So, if you have to pock the best one handed backhand from this pool of current and ex players, who would that be?

Federer, Wawrinka, Kohlschreiber, Gasquet, Edberg, Sampras, Becker, Lendl, Haas

People have been hitting to Federer's backhand relentlessly match in and match out and he has won 16 slams so... his backhand is the best.

And Federer has been relentlessly running around his backhand and hitting inside out forehands .. so ...

:D

I am sorry. As much as I am an avid Roger Federer fan - at times a little too much - he does not have the best one handed backhand of all time. He does have a lot of versatility with it, he disguises it very well, and he is able to play aggressively with it. But over the years it has proved to be his more vulnerable side. He is prone to generate errors with it. And it is simply ineffective on clay against topspin and high bouncing shots. Against Nadal in particular has his backhand proved to let him down.

None of this is to knock down his backhand. It is beautiful to behold. But I just don't think it merits the status of best ever. I am not as versed in men's tennis as I am in women's tennis (to my detriment, I admit). As I understand it, though, Pete Sampras had a very good one handed backhand. But whether it was the best I cannot know. For women, when Justine Henin was at the height of her powers in early 2004 and all of 2007, hers was arguably the best single handed backhand ever. Graf's was also truly amazing.

Just my two cents.

I voted Edberg, but I would've gonne for Guga in a blink had he been on the poll. Most fluid motion I have ever seen. You could see he wasn't even trying, it was just natural.

Special mention for Gaston Gaudio's backhand. A thing of beauty and, to me, right up there with Guga's.

could be a liability against certain oponents but in terms of aesthetics Federer's is the most beautiful and artistic (now in terms of most effective backhand it's probably Don Budge or Kenny Rosewall of all time)

Federer's backhand is beautiful to watch. Gasquet's looks a little stff and lacking some fluidity. Just my opinion.

I voted for Edberg, because I felt that amongst all these players, Edberg was the one who used the backhand as his primary weapon..You'd argue that Gasquet is the same, but there is simply no comparision in terms of achievements.

I voted Federer. Gasquet has a gun backhand when he is on fire but i voted on the technical side of things. Federer has a better technique in my opinion.

Nobody in this post saw tennis in the 60& 70´s.That´s why Ken Rosewall is absent; I understand, now
