Choking up the grip on volleys?

You hitting distance is short enough not to allow the baseline situated opponent to take a full swing at the ball.

So, you guys out yonder play with a rule that somebody has to stay at the baseline? I bet everybody has to stay on their own side of the court, too.

No, out ''YONDER", we play lots of S/V, and chip and charge tennis on the cement courts we play on.
A volleyer with a decent volley can just angle winners without resorting to power if he stands just inside his own service line. No matter how fast the baseline player is.

Vic Braden advocated for switching grips on volleys. His argument was that if you had time to turn (as you should be doing on nearly every volley), you had time to switch grips.

Although most advanced players use the single grip, I think Vic has a point. Theoretically, there should be time to switch grips.

The problem is when a ball comes at you with massive topspin and dips below the net. You can volley a chest high ball quite easily with an Eastern FH grip but not a shoestring shot.

Ahyway, I confess that I subconsciously shorten up my grip a bit and also will shift it a bit toward an eastern Fh for a FH putaway.
