Why don't they feel obliged to abide by shot clock in all matches throughout the year? That is my question? Why, all of a sudden, do they feel obliged to enforce the shot clock and give time violations in the 5th set of the US Open Final - after these guys are running around for 5 hours? The crowd was noisy....and they clock should start after the crowd quiets down. No interruptions from the crowd when they play......I don't care who is playing the finals of a tournament....I don't want a chair umpire influencing the result of the match cause a player took an extra 5 or 10 seconds....please realize these guys are out there for 5 hours.....some of the points were 25+ shots.....give them some leeway and let the chips fall where they may. I don't want an umpire's call to cause a player to lose a match that is going on for 5 hours...that isn't right.
It shouldn't matter when they player commits an infraction. Nadal did it in the first game so he knew the ump was serious about it.

Atherton ...

1. The shot clock was used from the very first set, not just the 5th set.

2. Each tournament is free to use it or not use. Wimbledon did not. The US Open did.

3. If the tournament decides to use it, the umpire (as I understand it) is obliged to issue a violation if the clock runs out. Else, there would be no point in a shot clock if the umpire ignores it.

Belt ... That comment was uncalled for, bordering on racism and I'm sorry but I won't go there. I can get passionate about my favorite players but I'm not going to make comments like that about a certain demographic.

It's just a fact. If they played in Moscow then Daniil would have more fans. NYC has a lot of Spanish people. I don't understand how that's controversial.

Shot clock idealist are a joke. The only ones who really care are the fans and it was supposed to usher in the fall of Nadal. Of course, it hasn’t worked, even with the clock starting immediately and Nadal have three violations called against him, the last one being a bit if BS with the ump asking the crowd for quiet and a fee seconds layer calling time. He did okay stopping the clock a few times and managed things well aside from the last call.

But it is funny that now with the shot clock, with umps starting it almost immediately after the lat point, and with Nadal getting three violations, including one that possibly changed the match with the loss of that game, Nadal still won and the new panty bunch whining is, it is not enough because he is still winning.

Again, Medvedev had a few issues with Nadal taking time on his serve, but really was unphased with it all. Players really don’t care anywhere near fans we see it as a tool to stop Nadal, and maybe Djo.

The real reason it became an issue is advertising and broadcast schedules for networks. Time is money after all.

Loved having the shot clock there and how both Medvedev and Nadal still had an epic battle. One of the best we have seen in a while. Would have loved for it to go to a tie break for the fifth though.

I'm just glad that Nadal won this match.....and the umpire's ridiculous calls didn't influence the outcome. Thanks all and have a good night. Congrats to Nadal....the fiercest competitor...who (in my opinion) is the greatest tennis player of all time. That being said....Medvedev is the real deal and we're going to see much more of him.....he is the most impressive younger player I've seen.

Folks ... I'm not speaking up in defense of the umpire because I like the shot clock. On the contrary, I think the shot clock is a stupid idea. But the umpire doesn't decide whether to use it or not, the tournament organizers do.

I couldn't believe the crowd was booing an umpire and he was simply doing his job! o_O Has this ever happened before, during the trophy presentation ceremony?

Rafa Nadal is without question the most popular player in New York!

lol what how does that work when they were also booing nadal and rightfully so. he is not the most popular player in new york, although well loved.

Agreed but your post insinuated that Spanish fans are boorish and don't understand things. You may not have said it but that's how it came across.

they should have booed for not calling rafa for continuously delaying medvedev's serve. i'm happy for like the 3 sane rafa fans here (MN being one of them ) but tonight was horrendous display by rafa and i truly do not get how his fans dont see it or can defend it.

also its funny how people have icons of carlos ramos and were all about how right carlos ramos is and rules are rules blah blah but apparently when an an umpire tries to enforce rules to rafa, that's another story. gtfo with your hypocritical selves, you look silly.

Don't you understand? Booing a player is one thing. That happens quite regularly. This is about booing an umpire and shockingly at none other time than the trophy presentation!

And if you think they were booing the umpire in defense of Medvedev, I'm sorry but you were either not watching the match or high on something.

i didnt watch teh trophy presentation, but you legit said that rafa is the most popular player in new york which i dont believe is true. he might be teh second most popular and no not all players are booed, the fact that rafa was actually being booed, and again rightfully so, says a lot. but w/e make this more about the umpire than rafa and his horrendous gamesmanship

I don't know who you're addressing this to but I've been defending the umpire all through this thread. He did a commendable job!

But the New York crowd is so in love with Rafa, he could have stalled the match to hear Robbie Williams on his head phones with one hand tied behind his back, the umpire would have given him a violation .... and the crowd would still have booed the umpire!

I've already addressed the claim that Rafa is No. 2 behind Roger, earlier in this thread. We'll just have to agree to disagree, sorry!

That's a narrative the Federer fans want us to believe but I don't see the evidence for it. Sorry! This match was proof enough for me.

And note, I've been defending that umpire!

Good for you. I must agree it's quite a monumental feat for Rafa fans to outnumber Medvedev's at the stadium today..

He is very popular in NYC but he was booed for stalling on Medvev's serve. The NY fans even booed Federer at one point. The US Open fans are known to be protective of underdogs, they don't let champions slide with their gameship tactics easily.

Roger is more popular with the rich older audience but Rafa is more popular among younger crowds. NYC is very international and you have a lot of Spanish speakers. One of the reasons why I think he feels easily at home in this grandslam then possibly the French Open.

yeah he is popular, i'm not denying that but the idea that he is the most popular is a bit much. im glad someone booed him because what he did in that 5th set was amazing tbh, i think he stalled serve 4 times and yet we get more whining because an umpire decides to enforce rules

uh what, that makes no sense? this idea that rafa represents the other is so annoying, there were so many rich men in that audience . also there are plenty of younger fans who like roger of all kinds of backgrounds so this narrative about who likes roger vs who likes rafa is such bs.

And how is that good for me? I'm still smarting over the way the crowd treated Djokovic against Federer. I've always said, the Wimbledon and New York crowds are the worst but NY may beat Wimbledon.

except this narrative that rich older people like roger and young people like rafa is completely untrue. plenty of younger people like roger, he also has a wide variety of fans, also im so tired of this idea that rafa somehow represents the other/the working class when he has ties to royalty, wears an expensive while playing and im sorry clearly we were watching two different matches but there were plenty of rich corporate like people rooting for rafa in that final.

What?? They booed the umpire even during the trophy presentation? I stopped watching the match when it ended.

During the match, I can understand they felt it was harsh on a very important break point in the 5th set. But Nadal also accepted it and went for the second serve straight away. The umpire did his job well.

Ice ... there is no scientific data proving Federer is more popular or that Nadal is more popular. It's simply one opinion against another.

The only concrete numbers are the records and we may see a few of them tumble and change hands more than once over the next couple of years and personally, I think we're in for some exciting times. Let's look forward to that.

that is not what im talking about, im not talking about who is more popular, i am talking about this insane idea that one attracts one fanbase which is silly. i am tired of this ******** that rafa somehow represents something which is totally false.

Yes Backspin, no exaggeration there. I was shocked to see an umpire being booed during the trophy presentation. I knew Rafa was hugely popular in New York but this was something!

From where I am ... Federer fans are no different. And I can freely admit, my fellow Djokovic fans can also behave like aliens so please get off that high horse.

I am not disputing you but from my experience Roger tends to appeal to rich suburban people but yes there are a lot of rich people that also like Rafa. It all comes down to marketing as well. Rafa is humble and reflective so he appeals to rich people cause of that.

lol at the idea that rafais humble and reflective when he is friends with royalty, wears just as expensive **** as roger. this idea that rafa is a humble fisherman type needs to die. also rafa is a rich white man the way roger is. im so tired of the these dumb takes that rafa is the anti roger.

They are very similar to each other I never saw Rafa as anti-Roger. I always saw him more as the rock star whereas Roger was the "It Guy".

Perhaps they booed the umpire because the serve that won Nadal the match was hit after the shot clock had expired and should have been called a fault?

The New York crowd is head over heels for Rafa. He can pretty much do anything he likes there and the crowd will still support him.
Amazing how you've turned against Rafa after Djokovic began beating him a few years back.

Give the guy some credit, you used to love him like he was your long lost brother once, now you've thrown him under the bus !!! :D

Would an umpire call time violation on Fed if it were championship point in the 5th set of a 5 hour match and Fed winds up losing cause of that? I think there would be a tremendous uproar.
Unofortunately Fed usually serves well under the time limit, so that just cannot happen. I believe you first issue a warning and then an actual violation.

So after saying Game Set Match, he would then say Time Violation for Mr Federer. (LOL).

Herr Sentinel ... maybe so, but with No. 19 secured and millions more in the bank, he surely isn't hurting?! :)

... As in Super Bowl, World Series or Championship at US Open....I don't like when umpires, coaches, etc...influence the result of these games...let the players play and don't make questionable calls that people will revert back to as the cause for a loss. I don't care if Nadal or any other player takes 5 seconds longer for a serve - in the 5th set of US Open. I don't care for time violations at that juncture of the match......these guys are out there 5 hours and giving all they have...the chair umpire needs to stay out of it at that point unless it's an egregious violation
NUTZ! Why bother having rules and laws then? Let the players do whatever they want in the last five minutes of a match--where do you draw the line?--let anarchy take over, as it is quickly doing now anyway. NYC is quickly returning to the ****-hole it was before Giuliani saved it--the umpire booers are a prime example of it--hopefully they'll get mugged on the way home. "May you live in interesting times"--it's interesting to see civilization crumbling in real time--don't need to read the paper of record to find out about it in the morning--can take it straight to fish wrap.

I agree. The issue is that the crowd is super loud until there’s only 3-4 seconds left on the clock and Rafa has no way to know when they will quiet down so then he’s forced to quickly do his serve in the only tiny bit of time that there’s both time on the clock and the crowd is quiet. There should be an additional 10-15 seconds after the crowd quiets down or you leave no time to serve.

Fed devotees are always cheating TTW readers by generating fake stories about Rafa.

Fake stories? He continually refused to serve within the allotted time and get away with it. If you replay match point, that serve was after the shot clock expired too.

But the worst of it was refusing to return Daniil's serve. That's just poor and led to him getting two breaks in the final set.

I actually like Rafa, but his dirty tactics in that match don't reflect well upon him as a person.
