compilations of song clips used to advance plot and action:

Goodfellas

Almost Famous

Have to check them out. Never heard of the latter. Love Goodfellas, but can't remember the music.

No, Theme from Shaft is the Academy Award winner, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiNwGHHHuMI
Shaft in Africa is the sequel to Shaft's Big Score.

We would be remiss not to mention Vangelis in this discussion. In back-to-back years he produced two legendary soundtracks...Chariots Of Fire and Blade Runner.

True true. Was thinking about this at work earlier today. The Blade Runner music would send shivers down my spine.
