Coric vs. Shapovalov

That's the only excuse and it's ****ing terrible. He almost cost that umpire his job, you have no idea what that umpire was instructed to say behind the scenes, as the ITF and the ATP have much more interest in hyping Shapovalov than in letting the umpire speak his mind.

It's literally the same excuse that you can apply to drunk drivers who destroy entire families.
Aren’t you being a little too harsh with the driving analogy...if you want to use one..maybe getting into a fender bender while drving 5 mph over the speed limit is more apprpriate..I think a players history before and after an incident needs to be taken into account..don’t think Shapo has done anything since to warrant this indictment on his personality..

He's the first player to hit a ball irresponsibly? Happens all the time, just he actually hurt someone. Nobody is whitewashing anything, but judging him by that his entire career is really silly imo
I'm judging the act. Not the person. Fair play to him how he's done since then. I don't begrugde him. Nevertheless I strongly disagree with how the incident was handled and how people talk about it in retrospect.

This is coming from the guy who has an avatar of Fabio, one of the most unpleasant tennis players in recent history.

Yeah, because they didn't punish Shapo by throwing him out of the game there's been a very serious rash of other players aiming shots at the umpire in the last year. Something needs to be done about this now.

Good point, o wait.

Yes, and I like Nick Kyrgios, now tell me, how many officials or people in general have been physically harmed by actions of the likes of Kyrgios and Fognini?

I'm all for more personality on court. I'm all against nearly costing an official an eye and then claiming in was 'a youthful mistake'

I think there's a big difference between forgiving it and whitewashing it. I can forgive him, but it's still one of the worst offenses by any tennis player in the 21st century.

The Shapo Whitewash. I think The Washington Post has several investigative reporters on it as we type.

Yep, sounds forgiving to me.

[Turn on Putin accent] “I do forgive you Comrade Shapo but now I must kill you for your transgression.”

Now we're getting to the juicy thrash arguments here.

Forgiving something doesn't mean you underplay the severity of the action, which is what everyone is doing.

I can sort of see what you mean here, a lot of the "well he apologized and the ump forgave him" does minimize it. But bringing it up every time he's mentioned is too far the other way.

No one (of the few posts I can actually see :)) is underplaying that it was very reckless.

(A majority that weighed in at the time wanted him suspended

https://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/index.php?threads/shapovalov-whats-fair.582783/ )

It was also an accident. He was remorseful. He’s since as far as I know been a model citizen. What do you want from the kid ? I was making light of the fact that you don’t sound like you’ve personally let it go. Let it go. You’ll feel better. :D

If you have an issue with the punishment or the actions taken subsequently (or not) to deter future cases that’s on the tour not Shapo.

What you are doing is judging someone by the severity of the outcome rather than the severity of the action. The action was wildly hitting a ball, which I've seen countless people do in rec courts all over. The outcome was accidently hitting someone near the eye which I've only seen once thankfully.

I don't think anyone is underplaying the severity of the action, it's just that 99 times out of 100, it's a harmless act of frustration. You are judging based on the 1 time it wasn't harmless.

Intent is the most crucial point in judging people. Harm with intent is not nearly as forgiveable as harm through recklessness and poor judgement. With recklessness, the important thing is to learn from it. With intent, you are dealing with a bad person who needs sanctions to curb this kind of behavior.

Shapo, with no sanctions other than his own guilty conscience, has been a model citizen on and off the court. What value would there have been in suspension or sanctions? He's learned the lesson you would want him to learn.

Is it me or is Coric basically playing the same way as Djokovic?

The follow through, they way he steps in and rotates his body on the cross court backhand on the service line (when he is inside the court and takes the ball on the rise) resembles him a lot. In general he has changed his style from attacking all balls to building points with placing the ball and caution.

If he had any kind of a forehand, he'd be really really tough. His court coverage is ridiculous. He'll probably have a very good clay season.

I'll bet his swing and twistweight are so high, that he just can't do alot more with his forehand than counter.

Yea it's insane!

I've been saying all along that Coric is a beast. He is a younger version of Djoker. His court coverage is like Djoker of 2011 and 2015, minus the forehand weapon. I am so happy for Coric.

If Zverev beats Kyrigos, Coric will likely beat Zverev (Coric is 2-0 against Zverev, 3-0 if you also count the junior I think). Zverev has a chance to beat Coric because it is best 2 of 3 sets. If it were best 3 of 5 sets, Coric will toast Zverev.

That was an unintentional act from a frustrated very young man who has realized how dangerous a stupid act can be. He and the umpire are quite friendly now. The umpire has forgive Dennis, perhaps you should too? I am just glad the umpire has recovered and is still working on the tour.

Didn't Shap also badmouth a certain English player during a changeover in a challenger match last year too? I think it was v Broady or Evans. Anybody remember? Losing it trying to find the link lol.

No you can't apply that excuse to a drunk driver. Not even close. This is closer to Edberg "killing" the umpire than it is to drunk driving.

Denis Sharapovalova is an angry, unpleasant, uncouth juvenile with his hat-wearing-backward-like-Lleyton Hewitt type attitude and, I strongly suspect, violent and even possibly homocidal tendencies.

And whats worse, he's Canadian. I know what Canadians are like, we've all seen Terence and Phillip on south park.

I had nothing against Coric. He is alright player. However after reading your tantrums about him I already hate him. Good job, you do him a great favour by your posting style.

Why?

I mean gee, have you never done something foolish in a fit of passion? Most of us in our youth have made more than a few foolish mistakes we'd like back. Do people not deserve do-overs and chances to atone?

My goodness the internet can be harsh.

Kid's never done anything remotely close to this again and has been a model citizen otherwise.

He’s lucky he didn’t get a larger ban. He could have blinded the guy.

I like the lad but your emotive arguments don’t really cut it. He should have served a 6 month ban at least.

Coric's game is very much like Djokovic. Coric is so fit that he is going to wear down just about everyone in the best of five sets.

Watching Zverev against Ferrer the other night, a lot of rally over 15 shots, I don't think Zverev won any of those rallies against Ferrer. It means that Zverev is going to be in trouble against Coric tomorrow.

If you see an Asian kid draping himself in Croatian's flag in the stand during the Coric/Zverev match tomorrow, that's my son :p

He could, he did not. He also could (and it was by far most likely result of his action) hit no one and get warning at most like hundreds of other players who did the same action. Why do you not consider this?

And even more importantly - what is your reasoning for the 6 months ban? Judging by the result, not action? Even Nalbandian or Serena who did much worse (their actions were intentional and in Nalbandian case even the result was similar) did not get even short ban, let alone 6 months.
