Thought this would be interesting to share now that we are tied at 20 a piece.

Discuss.

Nobody receives anything extra for winning in a presuambly tougher draw and in the end all slams have the same value.TTW will still debate on who had it tougher and each of the posters in the debate will also be unbiased at the same time lol

I mean, no one can deny that Djokovic had it tougher,as out of Big 3 he won GS's defeating other two rivales back to back more times. Roger couldn't really inflate this, because during his peak,Djokovic struggled with breathing problems or was too young(2004/05). Toughest GS was one by Wawrinka,as he had beaten Djokovic and Nadal to win his AO, Djokovic for his RG, and defeated HM Del Potro,Nishikori and Djokovic for his only USO(Ex winners and runner up) but you can't say that Djokovic was at his best during that tournament, same can be sqid for Del Potro, so this statistics can trick you and most of times are wrong.

Is this calculated based on Elo ratings of opponents or?
Yeah, they have some special formula where they put in the (ELO measured) level of each opponent in round by round then normalize the results at 1.000, higher than 1 being tougher, lower being easier.

And not all posters will agree on what constitutes tough which is why this debate is pointless.

No, it's not clear at all that Djokovic has had it the toughest. Of course he was gonna have many wins over the other 2 since he's 6 years younger than Federer and was gonna inflate his H2H's because of this.

Federer's my favorite player, and I don't like how this metric characterizes Federer's grand slam victories, so this metric is meaningless!

You would have to say, objectively speaking, these figures are pretty damning for Roger Federer. The pattern is rock solid: Djokovic has had the most difficult slam victories, Nadal is in the middle and Roger has had things easy, relatively speaking.

It's meaningless because there's not a clear consensus on what's tough and what isn't.

And yes, it always prevents Djokodal from criticism like they've never won easy slams in their life.

See below. When dealing with any metric you need to pore through the methodogy critically and then look at alternative metrics that meet those criticisms. Otherwise it is meaningless.

Is there any reason to think these numbers are not meaningless?

What's the methodology used here? Looks like garbage.

As an aside, I'm pretty interested in analytics and more advanced stats in sports, but it's a shame there's almost nothing in tennis. Whatever exists seems to be extremely flawed. Maybe tennis is just a harder sport to dissect and capture on the stat sheet, but hopefully we'll see something better in the future.

The list is flawed but the order of who had it the hardest is correct. I don't know why that's a sensitive subject or why people get defensive about it. It really boils down to this...

Top 5 wins in their 20 Slam wins
1. Djokovic - 28
2. Nadal - 24
3. Federer - 19

Top 10 wins is one thing, but beating the top 5 is usually as hard as it gets in a Slam and Djokovic just beat those players the most.

That's your criteria, doesn't mean it's the deciding one.

Top 5 aren't always the toughest. It's not that simple.

Lol, all of Parera's tough slams were at the Rolling Garros. The only non-clay slam that was slightly difficult was 2013 USO. No way should he be above Fed when you account for clay.

That's one of the criteria, yes, and I would say one of the main ones. Or you can break it down even further.

Top 3 wins in their 20 Slam wins
1. Djokovic - 18
2. Nadal - 16
3. Federer - 8

Again, it's not that simple. Obviously Federer's numbers would be lower when the top 3 are Djokodal and he's the older player.

And you're also penalizing Federer for tough wins over non top 3 or top 5 players. Or is 2016 AO Murray now tougher than 2009 Wimb Roddick?

He won most of his Slams when Djokovic and Nadal weren't both in the top 3 though so that's not it.

I don't see how anybody can argue that Federer had it the toughest, point blank.

He had it tough until 2014. But after that it was cake walk ocassionally wawrinka was a tough one but he to declined post 2017.

Great, write why you think so.IMO Fed is out of question, as soon as some competition came up, he started loosing. So you can't say he had it tougher, because he never won slam beating Nadal and Djokovic at the same tournament. There can be discussion between Nadal and Djokovic. For Nadal strong case is he never had it easy, as soon as Fed started declining,Djokovic came in. But he lost his last final againts Fed in 2017. He was 30/31, Fed was 35/36. Not winning a set against Djokovic on hard since 2013. His only strongforce is clay and he defended it really well but competition on clay in this millennium was laughable (Fed and Nole being his best competition). On the other hand we have Djokovic. Specialised in hard courts, most people play their best tennis on that surface. Had grass court GOAT to compete againts on Wimbledon, had clay court GOAT to compete againts on RG, and on his best surface had biggest competition. As soon as Djokovic came out of story,Fed suddenly ressurected and started winning slams again. As soon as Djokovic returned,Fed stopped winning slams again. Nadal hasn't won AO since 2009, Wimbledon since 2010. I only assume that you couldn't differentiate between toughest competition and toughest slams won, as both Nadal and Federer didn't win that much after Djokovic came in in 2011.

Yes, I agree with that, but who had it tougher then him among Big 3? Murray was good player, and his style was great match against Djokovic's too
