It's actually quite close. Both of them won a Masters title, made 2 finals at RG, both have a career win percentage of 65%, both reached a career high at 4 in the world, and both have scored notable wins over the big 3/4. Soderling does have more wins vs top 10 players while Thiem has 4 more overall titles, and more finals/semis at Masters level tourneys. Soderling also played his last match on tour at just 27 years old, while Thiem is currently 26.

It's not a even comparison. One's career was cut at his peak form and results(won 4 titles till June before retirement 6-2 6-0 vs Ferrer in a final) while other is about to have his. IMO Soderling would have had few Slams or just one like Wawrinka, he was really coming together against the big names + the big 4 during his time where all in their 20's. To Thiem credit if he goes back to 2009 he would still be a big force on clay and RG maybe even behind Nadal.

Thiem will go ahead soon if not already. Soderling was a very good player unlucky due to mono he was playing well before it. Soderling had a higher peak level at the slams so far IMO.

At this point they're quite even. Soderling was almost the same age as Thiem (26) when he was diagnosed with real mono (not "excuse-mono"!) and they have had fairly similar careers. Of course Soderling beat Nadal at RG which Thiem hasn't but the way Nadal played that day, I'd say Thiem at his best would have beaten him as well. Thiem has also beaten Federer on all surfaces, Djokovic on clay and Nadal on clay 4 times. It's a surprise that Thiem hasn't won a masters on clay but I think he will win one some day, maybe next year.

How dare you denigrate Fed´s legendary LEPER MONO. His mono was so debilitating that scientists wanted to rename it to DUO or even TRIO.

RF barely walked, and had to play slam finales held by a crane.

Federer had mono. However mono can have different forms. Some make you weaker for two months and then you are back to full strength and others are taken out for years.

Fed was clearly weakened in the AO and spring 08 but by the FO he was quite good albeit not 100% again and wimby probably 95% full strength or he couldn't have pushed nadal to 5.

Söderling was eine after it.

Federer had mono EXACTLY when he lost matches but as soon as he was back to winning slams he had no mono.

Right?

Thiem might win more titles etc., but Soderling will have the best achievement.

At the moment they are about even but if Dominic continues to develop he’ll certainly surpass Robin career achievements wise.

Of course Soderking’s upset of Nadal in 2009 was legendary and nothing will ever or in the forseeable future beat that. This probably was the biggest upset of all time.

I didn´t have the time. I was helping in the research of mono. We considered it the most debilitating disease in human history because it completely destroyed a person´s ability to win slam finales and semis.
You’re like a child. You’ll grow out of trolling one day lol.

Too close to call at this stage...
If thiem earns a RG (with or without beating Rafa), I'll put him ahead

It's "legendary" because it has been blown out of proportions by Fed devotees - they have kept celebrating it for over a decade.

Don't you know that every single tennis fan was in shock ? It's not just about fed fanbase..
The guy on BO5 clay is insane and even in his late career stretch, he's managed as much RG titles as 3 of the other winners of this era combined...
It's not about fed fans at all

I don’t know, mate. This was the first and only defeat of Rafa during his prime at Roland Garros. Is there a bigger feat in tennis than to beat Nadal at Roland Garros? Imagine, if not for Robin the Bull would have been undefeated for 10 years in this slam. Mind blowing stuff. So while I agree Roger benefited from it cause he didn’t have to beat Rafa to win RG then what Fed fans think of Söderling has nothing to do with the epicness of his win vs Nadal. I think most fans, including Rafa fans, would agree it’s one of the biggest, if not the biggest upset of all time. Cheers.
