yes contgrats indeed.

seeing nadal, djokovic, and murray all exit before the semis shows just how hard it is to get there and just how good fed is for getting there 20 times in a row.

On top of that...Fed just made the semis at the FO 5 years in a row...something Borg AND Nadal couldnt do.

What is really crazy is that if it weren't for Djokovic at the 08 AO he would have made the finals of every slam for 4 years in a row. It's really mind boggling when you think about it.

How about his 10 consecutive finals. Who is the 2nd place?

Jack Crawford with 7.

I think Bill Tilden also has 10, but 8 of those are at the U.S. and 2 at Wimbledon (he never played the Australian and the French wasn't an international event at that time).

Some 70 years later some John Doe guy will come out and make 20 consecutive slam finals, and then when people ask who was the 2nd place, come out a name called Roger Federer which barely anyone heard of.

sad but maybe true.

Correct me if I'm wrong but back in those days didnt the defending champion automatically get to the finals?

He could actually go on to win Wimby, US and Aus from this point too, holding all four at once :)
Think about how close he came (should he win Sunday). He would hold the French and the US, plus he went to 5 sets at Wimby and Aus.

amazing record!Hopefully 21th and 22th soon.:)

I hope you're right Malakas, and considering that Federer's best tournaments are coming up, it sure could happen.

However, Nadal just lost on his best surface, so it's a little early to start counting those chickens...

At Wimbledon, yes, but not at the U.S. National Championships. So in 1921, Tilden only played one match to win Wimbledon. I think this was the last year of the challenge round, due in large part to Tilden's own dislike of the system (despite being its beneficiary). Guess that doesn't really count, then.

Crawford set his record in 1933-34, so he had to play through the entire draw to reach his finals. He only won 3 of the seven, though.

You're right Tudwell!

Another interesting stat for those interested about these historical tidbits, not the most memorable one but very impressive I think.

With 5 consecutive semi-finals (or better) at the French Open, Federer establishes a new Open Era record, and ties for the All-Time record....Henri Cochet and René Lacoste !

Yes, incredible as it may seem, there is a LOT of great claycourters tied with 4 consecutive semis:
-Jean Borotra
-Jaroslav Drobny
-Bjorn Borg
-Mats Wilander
-Ivan Lendl
-Jim Courier
-Juan Carlos Ferrero
-Rafael Nadal

But no one reached 5 in a row since the Mousquetaires, who practically owned the place in their heyday.

I think that's a great tribute to Federer, who has become tennis's all-time Mr. Regularity with his 20 semis, but can also claim this title in what, most players agree with that, is one of the hardest tournament in the tour...
